NATIVE INMATE LIAISON Regular Part Time – 26 Hours Weekly April 2013

ACCOUNTABILITY: The Native Inmate Liaison Officer is accountable to the Program Supervisor. DUTIES:  To provide support, assistance, rehabilitative care as well as counseling and follow-up services  Assess needs and identify priorities of clientele be providing Liaison and advocacy services between inmates, their families, Institutional staff and other agencies  Provide assistance and support to ensure clients have a successful re-entry into the community  Provide cultural and spiritual resources that are required to deliver healing and wellness activities such as sweat lodge ceremonies, healing circles, traditional drum and pipe ceremonies  Develop and maintain a management system for the program which includes reports, intake forms, progress reports and file maintenance  Prepare and submit regular reports and statistics pertaining to programs, activities and clients.  Develop a discharge plan by providing clients with access to resources aimed at meeting their educational, employment, housing, health or other identified needs  To consult with the Ministry and Aboriginal Community in providing training on Aboriginal Culture to Institution Staff and, where feasible and appropriate, to Probation and Parole Staff.  To Coordinate/facilitate individual and group counselling  Provide translation and interpretive assistance as needed

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 1) Grade 12 with Social Work Certificates or equivalent with previous experience working in a Native Social service environment 2) Knowledge of Native culture and general lifestyle of Native People on and off reserves 3) Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Correctional Services Act and Regulations 4) Good written and oral communication skills 5) Ability to speak the Native language, preferably Ojibway or Cree, is an asset 6) Self-Motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision 7) Valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s License and the use of a reliable vehicle.
