of Math? Do you think of numbers, computations, or equations? How about polygons, theorems, and calculus? The subject can be simple or it can also be complex. In ancient societies, men used counting based on their ten fingers. Eventually, they were able to develop symbols for each number and operations. Currently, Math can now be used to explain even motion and space.

Math today, based on the US K-12 curriculum, has seven content domains. These are Number Sense, Algebra and Functions, Geometry and Measurement, Trigonometry, Probability, Statistics, and Data Analysis, Linear Algebra, and Calculus. You have to possess comprehensive knowledge in all of these domains in order to be proficient in Math. Below are the different topics that you have to review for each content domain in order to achieve excellence in Math. These are recommended topics by the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (www.abcte.org) in compliance with the No Child Left Behind. Number Sense • • • • • • • Real Number Properties Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic Absolute Values Algebraic Expressions Complex Numbers Operations with Real Numbers Field Properties with Real Numbers

Algebra and Functions • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Parallel and Perpendicular Lines Absolute Values Relations and Functions Solving Systems of Equations Compositions and Inverses of Functions Sequences and Series Solving Linear Equations and Inequalities Graphing Linear Equations and Inequalities Finding the Equation of a Line Algebraic Functions Factoring Polynomials Simplifying Rational Polynomials Solving and Graphing Quadratic Equations Binomial Expansion Conic Sections Laws of Integral Exponents Laws of Fractional Exponents Exponential Functions

Geometry and Measurement • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Symmetry and Space Classifying Two- and Three-Dimensional Solids Two-Dimensional Representations of Three-Dimensional Objects Triangles Similarity and Ratio Convex Polygons Quadrilaterals Straightedge and Compass Constructions Skew Lines Special Triangles Area of Triangles and Special Quadrilaterals The Pythagorean Theorem Circles The Equation of a Circle Geometric Proofs using Coordinate Systems Measurement Measuring Two-Dimensional Figures

•

Measuring Three-Dimensional Figures

Trigonometry • • • • • • • • • • Trigonometric Ratios Law of Sines & Law of Cosines The Unit Circle Introduction to Tangent, Cotangent, Secant, and Cosecant Pythagorean Trigonometric Identities Amplitude, Frequency, Period, and Phase Shift Graphing Trigonometric Functions and Inverse Trigonometric Functions Half-Angle and Double-Angle Formulas Rectangular and Polar Coordinates

Probability, Statistics, and Data Analysis • • • • • • • Defining Probability Combinations and Permutations Utilizing Combinations and Permutations Independent and Dependent Events Beginning Statistics Data Displays, Normal Distributions and Lines of Best Fit

Linear Algebra • • • • Matrices—Operations and Inverses Matrices for Systems of Equations Geometric Interpretations Special Matrix Products

Calculus • • • • • • Limits and Continuity Differential Calculus Differential Calculus II Integral Calculus Differential Equations, Sequences, and Series

Complicated? Boring? Difficult? Not really. You have to give yourself time to read more about Math than just agonizing over the computations. Do not limit yourself to textbooks or activity books. Moreover, there is interactive multimedia that you can use for your review. You will learn to love it if you know how it developed through the centuries and how the mathematicians derived the operations. The mysterious symbols will be revealed if you study it more closely.
