Crime and Punishment A.

Theft 1)Punishable by death -if goods are stolen from a temple or house the thief shall be put to death -if a man has bought something from a minor or slave without permission from the elders he shall be put to death -if a man has stolen an animal such as ox, sheep, ass, pig, or a ship and cannot pay the fine he shall be put to death -if a man has convinced a slave to leave the house of their owner and leave the city or finds a slave and keeps them in their house, it can be considered theft, and that man shall be put to death -if a man has stolen a child he shall be put to death -if a highway man has been caught he shall be put to death 2)Punishable by fine -if a highway man has not been caught the man who has been robbed shall state what he has lost and the city or district governor of the robbed mans territory or district shall restore to him all he has lost -if a man has stolen an ox, sheep, ass, pig, or a ship and he is a patrician he has to pay thirtyfold but tenfold if he is a plebeian B. Home Life 1)Marriage -Punishable by death *if a mans wife is caught cheating on him with another man they shall both be strangled and thrown into the river but if a man accuses his wife of cheating but she has not been caught then she shall swear she has not and return to her house *if a man has raped and engaged virgin and has been caught the man shall be put to death *if a woman wants a divorce but has "disrespected" her husband, hasn't taken care of her house, and has gone out she shall be drowned *if a man's wife has her husband killed so she can be with another that woman shall be impaled -Punishable by consequence

*if a man wants a divorce from a wife who hasn't borne him any children he has to pay her as much money given for her bride-price and the marriage portion (dowery) which she brought from her fathers house and he may have his divorce but if there was no bride-price then he shall give her one mina of silver and one-third of a mina of silver if he is a plebeian *if a woman wants a divorce and her husband has not taken care of her and has belittled her then she shall take her marriage portion and go back to her fathers house -Standard Law *if a man's wife has convinced him to get a prenup then she shall not be responsible for debt that he has gathered before they were married and the same goes for the women *once the wife has entered the man's house then they are both responsible for the collected debt C.Human Relations -Man to man *if a man claims to cut off his son a judge must see what crime the son has committed and if he hasn't committed any crimes the father can't cut him off but if the son has committed a grave misdemeanor he gets a chance but if he commits a second crime then the father may cut off his son *if the son of a highly praised mother or father say that they are not his mother or father then his tongue shall be cut out and if he says that he hates the father or mother that brought him up then his eyes shall be torn out *if a man has struck his father his hands will be cut off *if a man has knocked out the eye of a patrician or has broken the limb of a patrician the same shall be done to him *if a man has knocked out the eye of, or broken the limb of a plebeian he shell pay one mina of silver *if a man cuts off a body part of another of the same class as himself then he shall get that same body part cut off but if he is of a lower class then the man that has caused the damage shall pay a fine *common law of an eye for an eye *if a man has hit a pregnant woman, causing her to have a miscarriage then he shall pay her ten shekels of silver, five if she is the daughter of a plebeian and if the woman dies the man's daughter shall be killed but if the woman is the daughter of a plebeian then he shall only pay half a mina of silver -Public Works

*if a surgeon operates on a man and kills or cuts off his limb the same is done to him if that man is of the same class but if the man is of a lower class than himself then he shall have consequence for example: if a surgeon has treated a plebeians slave and killed the slave then he must sacrifice one of his slaves to the man but if the slave only lost something such as an eye then the surgeon must pay half the slaves value *if a builder has built a man's house then the man shall pay him the value but if the builder didn't complete his work properly and the building falls on the owner and kills him then the builder shall be put to death, if its the owners slave that was killed then the builder must sacrifice one of his slaves *if a boatman has built a boat then the owner shall pay him the value of the boat *if the boat goes on a voyage within the first year of it making and there is damage done then the boatman has to repair the boat and make it sound from his own money *if a boat on its coarse runs into another then the owner of the sunken ship shall state what he has lost and the owner of the boat that sunk the other shall restore all that the boat owner has lost
