The Sydney Globalist is now seeking applications to staff positions on the magazines Editorial Board for 2013. The deadline for submission of applications is Monday 17th March 2013.

What is The Sydney Globalist?


Founded in 2005, The Sydney Globalist is an undergraduate international affairs magazine published by students at The University of Sydney. The magazine aims to publish the best in student ideas, writing and analysis on international affairs. Its audience encompasses students, academics, analysts, civil society, opinion-makers and the foreign policy community. Successfully candidates will work alongside some of the brightest student minds at the University and will be credited for contributing to a respected student publication that has a readership of more than 3000.

Application Instructions
Applications should include a cover letter (maximum one page per position applied for), an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (maximum two pages), and the completed questionnaire detailed below. Please compile them into ONE document.

The cover letter must address your capacity to bear the key responsibilities and accountabilities of the positions applied for as outlined below. Previous editorial or managerial experience is desirable but not necessary. Please email all applications to applications@thesydneyglobalist.org by 17th March 2013. For the questions below, please limit your responses to 200 words per question. In assessing your response, our focus will not be on the length but on the quality of your answers. Please note, if you are applying for the Chief Copy Editor or Copy Editor positions, you are required to conduct an additional editing test to assess your skills. Executive Positions
Editor-in-Chief Commitment level: Extremely high. Time requirement is constant Responsible for coordinating the entire magazine Delegates and apportions work to appropriate members of staff Deals with all issues concerning the magazine as they arise Represents the magazine at formal functions Tracks the progress of magazine staff Deputy Editor-in-Chief Commitment level: Extremely high. Time Requirement is constant Assists the Editor-in-Chief with all responsibilities as set out above. Participates in article selection as required by the Editor-in-Chief Accountable to the Editor-in-Chief.

Executive Director Commitment level: Extremely high. Time requirement is constant Responsible for all non-editorial and administrative aspects of the magazine, including management of the mailing lists and organisation of magazine launches Utilises promotional material to actively raise awareness of the magazine Co-ordinates meetings of the Executive and Editorial Board Accountable to the Editor-in-Chief Publisher Commitment level: Extremely high. Time requirement is constant. Manages finances and settles accounts Coordinates and actively solicits sponsorship Coordinates distribution of the magazine Accountable to the Editor-in-Chief Assistant Publisher Commitment level: High. Time requirement is constant. Aids the Publisher in the performance of their duties. Accountable to the Publisher. Chief Copy Editor Commitment level: Extremely high during a two-week period of copy editing. Responsible for coordinating the copy-edit of the magazines contents involving rectifying spelling, grammar and syntax errors as per The Sydney Globalist Style Guide and their excellent command of the English language Participates in article selection as required by the Editor-in-Chief Responsible for last-minute edits before the magazine is sent for printing Distributes articles to the Copy Editors for the preliminary copy-edit Tracks the progress of all Copy Editors Maintains The Sydney Globalist Style Guide and runs all substantive amendment to the Style Guide by the Editor-in-Chief Accountable to the Editor-in-Chief Artistic Designer Commitment level: High during a two-week period of design work. Designs and lays out the magazine and its entire contents. Liaises with the Publisher to ensure that layout is appropriate for print, bearing in mind the availability of funds Develops promotional material for the magazine. Responsible for all visual elements of the magazine and its final look Previous experience with an editing program such as Adobe InDesign required. Accountable to the Editor-in-Chief. Online Director Commitment level: High. Time requirement is constant. Responsible for sourcing and coordinating online articles from local and international students for publication on The Sydney Globalist website. Responsible for the maintenance of The Sydney Globalist website, Facebook page and Twitter account and all of its contents.

Coordinates the monthly email newsletter, Global Happenings. Responsible for liaising with the Global 21 Network and its staff. Liaises between The Sydney Globalist and other online partners, including Future Challenges and Political Bouillon. Instructs the Online Editors in managing online content. Accountable to the Editor-in-Chief

Editorial Board
Associate Editors x 10 Commitment level: Moderate to high during a two-week period of primary editing. Associate Editors are responsible for conducting the primary edit of the articles that the Editor-in-Chief assigns to them. This edit is structural and substantive. The Associate Editors also: Send articles back to the authors for the approval of any changes Track the progress of authors during the editing process by maintaining a regular level of contact with them, addressing their concerns, and checking for problems Select, in consultation with other editorial staff, the material to be published in various sections Contribute generally to the magazine Accountable to the Editor-in-Chief. Copy Editors x 8 Commitment level: High during a two-week period of copy editing. Assists the Chief Copy Editor in proof-reading articles as per The Sydney Globalist Style Guide. Must have an excellent understanding of the rules of spelling, grammar and syntax. Accountable to the Chief Copy Editor Online Editors x 2 Commitment level: Moderate. Time requirement is constant. Responsible for sourcing articles for the Globalist website. Responsible for conducting the primary edit of the online articles that the Online Director assigns to them. This edit is structural and substantive. Accountable to the Online Director University Liaison x 2 Commitment level: Moderate. Time requirement is constant. Utilises promotional material to actively raise awareness of the magazine outside of the University of Sydney. Source articles from non-USYD students to be published. Accountable to the Editor-in-Chief Please note: you cannot be a student enrolled at the University of Sydney if you hold this position. Questions about your application?
