We are very grateful to everyone involved who helped make the conference such an outstanding success. With over 500 conference attendees this year, it was quite a crowd (and our largest yet!). We
hope everyone enjoyed the conference as much as we enjoyed putting it on. Shortly, we will have the speaker presentations and final attendee list available on the Center’s website. We will also be sending out a conference evaluation survey by email. Thank you again for making this year’s conference an overwhelming success and we look forward to seeing you at the next one in a little less than two years! ROAD FREIGHTERS OPPOSE SA CARBON TAX South Africa’s Road Freight Association (RFA) says it will lobby against the SA Government’s proposed carbon tax set for implementation on January 1, 2015. The RFA says it opposed the carbon tax, especially as the local availability of clean fuels and biofuels, producing less carbon dioxide, remained “an issue”, Engineering News reported. The formal introduction of cleaner fuels in South Africa was set to take place on July 1, 2017. RFA technical and operations manager Gavin Kelly was reported as saying the carbon tax burden would also fall on a road freight industry with low margins but which “kept the wheels of the economy turning”. INVESTOR PLAY FOR SANDALWOOD INVESTMENT SCHEME Listed investment company Hamilton Securities Limited is preparing a competing bid for the acquisition of a potentially lucrative sandalwood plantation investment scheme in managed by Elders Forestry in Western Australia. As with other companies in the agricultural investment scheme sector in Australia, Elders is under financial pressure to offload the forestry assets and has agreed a A$70 million deal on the Sandalwood Schemed, with Santanol Pty Ltd. The Financial Standard Online reported that for the deal to go through Hamilton executive director Giles Craig says that Elders requires the support of unit holders. But Hamilton, a listed investment company, is preparing a counter-bid in consultation with the current unit holders of the scheme, who believe they are at risk of recording substantial losses on their investment. GUNNS – TRADING WHILE INSOLVENT INVESTIGATION AS LIQUIDATOR APPOINTED The humiliation of the once dominant Australian timber group Gunns Ltd is just about complete with an announcement the newly appointed liquidator will investigate claims the company traded while insolvent. Creditors owed more than A$750 million have voted PPB Advisory, the administrator since late last year, be appointed liquidator. ABC News reported Daniel Bryant from PPB saying whether it is possible to determine whether there is commercial recovery for the benefit of the stakeholders from the transactions.
FORESTERS PUSH DEAL ON ‘EXTRAORDINARY’ FROST DAMAGE Forest growers in the province of Entre Rios in Argentina have been meeting with government officials in an attempt to have severe frost damage to plantations in 2012 declared an “extraordinary event”. The declaration will be imported because the forests were established under a forest promotion law in which owners are receiver government payments. MONDI GROWTH FOLLOWS EURO1.2B OVERHAUL OF ACQUISITIONS South Africa’s Mondi Group says it will continue the integration and optimisation of its latest acquisitions as the group shifted its portfolio to exposure to higher-growth products, Engineering News reported.
