THE B&W SOUNDBAR

Only a few months ago we wrote about soundbars and their growing popularity. The perfect storm was brewing; thinner, more artistic TVs with the subsequent space constraints leading to an often terrible tinny sound. Fast forward a few months and the soundbar is finally hugely popular. One Christmas and below our most proud possession sits a soundbar. Unassuming and easy. The most popular models will boost your TVs audio, like the Yamaha YAS101. Add a subwoofer and you have movie models that include the Yamaha YAS201, or YSP models. But what about real high-fidelity sound? The best answer I have yet seen is the Panorama 2 from B&W.

Before the Panorama 2, there was the Panorama 1, and it looked very similar, the ideas were the same, and we didnt sell many. Why write about the second one? 3 reasons... The most important one is that we have stock that we now need to sell. Second, the landscape has changed. Third, the Panorama 2 has been completely reinvented. The controls have a proximity sensor which switches on when you are close. As discreet when you are watching TV or listening to music and illuminated when you need to use them. The nine drivers are completely new. You have 5 at the front and 2 at either side for surround effects. While it has a couple of bass drivers, it wont substitute for a sub, so if you can, check out the PV1.

B&W SPEAKERS

B&W were probably better known for their 30-ish thousand dollar 800 series Diamond loudspeakers. This speaker was and continues to be known by many, as the worlds best loudspeaker. But I believe B&W are undergoing a reinvention based on one idea make the worlds best and then copy, adapt and apply the technology to affordable products. If I had to name their examples of this, Id name the 685 bookshelf speaker and the CCM362 in-ceiling economy speaker. I know what most reviewers and aficionados are saying Zeppelin music docks, PV1 subwoofers or maybe even the P3 headphones, but no, I think these are innovations. Its when B&W takes an ordinary product, applies proprietary technology and makes something incredible.

When it comes to home theatre receivers, I have been accused of only talking about high end. The reason for this was because entry level receivers didnt really do anything. You couldnt connect to the internet for radio, you couldnt grab music from your phone or PC. You couldnt even plug in all your devices or use all your speakers. 3 receivers from 3 very big brands are looking to complicate this for me, by dipping right into the feature list for the first time. All 3 brands have also decided to have themselves a price war so lets sit up and pay attention:

Yamaha makes all but one of its home theatre receivers in Malaysia and no, there isnt a magical non-descript factory churning out all the brands from one place, but instead, a big white and blue box with paranoid Japanese strolling up and down the production lines interested in one thing: quality control. The RXV473 represents the minimum in terms of inputs (4 HDMIs), power (80W at 6ohm. 0.09% THD), and channels (5ch), but it does have some very cool extras like AirPlay (essential for iPhone and Spotify junkies), what Id consider the best control app in the industry and 4K for future compatibility. These features sound like excess baggage, but once you start using them, you wont look back. The Marantz NR1403 doesnt have networking, so it sort of hurts to include it among the Yamaha and Denon. Why bother going on? Think about it for a moment. App control is good for wirelessly streaming music from your phone or PC, but maybe we can get a Wintal Bluetooth adapter. App control makes zone control easy, but none of these amps support more than 5 speakers and a second zone for that matter. Is there hope? Yes. You see, Marantz and their sales people seem to be members of some audio infatuated cult. Their leader is a Japanese bloke called Ken Ishiwata. Like any cult leader, he makes generalisations and uses clichs. The good thing is that devoted Marantz workers are intent on pleasing Ken and his musical aspirations. The end result is practical, but impressive. It doesnt have mass market appeal, but installers and integrators love the brand. So, while the Marantz lacks networking, it has a lot of audio packaged into the tiniest space; discrete amplification, a real 5 x 50W at 8ohm, Pure Direct, and the Audyssey MultiEQ. For a receiver at this price bracket, I think Marantz spent their money in the right places. Am I leaving the Denon AVR1713 to last for a reason? Sound+Image said it was the best. I respect the editor, Jez Ford, as much as anyone. Hed probably say that Denon is the result of an elaborate breeding program, involving the NR1403 and the RXV473; the audio prowess and practicality of the Marantz, with the networking of the Yamaha. Great GUI overlays, compressed music restorers and nifty features like Audyssey Dynamic Volume to quieten down ad breaks. The Denon is the deserved Sound+Image winner. Having said all that, what would I get? The Yamaha. I have had 4 different Yamaha receivers. I know them backwards and have become addicted to them. Knowing it isnt as good as the Denon or Marantz isnt necessarily as important. Think of it as a temporary solution, before I get the Yamaha that I really want. PS. Sorry Jez!

Normally importers run specials because someone made a mistake or maybe because someone decided to change their connector from 30 pin to lightning either way, the stock gets sold under cost. When I checked Denons specials, I was very surprised to see a few gems. DNP720AE, A FM tuner Media Player should be popular! It has 2 interesting features the ability to do AirPlay and Internet Radio. This means that its the ideal match for receivers that are more than 1 or 2 years old or for stereo amps.

The second juicy special is a Video Processor that accepts loads of inputs and spits out an upscaled 1080p picture. At $1,999 it was reserved for high end jobs, with RS232 for control systems, IR in and out, 12 inputs, a couple of HDMI and 1 optical out. THE END OF THE ANALOGUE WORLD

As analogue TV switches off around the country, we seem to be making a fairly smooth transition to digital TV, but this is just the precursor to something far more complex... By late this year, the government will be making some serious dollars selling off TV spectrum. This is called the digital dividend. This newly vacated band of frequencies will be allocated to high speed mobile broadband using 4G or LTE technology. In turn, we might see a whole lot of interference hit our TVs. Unfortunately, we cant really gauge the impact yet, but we can take precautions. Kingray have introduced LTE filters on their new range. From an installers perspective, its great peace-of-mind and should certainly reduce the risk of call outs down the path. From our perspective, we would be far more comfortable moving these rather than models that could be obsolete in 12 months! The new codes are simple, just add one extra number ie. MHW34FS becomes a MHW35FS or a MHW24FE becomes a MHW25FE. Well also post more information on the product pages and hold a special Kingray training session on Friday 15th of March.
