10 Reasons for Not Legalizing Prostitution

Janice G. Raymond Coalition Against Trafficking in Women International (CATW) March 25, 2003

1. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution is a gift to pimps, traffickers and the sex industry. 2. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution and the sex industry promotes sex trafficking. 3. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution does not control the sex industry. It expands it. 4. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution increases clandestine, hidden, illegal and street prostitution. 5. Legalization of prostitution and decriminalization of the sex industry increases child prostitution. 6. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution does not protect the women in prostitution.

7. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution increases the demand for prostitution. It boosts the motivation of men to buy women for sex in a much wider and more permissible range of socially acceptable settings. 8. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution does not promote women's health. 9. Legalization/decriminalization of prostitution does not enhance women's choice. 10. Women in systems of prostitution do not want

the sex industry legalized or decriminalized.

The author of this article gave us ten reasons why she thinks we should not legalize or decriminalize prostitution. I agree with her, definitely. Her ten reasons are very legitimate in my eyes. I, as a person, as a Christian, and as a man, think that we should not legalize abortion for the mere fact that it is immoral and indecent. From the Christian point of view, prostitution desecrates the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is our body. The Almighty gave us this body for us to take care of. And by selling your body to pimps and traffickers are lewd and iniquitous. To add to my opinion about not legalizing prostitution and penalizing those offenders, I believe that prostitution degrades women. I, myself, respect women. I respect my mom, my sister, my friends, my teachers, my fellow block mates, etc. Prostitution promotes gender inequality. There will be a disparity among men and women if we are to legalize this old, immoral profession. I would not want that for I believe that gender equality is the key to the progression of one nation. If we would achieve gender equality in our country, imagine how the citizens of this nation will cooperate hand-in-hand, with peace and harmony on their side, grounded with dignity and respect, to lift the reputation of our motherland. Just imagine.
