Rewriting Frankenstein
How can your environments impact who you are and the choices you make? Pick one of the following scenes from the play. Think about how the situation affected the Monster. Think about how if the scene unfolded differently, the Monster may have changed. Rewrite one of the following to show how they would have impacted the Monster and his choices in life if the situation had been different. 1. 2. 3. 4. When Frankenstein sees the monster for the first time and his reaction is to run away When the monster is in a town, where dogs and towns people are after him When Felix shoots the monster When the monster kills William

Your scene should have between 2-4 characters. 1 or 2 of these characters may be your own characters (not from the play). Your scene will have two parts: 1. What happens to the monster (the situation) 2. His choices as a result (the impact) Which scene will you rewrite? What is the situation in the scene? What do others do to the Monster? Scene 4: The monster comes to a little boy wanting to be friends. The little boy gets scared and tells him he will tell his brother Frankenstein about the monster. Then the monster gets angry from hearing Frankensteins name he lets out his anger on the boy and kills him.

How does this affect the Monster? What impact does it have on his life? What choices does he make as a result? The monster was angry, which makes him burn inside and become evil because of the way Frankenstein treated him. The monster now is full of anger, hatred and revenge and he will take it out on the world and destroy innocent beings. He chooses to kill Frankensteins brother and destroy beings that Frankenstein treasures a lot. He does not care anymore for the human race and does not mind destroying innocent beings. How will this affect the Monster? What impact will it have on his life? What choices will he make as a result? The monster will have more than one friend and feel as though he is being cared for. No one will die because of hatred and revenge therefor leading to a better life for everyone. He will live with his wife in a place of peace and never forget his friends.

How will you change the situation? How might things happen differently during the scene? Scene 4: Everything the monster has done has happened. The monster is in the Forest by the river. The monster ran away from Felixs house and now he is wondering what to do, I will look for an innocent child that cannot harm me I will become friends and live together far away from here. He walks down the river bank hiding behind trees. Then there by the river playing is a boy he is playing with his boat. The monster thinks how I can make friends. Hello, what is your name? the boy turns around he sees the monster and stares very scared. Dont hurt me, or I will tell my brother Herr Frankenstein. The monster stared at the boy with fear, this boy was the brother

Name: Date: of his creator the one who abandoned him and did not care? He would tell this boy his story and make friends with him, but I guess I cant take him from his family. The monster explains the past months and how his story went. At the end of this story the boy introduces himself and offers to help talk to his brother. The next act is in Frankensteins study in Geneva. Where Frankenstein is talking with Elizabeth. They are wondering about William, when the little boy rushes in the monster close behind him. Frankenstein is shocked what was his brother doing with this monster? He tries to get William away from the Monster but William explains why the monster is no harm and he is in need of help, and how they met and are now friends. William explains his plan to help the monster and Frankenstein and Elizabeth agree to help. While getting the plan together the monster and William become great friends. Then Williams plan is finally ready they create the monster a friend and the monster decides to leave Geneva with his friend the next day. The next day William is sad but happy for the monster he will never forget him. Rewrite the scene using your ideas from the purple boxes above. Set: Lab in Geneva- This is a room that has a few specimens a chair and table there is a lamp on the table, in this set 3 years later they have a ladder and a hanging bed. Woods- It is near a river and there are trees and bushes all around. Lighting, Sound and Special Effects: Lab in Geneva- L: Lamp light, Light flashes S: There is the wind blowing in the background, SE: There is a big bang when William walks in, later there are wedding bells in the background. Woods- L: Beams of light from different directions. S: The river flowing and the blowing wind. SE: There is no SE in this scene.

Props: Lab in Geneva- Table, Chair, Cupboard with few specimens, later hanging bed, suitcase, ladder. Woods- Trees, river, bushes, boat (toy)

Description of Characters: Frankenstein: A scientist full of great new ideas. His best friend is Clerval and Elizabeth is his cousin. Elizabeth: Frankensteins cousin. She is small and scared of many things. She is mostly cautious. Monster: The monster is a big man with many scars and cuts that have been stitched. He loves and asks for a friend, and assistance through life. He is Frankensteins creation. Monsters Wife: She is created as a friend for The Monster. She married him and vowed that she would not leave him and care for him with the rest of her life. William: He is Frankensteins little brother. He is shy and sweet. He cares for others and loves to make new friends. Why the set is like this: This is the way I chose to do the set because in the first act I decided it would be awhile he had been at Felixs house, so therefor he would be wondering around in the forest near the woods too scared to go out, I decide that this was the part he met William in and it was by the river, this is why I decided to make it that I would be by the river bank and since there are many trees there are light rays. In the second act we are in Frankensteins study in Geneva in this act we are in a furnished room (stage) that has a chair and a table and maybe a few specimens, I made it this way because this lab in Geneva is the one that Frankenstein hasnt really worked at, therefor not many specimens have been collected, the room is light by a lamp light on the table and there is a slight breeze outside. In act 3 we are in Frankensteins study again but this is 3 years later and he has been working on building a female monster, therefor there are all the tests around and the monsters wife is ready to come alive, in this act there is a storm for they have to electrify life into the monsters wife.
