I distinctly remember the moment that changed my life forever. It happened in August of 2001. I weighed close to 410 pounds. Over the previous 12 years, I had gained more than 200 pounds. I had just gotten o Route 4 in New Jersey at the Paramus/River Edge exit. As I was getting o the exit, a thought stunned me like an electric shock: My body wanted to be fat, and as long as it wanted to be fat, there was nothing I could do to lose weight. During the twelve years in which I gained two hundred pounds, I had tried everything I could to lose weight, including every diet under the sun from low-fat diets to low-carb diets and everything in between. No matter what I did to try to lose weight, my body fought me tooth and nail, and in the end, it always won. From the moment I made this realization, I renounced dieting forever. I decided that instead of trying to force myself to lose weight against my bodys will, I would turn my attention toward understanding why my body wanted to be fat in the rst place.

Fat Triggers: the real reason we become overweight

In his younger years, Jon had studied biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. Later on in life, he began researching hormones and the mind-body connection. He plowed through twenty or thirty research reports a day, and even dived into meditation, hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming and consciousness research. Jon soon became an expert in the most cutting-edge chemistry of obesity and weight loss. And just as importantly, he also began listening to his own body. #1: Chronic Dieting

When you reduce your normal daily intake of food, your body enters a famine state. Studies show that being in this state causes your body to produce 20 percent more of the hormone ghrelin which forces you to overeat after the diet ends.

Diets aren't just ineective... they actually make you fat! Studies at the University of California show that up to 95% of people who lose weight through dieting end up heavier soon after the diet ends.

#2: Lifestyle Stress

Regardless of whether your job or personal life is bombarding you with emotional stress, physical stress, mental stress or subconscious stress, your body reacts to it in the same way: it releases a chemical called cortisol into your body, which makes you gain weight AND stops you from losing weight.

Self-defeating emotions like powerlessness, insecurity and not being able to say no to people result in stress, which in turn releases the fat-promoting chemical cortisol into your body.

A study by the University of Pittsburgh on over 100,000 women found that those who were in good emotional health were 14 percent more likely to live longer, and 30 percent less likely to die from heart disease.

#4: Inadequate Nutrition

Inadequate nutrition leads to a form of insulin resistance that impairs your digestion and thrusts your body into a nutritional famine. When this happens, your body will tell you to keep eating until you get the nutrients you need.

There are three main nutrients lacking in a typical modern diet: protein, Omega-3 fatty acids and live foods. A deciency in any of them can result in rapid weight gain.

#5: Poor Digestion

When you eat bad food, that long tube in your body called the digestive tract suers the consequences. The result is a nutritional famine, which puts your body in fat storage mode, increases your hunger and makes weight loss impossible.

Poor nutrition and digestion promotes insulin resistance a condition where the natural hormone insulin becomes less eective at lowering blood sugars. This can cause a variety of problems, including abnormal hunger and type 2 diabetes. Over 100 million Americans suer from insulin resistance.

#7: Limiting Beliefs

One of the most common limiting beliefs that can sabotage your weight is having an overweight family member, and believing its in your genes to be fat. Trying and failing at diets and exercise routines can also leave you feeling unworthy and incapable of losing weight.

The placebo eect is a famous example of the power of our beliefs over reality: studies show that at least 30% of clinical patients report positive results after swallowing a sugar pill that they believe is genuine medication.

#8: Harmful Medication

Studies have shown there are over 50 common medications that cause weight gain, including anti-depressants, insulin, cortisol, steroids, hormone replacement and birth control. Sometimes the eect is so intense, you can gain up to 10 pounds a month.

Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes you to stop breathing as you sleep, sometimes hundreds of times a night, without even realizing it. This reduces your blood oxygen to dangerously low levels, which leaves you chronically exhausted and prone to unhealthy food cravings.
Poor sleep quality also inuences the level of leptin and ghrelin hormones in your body, which control feelings of hunger and fullness. Leptin is famously known as the satisfaction hormone - and according to doctors, when you dont sleep well, you produce less leptin and therefore don't feel as satised after eating.
