ABSTRACT
Haptic technology is a revolutionary technology which has the potential to open a new window in the virtual world. Haptic technology promises to bring profound change to the way humans interact with information and communicate ideas. Recent advances in computer interface technology now permit us to touch and manipulate imaginary computer generated objects in a way that evokes compelling sense of tactile realness. This is what makes Haptic technology promising, as the sensation of touch is more effective when compared to vision and hearing. In simple words, what Haptic technology does to the sense of touch is what computer graphics do to the sense of vision. The sensation of touch is created by applying mechanical forces/vibrations that are created by use of actuators which convert electrical stimuli into mechanical action. When combined with visual display Haptic technology can be used to train people for tasks requiring hand-eye co-ordination such as surgery and space ship maneuvers. Haptic technology has found its ground in many fields and is in the process of effective implementation. It is more significant for applications such as gaming, tele-operation in hazardous environment, scientific discovery and visualization, engineering, education and training, and most effectively used in medical simulation. Haptic technology has brought a change in medical education, providing a realistic and multisensory learning experience. It adds tactile realism to medical products such as surgical robotics, enhancing clinical proficiency and product usability. In this paper we mention how sensors and actuators are used for tracking the position and movement of haptic devices (working of haptic devices), we discuss the applications of haptic technology predominantly in surgical field also giving its future scope.
