A.1) THEINSTITUTE
TheIndianInstituteofTechnologyBombay(IITBombay)isoneofthehigherInstitutesofTechnology inthecountrysetupwiththeobjectivesofmakingavailablefacilitiesforhighereducation,research andtraininginvariousfieldsofScienceandTechnology.IITBombaywasestablishedin1958. The Institute is located at Powai in a campus extending over 220 hectares amidst picturesque surroundingswithViharandPowailakesoneitherside. At present, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral programmes are offered by Aerospace Engineering, Biosciences & Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Earth Sciences, Energy Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science Departments and by certainInterdisciplinarygroups. TheDepartmentofBiosciencesandBioengineeringoffersM.Sc.inBiotechnology,Ph.D.andM.Tech. programmesinBiomedicalEngineeringandM.Sc.Ph.D.DualDegreeProgrammeinBiotechnology. TheInstituteonanaverageadmits 1131candidatesfortheUndergraduateprogrammesand 1476 candidates for different Ph.D / Postgraduate programmes every year. Students from Bangladesh, Egypt,Ethiopia,Fiji,Iran,Iraq,Jordan,Mauritius,Malaysia,Nepal,Palestine,SriLanka,Vietnamand Yemen are also undergoing training in various programmes. In addition to these academic programmes,theContinuingEducationProgramme(CEPCell)organizesshort,intensivecoursesin specializedtopicsbothforpracticingengineersaswellasforteachersfromengineeringcolleges;and alsoconductsseminarandconferencesoncurrentscientificandtechnologicaldevelopments.Further, underQualityImprovementprogramme(QIP),teachersfromvariousengineeringcollegesalsojoin Instituteforthepostgraduateanddoctoralprogrammes.

A.2) RESEARCHFACILITIES
AllthedepartmentsoftheInstitutehavewellequippedresearchlaboratoriesandworkshopfacilities. Inaddition,thereareanumberofcentralfacilities,whichincludeComputerCentre,CentralLibrary and CentralWorkshop. The Central Library has a very large collection of books, back volumes of periodicals,standardspecificationsandotherliterature.TheLibrarynowhasmorethan3lakhsbooks andvolumesandsubscribestoover1500currentjournalsinScience,Engineering,Humanitiesand Social Sciences. The Computer Centre of IIT Bombay provides high end networked computing facilities. TheCentreofStudiesinResourcesEngineering(CSRE)establishedin1976bythethenMinistryof EducationandSocialWelfare,hasthefacilitiesandinfrastructureforresearchintheareaofNatural Resources exploration and management using modern tools of Remote Sensing and Geographic InformationSystems. The Centre for Research in NanoTechnology & Science (CRNTS), is well equipped for pursuing researchinnanotechnology.AlmostallsophisticatedtoolsrequiredforNanotechnologyresearchare housedhere. The Center for Environmental Science and Engineering (CESE) funded by the Department of Education, Govt. of India, is concerned with air and water quality management, computer aided designforwastewaterengineeringsystems,lowwastetechniques,etc. TheDepartmentofScienceandTechnology(DST),DefenseResearch&DevelopmentOrganization (DRDO) and Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) of Government of India, have sponsoredthesettingofaNationalGeotechnicalCentrifugeFacility(NGCF)tofacilitateresearchin frontierareas. The Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas (CTARA) is concerned with development, transferandimpactassessmentoftechnologyinthecontextofsocioeconomicdevelopmentofasmall region. To this end, the centre offers courses (coupled with field work) to impart necessary perspectivesandquantitativeskills The Industrial Design Centre (IDC), established in 1969, has followed an integrated and interdisciplinaryapproachtowardsdesigneducation.TheCentreoverthepastyearshasexperimented withdifferentmethodsindesigneducationtodevelopaflexiblestructuretosuittheneedsofstudents. SchoolsinCryogenics,LasersandLaserSystems,OffshoreEngineeringandManagementhavealso been established. New facilitiesunder the Thrust Area Programmes in fields like Microelectronics, MicroprocessorApplications,IntelligentSystems,Robotics,CAD/CAM,RemoteSensing,Telematics, etc.havebeencreated. Centre for Aerospace Systems Design & Engineering (CASDE) and Centre for Formal Design and Verification of Software (CFDVS) have been establishedrecently. The Institute has many research

collaborationswithleadinguniversitiesinUSA,Europe,Japan,andotherEastAsiancountries.Aspart ofthesecollaborations,thepostgraduatestudentsgetopportunitiestocarryoutjointresearchprojects withfacultyandstudentsfromtheseuniversities. TheCentreforDistanceEngineeringEducationProgramme(CDEEP)wasstartedbytheInstitutewith theexpressaimofprovidinghighqualitydistanceeducationinengineeringandsciencetoalarge numberofparticipantsthroughoutthecountryandabroad.CDEEPenvisagestosharetheexpertiseof IITBombayfacultywithstudentsandworkingprofessionalselsewhere.Thecoursesofferedthrough distanceeducationaretheverysameonesthataretakenbyIITBombaystudents.Toreachasmany learnersaspossible,CDEEPisusingdifferentmediumsandvarioustechnologies. Approximately 7 to 10 M.Tech. projects are taken up every year in collaboration with German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) wherein students work on their projects in reputed German UniversitieslikeAachen,Berlin,Darmstadt,Karlsruhe,StuttgartandDresden. ThelocationofIITBombayincloseproximitytoseveralleadingR&DCentersandmajorindustrial establishments offers excellent opportunities to interact with them and plan some research programmes in collaboration with them. The Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) coordinatescollaborativeprojectswithindustryandotherresearchorganizationssuchasBARC,TIFR andCSIR.TheInstituteisactivelycollaboratingwithseveralorganizationsofothercountriesona bilateralbasis.

TheInstituteisfullyresidentialandhas14hostelsforstudents.Eachhostelisanindependententity withitsownmessfacilities,recreationareas,etc.Howeverstudentsmaybepermittedtohavetheir own arrangements for accommodation outside campus. Some flatlets are available for married researchscholars. ExtracurricularactivitiesareprovidedbytheStudentsGymkhana.TheseactivitiesincludeSports, CulturalprogrammesandSocialService.VariousclubsoftheGymkhanaencourageindividualtalents ofstudentsinhobbiessuchaspainting,modeling,music,photography,aeromodellingandfabrication of electronic devices. The Institute offers Master of Technology programmes in various disciplines.
