AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD By Sophia Todd
I have met some remarkable people living here among us, and I may be prejudiced, but I believe that Harold Jacobson is at the top of my list. This 98 year ‘Young’ man has demonstrated to all of us, his dedication to others. Over the years, he won many awards and honors due to his willingness to care for people who were needy or broken in mind or body. Since becoming a resident of Fellowship, he continues to assist wherever needed. We have seen Harold setting up tables and chairs for Activities when some special event is planned. Then, he is part of the ‘clean up’ crew afterwards. He also decorates the room for the occasion. He continues to exercise at the Fitness Center, but also with the Tone and Strength class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. In this class, he welcomes all late comers with a chair and weights. That is where I first met Harold. Always kind, always helpful, always words of encouragement to others. He has been assisting Nancy, a stroke patient, with walking. Something she had not been able to do. She has made unexpected progress, thanks to Harold. And, whenever he has time, he works with beads and makes jewelry. Folks, this is a special man...and I am privileged to call him my friend. Harold, Fellowship Square is lucky to have you as a resident.

CINQUAIN FOR SPRING By Dotty Dittmar
THE FLIGHT By Fran Wells
I dreamt I was flying...flying… My shackles all cast aside— The earthbound...me cut loose—cut free In a sky so high! So wide! The entangling webs of everydayness Melted with every care, And I rose with the hawk on sun-bright wings on a column of sun-bright air. I spiraled and turned, doing loop-the-loops Till the earth was far from sight, Caught up in the beauty — the ecstasy Of free, unfettered flight. And then I was plummeting straight to earth. I awoke with a start! Crying! Earthling once more… no wings to soar. Still… I dreamt that I was flying.
In the stillness of the night I lie awake aware of tumbling thoughts If I had not known pain, How could I know the suffering Christ? He died for my sins. My response is to love.

Do you remember those nasty book reports our English teacher required us to make? I’ll bet that reading those books so interfered with our other activities that we sometimes found ways to fake those reports. I know that I did because football, baseball and trying to impress girls were all more important than books. Besides, those teachers tried to make us read classics while we wanted to read books of lesser value and renown. As we look back, we often realize that the teachers were trying to steer us in the right direction and to establish in us a life-long love of reading. Now is the time to recall some of the those books and give them a try. Many of us hated Shakespeare because reading his great plays was difficult. Try him again. I believe that you’ll see his work differently now. Some other books that you should read now or read again are Huckleberry Finn, Treasure Island, Count of Monte Cristo, Pride and Prejudice, Iliad and Odyssey, Of Mice and Men, African Queen, All quiet on the Western Front, Don Quixote, Lost Horizon, and so many more. I bet you can recall titles that your teacher wanted you to read and you didn’t. Now is the time. If your eyes are a little dim, try Large Type or Audio books. Libraries and bookstores have a good variety. In the memory of a beloved teacher, try to make up now what you missed in class. Books are indeed the path to everywhere. And remember that books are more fun that TV ever was.
