Kingdom Stories for Your Family

3. Creation of Man and Woman— Emphasis upon man’s creation in God’s image Genesis 1:26-2:25 PRE-STORY DIALOG: Our last Bible story was about God’s creation, the beautiful world: the waters, the land, the plants, the trees, the sun, the moon, the stars, the fish, the birds, the animals and man. All that God created was good. Today our story is about the creation of the first man and first woman. I want the family to think about these questions: What was the world like in which God placed them? How was the first man and first woman different than like anything else he had created? Why did God create the man and woman? This is the Bible story of the creation of first man and woman. STORY: This is the story from God’s Word. After God had made the heavens and the earth, the lands and the sea and all the other animals, God said let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let him rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth and over all the other creatures that move along the ground. So God created man in His own image. And the image of God he created him. Male and female. He created them. And this how it happened. God took some dust of the earth and he shaped into the form of a man and he breathed into the man the breath of life. And the man became a living soul. A living being. And God saw that it was not good for the man to be alone and so he put him to sleep and he opened a place in the man’s side. And from his side he took a portion and he closed that side up and from that portion he made the woman. So that when the man awoke and he saw the woman that God had made, the man said, ah, this is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. She will be called woman because she was taken from man. And God told them “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and rule over it.” And the man and woman were naked and they were not ashamed. This is the story of the creation of the first man and the first woman. POST STORY DIALOG: Let’s talk about the story. • How did God make the first man, Adam? Who breathed into the man the breath of life? • What did God see that was not good for the first man? How did God make the first woman, Eve? • How was the creation of the first man and woman different from everything else God created? Were they made like the animals? Was there something that set them apart from the animals? In whose image were they made? What does it mean that man was created in God’s image? Why do you think God created man in His own image? Don’t you find that fascinating? Not in the image of the cattle or the things that were crawling on the face of the earth, or in the sea, or in the air, but He made man in God’s image. How does that make you feel about who you are? • What plan did God have for the man and woman to be together? • What plan do you think God has for the family? • What responsibilities did God give to Adam and Eve? • How can we help take care of God’s creation?
