2 large businesses and companies: Starbucks and Taco Bell
The coffee house company, Starbucks, has a comfy, earthy feel to their Twitter account much like the same comfy, earthy feel that their locations house. Starbucks tweets, ran out of Seattle, WA, are promotional yet also have a personal feel to them. It is clear that they try to maintain a relaxed vibe in their overall image. The company tweets promos of the day, links to blogs or Pinterest boards that are coffee-oriented. They also tweet new flavors, or ideas of flavor combinations for customers to try, and they respond to several customers with genuine comments. Plus they tweet cute things like the gem pictured to the left. So overall, I thoroughly enjoy how Starbucks runs their Twitter account. I think they remain true to their in-store image and they are professional without being too boring and dull. Taco Bell manages their tweets through mostly promotional tweets and retweets of accounts that mention them in a positive way. They also reply to some of the customers who tweet them, with tweets like “love you too” or “what did you order?” and etc. Some of their tweets were off to me, like random trending hash tags they participated in. I.e. “#ThoughtsInClass I wish Taco Bell was served in the cafeteria.” And “#PeopleAtMySchool love Taco Bell.” Maybe these are just supposed to be more promotional with a hint of humor, but to me they come across as corny and also don’t make sense, unless the person responsible for running their Twitter is in high school, which would be unprofessional and also not reliable. If I was running this Twitter account I would make it more professional and work harder on creating a better image.
2 small businesses and companies: Friends Roastery and Steel
Friends Roastery is a small coffee shop in Salem, OH. The coffee shop has recently started expanding on their social network presence. Since they are known for their small-town, local-supporting image, they remain true and dedicated to it on their Twitter account. Friends Roastery tweets links to articles about local community events, and other news posted on their Facebook account. They also post about their new coffees available and encourage people to come in for coffee. I think Friends Roastery is upholding a good online presence and I like their dedication on the growth of Salem and the community. I would like to see less links to their Facebook account and for them to be more separate on Twitter instead of just simply clicking the “share” button, they could post more of their own Tweets and pictures personally. It’s obvious Facebook is their main form of social network thus far, but I would begin taking a larger step towards networking expansion if I were in their shoes. Steel Trolley Diner is a historical small diner located in Lisbon, OH. Known by several people and even debuting on The Food Network for their famous burgers. Like Friends Roastery, the diner posts several local tweets that link to articles and information on their Facebook account. They branch out a little more by promoting local events in actual personal tweets. They tweet fun snippets for instance, on topics like “National Pie Day” and “National Pancake Day.” I think this is a cute way to show the diner has personality and subtly encouraging people to stop in for pie or pancakes on such days. Like I said about Friends Roastery, I would like to see them branch out more than just tweeting links to their Facebook account but they seem to be taking subtle strides to do so.
2 non-profit organizations: Planned Parenthood and To Write Love on Her Arms
Planned Parenthood is very active on their Twitter account daily. They remain very focused on spreading the word about their advocacy and political arm efforts. The non-profit organization has a very professional and goal-focused online presence. They retweet others who are talking about women’s health topics and they tweet links to several different articles and sites that are discussing new events and political happenings surrounding the issue of women’s health. They tweet informing things such as “six important facts on #birth control for women” and they applaud victories when they occur in states, such as, the recently failed bill that would defund family planning in Montana. Anyone searching for information on how to contribute to their efforts would easily be able to find it on their Twitter, as well as be informed on several other alike topics. I think this is professional and both informative which is a great online image for a non-profit organization. To Write Love On Her Arms, a non-profit organization dedicated to
spreading awareness and ending depression, suicide etc. is also very active on their Twitter account. TWLOHA retweets articles and events by their several supporting bands and other organizations that they work together with. They also promote events and well-known bands/singers that are part of the TWLOHA movement. So not only is this account benefiting itself, they benefit others by hosting events and entertaining people while doing so. It’s a smart combination, music and a worthy cause, and I think they keep this image very obvious on Twitter. See a tweet from their account at the right: Not only do they promote these events and share articles, they also tweet inspirational stories about people who have gone through depression issues, as well as tweeting inspirational life quotes. The fact that this organization is not on Twitter to solely promote themselves but to actually try to make the difference in other peoples lives, is very unique and I give them major props for how they run their account.
2 Celebrities: Chrissy Tiegen and Sophia Bush
Chrissy Tiegen is a Sports Illustrated model and also an avid Twitter user. Often on social media sites when you think ‘model’ you think “self-promotion” and imagine several self-promoting, photoshopped pictures to follow, with little voice of their own or any credible thoughts. I like Chrissy Tiegen because she doesn’t fit the mold of this stereotype. Chrissy, who is also engaged to R&B singer John Legend, is more concerned with posting about her favorite hobby of cooking than she is with discussing her modeling, she posts several recipes on her cooking blog. She also isn’t afraid to express her opinions about current news and politics, as well as tweet back her critics with blunt, not to mention - absolutely hilarious, comebacks. Her fiancé, John Legend, is very involved in politics and is a good friend to President Obama, so the model also tweets about her experiences at political events. Albeit, be forewarned that nearly all of her tweets will include some humor of some sort and you will most likely laugh out loud if your humor is of par. As for pictures, instead of several flawless, self-righteous pictures of herself, she isn’t afraid to post pictures of her sloppily eating a BBQ dinner she cooked and the majority of her pictures include her beloved French bulldogs. I personally think Chrissy Teigen is brilliant. Sophia Bush who plays the role of actress and activist is more dedicated to her activist image than the former when it comes to her Twitter account.
The actress posts several links to environmental benefiting causes, as well as speaks out on political topics like discrimination and inequality in today’s society. Sophia posts on everything from current news topics, to bullying of herself and fans on Twitter. She even calls her fans “little voices” and urges them to take action against bullying and other issues. She shows supports for Global Green, Invisible Children and organizations dedicated to ending violence against women. She has a Crowd Rise account where people can easily donate to the several causes she has posted. Her advocacy is extremely admirable to me and I love that she has a brain in her head that several people in the entertainment industry lack. Sophia was recently in a music video for Passion Pit’s new single “Carried Away.” The video was worthy of posting about, which she did a lot. And understandably so, but when I first began following Sophia years ago her Twitter was much more filled with causes and raising awareness. It’s obvious she hasn’t lost sight of these causes, by all of the events she attends in support of them, but it would be nice to see her get back to her outspoken ways of preaching to the Twittersphere about it.
2 Politicians: Tim Ryan and John Boehner
Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan not surprisingly dedicates his Twitter account to politics. Ryan tweets about Youngstown frequently but instead of strictly tweeting his opinions he posts links to articles in USA Today, Washington Post and etc. I like that Ryan remains local and posts about events and happenings in Youngstown, but also has a broader outlook on American politics and isn’t focused solely on the growth of Youngstown but encourages other cities in the country to progress in growth. I think his Twitter presence is maintained well and professionally, without much political reference to himself nor being controversial about his political agenda and beliefs. House Speaker John Boehner links and references his personal website for information in several tweets. To me, it would be more admirable and reliable to see him using other sites to get his point across about the issues he’s discussing. The majority of Boehner’s tweets are a reflection of the Republican Party and their agenda. They don’t include a lot of human aspect or a feel of personality, it’s more like a robot-ran account in my personal opinion.
Several recent tweets bash President Obama, which is humorous because one recent tweet blamed Obama for spending more time bashing Republican’s than working together. It’s hard to believe that he is in fact working together with the President and congress himself when the majority of his tweets are negatively aimed at Obama and The White House. I think if he took out his bias slant and had a more positive outlook on the future of politics for the country then I personally would see a better online presence, but I’m sure Republican’s don’t feel the same.
