CHAIRMAN, JEFF BARKERS INTRODUCTION.

Many things have been achieved in the last twelve months, all due to the hard work of members, staff and volunteers. To me the highlights have been the celebrations of the award of outstanding from the OFSTED inspection for the Mosses Pre-school gained at the end of the previous year, the success of the boiler replacement due to the fundraising efforts of our community members and most importantly the way in which members, groups and staff have cooperated to look to the future developments of the Centre and its further vision. Last year I referred to our difficult economic climate and our aims to operate within strict financial constraints, yet looking to continue to improve the environment and facilities for the whole of the Mosses community. In terms of our financial position, we have managed this exceptionally well and our position at the end of the financial year is better than I have ever known it. With regard to the building, we have consulted widely and taking on all your comments and suggestions, once we receive the final consultation report we will be looking for funding to improve the building and its facilities. These are demanding and exciting times! I am reminded of when visitors come to the Mosses Centre how amazed and impressed

they are at the enormous diversity of our groups and what takes place within the confines of the building. The welcoming atmosphere from both members and staff has been referred to many times. This is something we can all be proud of. During this year we have seen an increase in the number of Trustees and also from new interested people willing to be considered as Trustees. We truly are living in exciting and challenging times. Finally I wish to thank you all for your support, members, staff and volunteers, for your efforts and understanding. When we act together nothing is impossible. Jeff Barker- Chair.

SUPPORTIVE WE ARE BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER BY:

SUPPORTIVE The Mosses Community Association is a Registered Charity that exists to meet the needs of the local community and the residents of the whole of Bury Metropolitan Borough. We provide opportunities to fulfil all our members social, recreational and learning aspirations. Community courses are frequently run with the idea of bridging the gap to higher education. Members who study on these courses often undergo further education at Bury College. For information visit Bury Councils website. FRIENDLY The Mosses is a community based centre, obviously friendship is inevitable. A great example is the group Gateway, starting 30 years ago so that members could come along to meet their friends. Over a hundred people are a part of Gateway, they listen to music, dance, have a game of pool, and play air hockey, table football and dominoes.

FRIENDLY

ENJOYABLE

ENJOYABLE The Mosses Centre is a recreational home for many members. We provide a meeting place for over forty clubs and groups every week. Our members range from young budding Karate champions, right to way through to The Red Rose (60 Years Plus). We have rooms for hire including our large Main Hall with a bar and dance floor for weddings, parties, quiz nights and large gatherings. Our gym is suitable for sports and exercise classes or even for hosting

birthday parties. We also have smaller rooms for meeting or training purposes. EDUCATIONAL A large portion of the centres work revolves around educationg members. This can take place in weekly groups & activities, free courses, or pre-school. We believe all members deserve the right to education.

EDUCATIONAL

THE YEAR
The year 2011/2012 will probably be remembered for our Boiler Appeal, when many Mosses user groups surpassed themselves in raising over 5,000 in just a few months. This, and a grant from the Awards For All National Lottery fund, means that the risk of relying on a boiler that is over 35 years old has now gone. The year saw us continuing to provide a community hub for the many and varied groups and services that happen weekly in the Centre (See the lists on page 6 and 7) and providing our own projects to benefit the Community. The year also could be described as regrouping and looking to the future in terms of our staff and trustees. The staff have been expanding their roles and working as a team to give an efficient and welcoming service to our users and user groups, while the trustees having added to their number have been looking at the strategic vision to take the Mosses into the future. All involved with the Mosses are grateful to those organisations that have funded the Mosses over the year. These are listed on the following page. The picture shows the Writers Group at the Mosses. THE MOSSES COMMUNIT Y ASSOCIATION PROJECTS THE MOSSES FAMMILY SUPPORT PROJECT
INCLUDING THE MOSSES PRESCHOOL How time flies, just over a year ago we had been inspected by Ofsted and gained recognition for our dedication to providing Quality Childcare in our Mosses PreSchool. We were awarded Outstanding in all 17 areas of our work. This was an excellent start to the year with staff morale at its highest. Bury Early Years team have on many occasions, brought staff members from other similar provisions to ours, to see what can be achieved within a multipurpose room/put away provision and a limited budget. This is again recognition of the good work by The Mosses excellent dedicated staff team of professional early years practitioners. This year we can celebrate the fact that Karen completed her Foundation Degree in Early Years Practice. Although this has been extremely hard work for Karen to balance her home life with 3 children, work and study she is now doing her top up BA Honours. Sarah and Donna enrolled in September via Holy Cross College to follow in Karens footsteps and study for The Foundation Degree in Early Years Practice. Michelle having completed a taster course in Sign Language here at the Mosses, enrolled at Adult Learning for an intensive course which she will complete in a year. This will be very useful as the recommended guide lines is that it is good practice for childcare practitioners, to teach Sign Language to all children as a communication tool. This, of course, as research tells us supports children with language delay and those who have English as their second language. We continue to provide good quality childcare and serve our local community. Our children appear happy, stimulated and develop an interest in learning. We have an excellent reputation for being a really good provider of Early Years Education. Our prediction based on our waiting list, together with our parents requesting that their children remain with us next year, is that we will be full at the start of the new school year in September. STAY AND PLAY PROJECT Our continuing contract with Little Oaks Childrens Centre means that we continue to provide a weekly Stay and Play session. Local parents bring their young children to have fun and interact with other families and make new friends. We also provide a toy library so children and parents can do an activity together at home; this has proven to be very popular. Two staff are on hand to support and advise parents with related childcare issues. OUTREACH SERVICE Also in partnership with Little Oaks we have an Outreach Service where we support families in their own homes as well as in the community. The referrals for these families come from other professionals such as health visitors. Together we assess the concerns and plan a piece of work to support the family.

SUPPORTING THE MOSSES USER GROUPS AND THE CRCHE PROVISION

Our Mosses Pre-school is also funded to provide childcare places for parents attending groups at the Mosses. For example an ESOL class where parents learn English. In addition to the Mosses Pre-school we have a crche service for Mosses user groups. For example, Eagles Wing is a group based here at the Mosses who help and support asylum seekers and refugees. This group, via a Children in Need grant , commission us to provide a crche on two mornings per week. We had a moment of fame when BBC radio Manchester came to the Mosses to do a live interview about how the Children in Need money is used. As you can see the Mosses supports local and borough wide families and their children to provide good quality childcare and family support.

MOSSES COMMUNIT Y COURSE PROJECT

The project was funded by Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities (NLDC). Tony Robinson was employed as Project Co-ordinator for this project. The aim of the project was to give participants access to courses in a community setting. All the targets set by the funding body were exceeded. The courses were:.Basic English Class .Making My Computer Safe .Introduction to British Sign Language .Emergency First Aid for Children .Basic Computers for the Confused .Emergency First Aid at Work (Certificate) .Food Safety & Hygiene (CIEH Certificate) .Introduction to Hair & Beauty .Introduction to Setting up a Business .Introduction to Childcare All the courses were free to participants with a small charge for Certificated courses from an awarding body.

12

MOSSES COMMUNIT Y COURSE PROJECT COURSES

The delivery of courses in a community setting has attracted adults from the local community and many have been encouraged to move on to courses at Adult Learning & Bury College. Many people who enrolled on courses were volunteers, either with Mosses user groups, or from other Bury based community & voluntary sector organisations. Many existing volunteers have gained new skills on courses and increased in confidence. Many would recomend the experience they gained. COMMENTS FROM FEEDBACK FORM Help family to be safe on line. Computer security Better relationship with deaf sister Introduction to sign Language Confident to deal with emergencies Emergency fist aid for children I can use it for typing letters Basic Computers for the Confused If anything happens when I am coaching Emergency First Aid Easy to understand Food Hygiene Will help myself & the lady I share my home with to relax more and give us an activity to do together Hair & Beauty I want to start a new business Introduction to Setting Up A Small Business We will find out in the summer months if NLDC funding will be available to apply for in the next academic year or funding may be available from other sources to run a similar project.

13

MOSSES COMMUNIT Y COURSE PROJECT MOSSES JUNIOR CLUB

The Junior Youth Club provided a valuable service to children of east Bury aged between 8 - 12 years old. Most weeks saw 20 young people attending our session on Wednesday evenings. Over the summer, an innovation for the club was Outreach work in the Openshaw park to take advantage of the light evenings and to work with different young people within our area. The club has been funded by a variety of funding streams over the years which have increasingly become short term. Funding from Forever Manchester allowed us to continue the club up to the summer months this year . Unfortunately the club did not re-open after the summer and the Association is exploring strategic ways to continue to this work in conjunction with continuing the Youth club work (see the next page).

YOUTH CLUB
In liaison with Bury Council Youth Service a Youth Club for the over 12s met weekly. Members of the Junior Club where able to attend this club when they reached the appropriate age. Unfortunately from April 2011 the Club was a victim of Bury Councils Youth Service cuts . The Association is looking to find the resources to continue youth and Junior work in area. As we move into the new financial year a one-off grant from Bury Councils Youth Review Fund will allow us to employ a part time Youth Development Worker to work with 13 - 19 year olds. Which could be a launch pad for further work.

14

MOSSES USER GROUPS SENIOR SPORTS

Although we only have a membership of ten, we meet weekly every Tuesday afternoon and enjoy the friendship. We play Short Tennis and also pool, finding this keeps us fit and healthy. Our members come from Bury, Unsworth and Rochdale. Ages range from 70 to 80+. New members welcome, even under 70! All equipment is provided except trainers. Edith Tanner

ADVANCED MOTORISTS
The Bury Group of Advanced Motorists have continued to improve the standard of driving in the Bury area. New members are always welcome. We meet every Sunday morning at the Mosses Centre at 9.45 a.m. Pat Miller

MOSSES BRIDGE CLUB

The Bridge Club meets every Monday at 1pm, until 4pm. We play Rubber Bridge, but we do not teach. We welcome players who know the basics and we are very easy going and will help you to improve your game. At the moment we have ten members, but we need a few more. Anyone who would be interested in an afternoon of friendly Rubber Bridge please contact: Fred Pritchard 0161 767 9289

15

MOSSES USER GROUPS RED ROSES (OVER 60S GROUP)

The Red Rose (over 60s) Group continues to meet weekly on Monday afternoons from 1.30 3.30 pm. We have a varied programme (singers, entertainers, speakers, bingo, talks and quizzes etc). We had two short holidays to Cumbria (Gilsland Spa) and Scarborough and we hope to continue these this year in conjunction with the Rochdale Co-operative Members Group. We had three members lunches for St Georges Day, our 56th Birthday Party and a Christmas lunch in December all provided by the Mosses catering service and much enjoyed by our Group. Sadly, we lost several members over the year and we hope to recruit some new people to join us. A report of our Group goes to the Bury Times (Club & Society Page) as one way of getting publicity locally. Joan Ashworth

16

MOSSES USER GROUPS BLUES AND GRAYS LINE DANCING

Another year has passed, making it 8 years at the Mosses Centre with more new members joining. We meet every Wednesday at 8.15pm. until 10.15pm. The charge is 2 including one raffle prize every week. The Group is also a social evening for our members as everyone is very friendly. It keeps us fit and our minds active, people do as much or as little dancing as they wish and everyone is very helpful to beginners. We have special theme nights for Easter, 4th July, Halloween and Valentines night, a Summer Party and a Christmas party. At these we have live entertainment and potato pie supper or a buffet. We had one extra special night in March this year, when both Martin and I had our 70th Birthdays within 4 weeks of each other, so a surprise party was organised by members of our Group, with a potato pie supper, our favourite Country Singer Chris Raddings played live, plus decorations, cards and presents galore. Also a special Birthday cake was made by one of our Lady Members. We arrived as usual on the Wednesday night to find the room full of people all singing Happy Birthday. Martin and I were dumb struck and had no idea this was planned. They had also invited our friends, Family and Grandchildren. What a Night! One we will never forget. They are such a wonderful group of people who obviously appreciate all the hard work we put in, they make it all worthwhile and every Wednesday night enjoyable. Thanks as usual to the Management and Staff at the Mosses Centre for their help throughout the year, especially Sheila who serves our drinks from the bar, and always with a smile. Norma and Martin Gray

MOSSES USER GROUPS CIVIL SERVICE RETIREMENT FELLOWSHIP

members no longer able to attend. Things began to pick up following our AGM and between September 2011 and March 2012 we managed to squeeze in a talk Safeguarding your Finances, a Lancashire based quiz, a pub lunch, a Christmas lunch, two lunches at Bury College and a guided tour of the Fusiliers Museum which included a cream tea in the caf. The Bury Group is part of a national organisation and we are still very much dependent on our parent body, the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship (CSRF) for their generous financial support towards our on going running costs. With that assistance we are looking forward to another successful year at the Mosses, which has been our home sweet home since its opening in the early 1970s. John Vidler

Absences due to ill-health restricted our activities at the beginning of the year, but we continued to meet each week and maintained our visiting commitments to those

HARD OF HEARING SUPPORT GROUP

The Hard of Hearing Support Group meets on Monday mornings from 10 to 12 and offers members a lively and enjoyable start to the week. Each class begins with Diane telling us a story without voice. This helps us develop our lip-reading skills but also informs us about interesting things, whether it be Faberge Eggs, the numerous (and frankly unbelievable) uses of cucumbers, or the Golden Washroom. To keep our little grey cells active we are later tested on what we have learnt. We also practise finger-spelling and some BSL signs, plus speech movements, learning to hear with the eyes and tips for communication in different situations. Together these help us to become more confident in a social setting. At the time of writing we are looking forward to consolidating our skills by way of a visit to Towneley Hall near Burnley.

18

MOSSES USER GROUPS SOLIDARIT Y

BURY COMMITTEE IN SOLIDARITY WITH ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES OUR AIM: To offer a regular social event in which anyone seeking refuge will feel befriended and welcomed by local people. We have held 99 monthly events since we began in 2003. In the past 12 months we have been funded by a combination of money from Bury MBC via the Manchester Community Foundation and the cosmetic firm Lush. We regularly have 20 volunteers, with new members joining us to help with the work of running the Socials. Over the past 12 months we have welcomed at least 100 members to each social. These have been some guests who have been coming for the past 8 years, happy to make a date to meet friends and enjoy the happy atmosphere, but also newcomers who are welcomed and encouraged to make friends and get support from the well established community of refugees we now support. The benefit of offering a predictable, regular event each month is clear. Members come from many different cultures, countries and religions but all enjoy the chance to celebrate and relax with their friends. All find a welcome at the Mosses Centre and may become weekly members as a result of the kindness from staff and volunteers. At each social we have a room with second hand clothes, toys and household goods which are always appreciated. 3 Babies have been born to members this year and 2 more are expected soon. In addition many members, who have been terrified that they will be deported, have been granted the right to stay. We are so relieved for them and celebrate their courage. The members who received the good news some years ago are now applying for British Citizenship. This costs a lot and needs great determination, but has been granted to all who have applied so far. As a result many members have British Passports and are able to travel with their children to meet their extended family, to make contact at last with the friends they left when they fled, or are simply free to go on holiday.

19

MOSSES USER GROUPS

Some of our regular members suffered a lot this year from their experiences as asylum seekers, and still live in fear of being returned to life threatening circumstances and our members support each other in this situation. However, we have great concerns that some will become destitute and homeless, especially if they are single. Friends of Solidarity was set up as a Bank account to be used to support the first family made destitute by the Governments rules. They are now happily settled in London as British Citizens, and so our money is used to support anyone else in this terrible situation. We have enough money each week to support 2 individual homeless members, but in fact we have 6 members who have been refused and made homeless and without support. At present we are dependent on donations people give to us for this purpose and so these 6 members know they can come to the Mosses each week and get a warm welcome, a food parcel, courtesy of Porch, and some cash to use for necessary expenses. We are planning to continue with our socials on the second Saturday of each month, other than August. Thanks to the Mosses staff for all their help. Sue Arnall

THE EAGLES WING

A MUTUAL SUPPORT GROUP FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS AND LOCAL PEOPLE We are a mutual support group of friends made up of local people, asylum seekers and refugees. We are all members of the Mosses Centre and live in the Bury area and welcome people of all ages, nationality, sexuality and ability. We have no paid staff and all our members help to run our group meetings. Children are always welcome to our events, but parents MUST take care of them to keep them safe. We celebrate each others cultures and good fortune and help each other when there are problems. We are all equal and treat each other with respect and care. We all work to change things for the better for individual members and for refugees as a whole. We have an elected committee to make sure the group works in the interests of our members. Aggressive behaviour is not acceptable under any circumstance.

20

MOSSES USER GROUPS

We have continued to meet as a group at the Mosses Centre on Thursday afternoons from 1 3 pm. Volunteers have worked hard to welcome new members, make sure everyone enjoys the session, set up and clear away after the event. We have shared out second hand clothing, toys and household items throughout the year. In May 2011 we received a grant from Children in Need to pay for 3 family trips each year and to fund a baby and toddler crche commissioned from the Mosses and to pay for 3 of our children to attend the Mosses PreSchool so that their parents can attend the groups. All our sessions are organised and planned by our hard working volunteers . In April 2011 we organised a family trip to Blackpool, in partnership with the Womens Aid Group, and 175 members went in the 3 coaches. We all had a good day out and the ones who went to the Sandcastle Water park said it was wonderful. In July we took two coaches to Southport for the day. In January 2012 we took over 100 members to the pantomime in Bolton. In addition to this main session, we have also funded, using money from balances and the Allen Lane Foundation: MONDAYS The womens ESOL class, in partnership with Bury College TUESDAY MORNINGS Our volunteers see individual members for help and advice. WEDNESDAY MORNINGS The Sewing Group is as lively and successful as ever. FRIDAY Our volunteer, Dr Geoff continues to offer a range of psychological therapies to individuals by appointment in the mornings.

21

MOSSES USER GROUPS WOMENS AID GROUP

The Womens Aid Group was formed in March 2008 as a result of the ending of Bury Womens Aid. We are a group of women who meet every Monday morning at the Mosses centre to befriend each other and offer support and help to any woman who joins us. We are all ages and ethnic origins, and enjoy finding out about our differences and similarities. We pay for our children to attend the Mosses Pre school care so our members and the women who attend the English Class, get a break. The group is very warm and caring of its members and welcomes new women all the time. During this year two of our members have been made homeless and we have been able to support them with cash each week so that they can live with friends and be able to pay for some of their needs. The Womens Aid Group not only meets regularly but also organises several events and social activities for members and their families throughout the year. We also takes part in trips and events organised by other groups at the Mosses Centre.

This year we have been lucky to be invited to join a Trip to Blackpool Sandcastle Water Park, Southport in the summer and to the Pantomime in Bolton in January 2012. In the February school holidays we enjoyed a trip to Boomerang Play centre and to the Leisure centre where we had fun dancing Zumba. We also celebrated International Womens Day with the Asian Womens Group at the Polish Centre.

22

MOSSES USER GROUPS BURY GATEWAY

SOCIAL NIGHT This is the original part of Gateway. We started Gateway so that members could come along to meet their friends. This year we celebrate our 30th Birthday and we still have original members still coming to meet friends. We still have around a hundred members with sixty to seventy members attending each Thursday evening. Members can listen to music, dance, have a game of pool, and play air hockey, table football and dominoes. Maureen comes some weeks to give members the opportunity to have a go with crafts. They can also have a drink from the bar or a brew and a sandwich. We have a number of party night: Summer ball, Monster ball, Christmas party, valentines, and Easter bash. FUNDRAISING We have held our Annual Duck Race, Car Boot Sales, Christmas Draw and collections at Asda, Bury. These have been well supported throughout the whole year. HOLIDAYS We have been to Greenside in July and August and followed up with two weeks in Florida in October.

23
