Background

Photojournalists often have to shoot under less than ideal circumstances. It is important to move in close and frame the image in the viewfinder, but sometimes you get caught too far away. You can compensate for this by cropping the photograph once it has been printed. Most images should be cropped closely to so viewers can see and understand what is happening. When there is too much information in the photograph, it distracts the viewer and pulls attention away from the center of interest. The way these problems are solved is through cropping. Especially with sports photos, the photographer needs to make sure that balls, arms and legs are not cropped out of the picture. It is important to note which way the action is moving in the picture and leave a bit of space for the athlete to move into. Also make sure that vertical lines in the photographic are truly vertical, otherwise the image will look like it’s crooked.

Directions

Each of these news photos could use some cropping to improve the image. There may be several possible ways to crop each image. With a pen and ruler, crop each image in at least two ways, trying to change your interpretation of the visual facts in each. 1. How many pictures were you able to create? 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of an overall shot as opposed to several cropped shots?
