INT. BASEMENT - NIGHT Under a dim light, CORA a 25-year-old girl, places various objects in boxes. An OLD LAMP goes to the box labeled "household items", A toaster goes to the box labeled "Electrical Appliances", a blouse goes to the box labeled "Used Clothing." Cora stops for a moment to catch her breath, puts her arm across his forehead to remove accumulated sweat. Cora turns her eyes to the floor when she notices something under a shelf, she crouches and tries to reach the object with her hand, but it’s far and she can’t reach it. Cora looks around when she sees a BROOMSTICK. She gets up takes the stick and returns back to the shelf. Cora bends down and place the stick under the shelf and try to bring the object with the help of the stick, after trying a few times, the dusty object appears. Cora takes the stick and places it beside her. Cora grasps the object, her eyes opened to see what she has in her hand, a battered old TEDDY BEAR. Cora remains motionless watching the bear in her hand, until the VOICE of her friend AMELIA, 24, takes her out of her trance. AMELIA(OS) Hey! pizza is here! Cora shakes her head, takes the bear to a box labeled "Toys." CORA I’m almost done. Cora takes the box and climbs the stairs quickly. INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT Cora comes out of the basement and puts the toy’s box on the table. Cora goes to the sink to wash, while Amelia places the dishes on the table. Amelia sees the bear and takes it. AMELIA You’re not thinking in giving this bear away? It’s broken and missing an eye.
Cora turns, takes the bear abruptly from Amelia and places it back in the box. Amelia is shocked by the reaction of Cora. CORA I found it down there, I still don’t know what to do with it. AMELIA Well, I was just saying. It’s too old to donate. Cora takes the box. CORA I’m taking this out. Cora leaves the kitchen carrying the box. INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT Cora and Amelia sit at the table. Amelia takes a sip of a glass of red wine and stares at Cora. Cora plays with her glass of wine and a slice of pizza half eaten lays in front of her. AMELIA Didn’t you like it? Cora looks up. CORA What? AMELIA You didn’t even listen to me. Amelia leans back with the glass of wine in her hand. CORA I’m not very hungry that’s all. AMELIA What are you thinking? Cora sneers. CORA Nothing. Amelia gets up and picks up the dishes.
AMELIA I know it’s hard to go back to this house after so long. Cora drinks what’s left of the cup in one stroke. CORA It’s something I couldn’t avoid any longer. Cora gets up and heads to the sink, leaves the wine glass inside. Amelia takes it and washes it. CORA (CONT´D) Stop that, tomorrow we can do it ... It’s late let’s go to sleep. AMELIA I’m almost done go ahead. CORA Good night! Cora leaves the kitchen. INT. LIVING ROOM - CONTINUED Cora approaches to the toy’s box, takes the bear and carries it with her as she goes upstairs. From the kitchen door, Amelia observes Cora concerned. INT. ROOM - NIGHT Cora sleeps, a NOISE wakes her up, she rustles under the sheets trying to fall sleep again, but the noise continues. Alarmed Cora raises to see the cause of the noise, in front of her she sees a HUMAN SILHOUETTE against the moonlight. CORA Amelia, is that you? The figure walks to the foot of the bed, the moonlight illuminates the figure to reveal a BOY about four years old with the teddy bear in his hand. Cora remains still with her eyes wide open. The child approaches Cora and sees his pale face that comes close to her, in that moment Cora wakes up exalted, breathing rapidly and sweating. Cora jumps out of the bed, she sees the teddy bear on the chair. Cora takes the bear and sits on the floor crying.
INT. CORRIDOR - DAY Amelia KNOCKS Cora’s door AMELIA Hey sleepyhead time to get up. Amelia doesn’t receive an answer. AMELIA (CONT´D) I’m coming in. Amelia takes the doorknob and turns it over. INT. ROOM - CONTINUED Amelia opens the door and enters the room, Cora is gone so is the teddy bear. INT. HABERDASHERY - DAY Cora comes into the store, her phone rings, Cora takes it out of her bag and sees is Amelia calling. Cora places the phone in her bag unanswered. Cora approaches the counter where a LADY in her 50s attends a CUSTOMER. Cora stands next to the person and waits her turn. The client leaves with a thank you gesture, which the lady returns with a smile. The lady sees Cora while she fixes her glasses. LADY Good Morning! How may I help you? Cora returns the greet with a nervous smile. CORA Good Morning! I’d like some help with some materials that I need. LADY Tell me, what would that be? Cora takes the bear out of the bag and shows it to the Lady. CORA You see, I want to restore this bear, or at least improve it.
The Lady takes the bear and examines it, she sees that bear misses an eye, has moisture damages from being in the basement, and an arm is almost to come out. The Lady looks up. LADY To tell you the truth is better if you buy a new one. The Lady returns the bear to Cora. CORA This bear has sentimental value and I want it back. The Lady sees a few tears come out from Cora’s eyes. The Lady SIGHS and takes the bear back and puts it on the counter and takes her glasses off. LADY Well young lady, it seems you really care about the bear... with a little work I can make it look better. Cora dries her tears. CORA You have no idea how grateful I am. Of course I’ll pay for the job. LADY OK, it’s going to take some time since it’s very damaged. If you leave your number I’ll call you when it’s ready. The lady hands a piece of paper to Cora, grabs the bear and puts it back in the bag and behind the counter. Cora writes on the paper and returns it to the lady. CORA Thank you very much! Cora waves goodbye to the lady and leaves the store.
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT The front door opens and Cora enters, sitting on the couch is Amelia. AMELIA it’s about time you showed up! Cora leaves her purse on a table that is at the entrance, and sits on the couch. CORA Sorry, I didn’t mean to worry you, I just needed some fresh air. AMELIA You didn’t even answer my calls! I was really worry. Cora sits back, while Amelia turns her eyes to Cora and plants a fixed stare at her. AMELIA (CONT´D) I don’t mean to pry, but since you found that bear, you’ve been acting weird. CORA The truth is I never told you the whole story, in fact I’ve never told anyone. Amelia takes Cora’s hand and smile. AMELIA Sometimes if we tell, we feel better. Whenever you’re ready I’ll be here. Cora takes her hand away from Amelia’s hand. up. Cora glances at Amelia. CORA I lived in this house until I was about 10 ... Amelia stops, and returns to sit next to Cora. Cora turns her gaze to the CHAIR that is at the corner next to the door. Amelia gets
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT (15 YEARS AGO)- FLASHBACK A ten-year-old CORA sits in the chair wearing a pajama, her face is red for being crying. LUCY, Cora’s mother, a young woman about 35-year-old, is elegantly dressed standing in front of little Cora. LUCY You know you can’t go with us, you’re grounded young lady! Immediately, NICK, a 4-year-old boy, comes out the kitchen running around the living room with the TEDDY BEAR in his hand. LUCY grabs him and lifts him up on her arms, looks at him with a serious expression. LUCY (cont’d) What have I told you about running in the house? Nick lowers his head and hugs her mother tightly. The teddy bear slips from his hand and falls to the floor, Nick tries to reach it. LUCY Let’s tide you up. Lucy takes Nick with her upstairs, unaware that the bear is on the floor and Nick looks at him desperately. Cora follows them with her eyes and when they disappear, Cora gets up, picks the bear up and runs to the kitchen. INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT Little Cora opens the basement’s door. INT. BASEMENT - NIGHT Cora goes down the stairs, she stops when hears her mother’s voice. LUCY (OS) Darling we’re ready. Cora throws the bear into the basement and climbs the stairs running. The bear falls on the top of a shelf, it staggers and falls behind it.
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT Cora runs and sits in the chair again. Lucy, Nick and JOSEPH, Cora’s father a man about 38-year-old, come down the stairs. Nick cries, Lucy looks everywhere. LUCY (To Nick) Sweety, Are you sure you lost it here? Nick nods with tears in his eyes. Lucy keeps looking with Nick in her hand. LUCY (CONT´D) Cora, Have you seen your brother’s bear? Cora draws a small smile, but then turns serious again. CORA No mommy I haven’t seen it. Joseph, with car’s keys in hand, goes to the door. JOSEPH Honey! It’s time to go, we’ll be late. Lucy sees her wrist watch. Lucy bends and cleans Nick’s face. LUCY It’s time to go. We look for him later. Nick cries even more and puts some resistance, Lucy has not other choice than to lift him up. On her way to the door, Lucy stops in front of Cora. LUCY (CONT´D) Now go to your room and obey your aunt. Cora nods and gets up, she walks to the bottom of the stairs, when she hears the front DOOR CLICK, she returns and opens it.
9. EXT. HOUSE’S ENTRANCE - CONTINUED Cora sees her little bother glued to the window’s car with tears in his eyes. Cora shivers and stares as the car leaves. AUNT (OS) Cora! Cora closes the door. END FLASHBACK. INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT - PRESENT Amelia looks at Cora while she cries with her face down. CORA It was the last time I saw them, I can’t forget Nick’s face, I took from him his treasure. He loved that bear. Amelia hugs Cora. AMELIA It was not your fault it was a little girl mischief, there was no way of knowing what would happen. Cora sits back and dries her tears. CORA When my aunt told me about the accident, I went nuts, I went to the basement to look for the bear, I thought if I find it he would be back. Cora stands and walks to the window, Amelia follows her with her eyes. CORA (CONT´D) I spent all night down there I never found it, my aunt found me the next day. Amelia gets up and walks toward Cora. AMELIA That’s why you moved. Cora turns to Amelia. (CONTINUED)
CORA Yes, but I never told anyone what I did. I always avoid to return here and the house been closed since then. Cora lowers her head. AMELIA What are you going to do now? CORA I’m not sure, for now a lady it’s restoring it. Amelia hugs Cora. AMELIA I think you should give it back and apologize. Cora pushes Amelia. CORA Give it back? But how? AMELIA Well you take it to his grave, it’s what I mean. Cora walks back and forth like a caged lion. CORA Since the service, I haven’t return there. Amelia stops Cora and holds her firmly by her shoulders. Cora does not look at her. AMELIA You must confront them and ask for forgiveness. You need that so you can go on with your life. Amelia keeps holding Cora, Cora raises her head and looks at Amelia’s eyes. CORA That must be what he wants. Amelia shakes her head and looks at Cora intrigued.
CONTINUED: CORA (CONT´D) Last night I saw him in my dream. Amelia backtracks releasing Cora. AMELIA Your bother? CORA Yes, he had the bear and he wanted to tell me something but I woke up. Both friends stare at each other.
FADE TO BLACK EXT. PARK - DAY Cora sits on the bench, next to her a BAG. Cora looks at it a couple times, finally she opens the bag and takes the bear out. The bear looks better condition with new eyes, the arms are now sewn, the plush still shows some damages, but not as much as it did before. Cora holds it and looks at it over and over. Cora jumps out when someone touches her in the back. Cora looks back to see her friend Amelia. AMELIA Sorry, did I startle you? CORA What you think? Amelia sits next to Cora. AMELIA Looks pretty good. CORA Yes, the lady did a good job. Cora puts back the bear into the bag. AMELIA You’re ready? CORA I guess. Amelia offers her hand to Cora. Cora hesitates for a moment, she SIGHS and puts her hand over Amelia’s hand and both stand at the same time.
EXT. CEMETERY - DAY Cora and Amelia stand in front of TOMBS that read: "Joseph Harrison", "Lucy Harrison" and "Nick Harrison". Amelia holds the bag. Cora takes a DEEP BREATH, Amelia puts her hand on Cora’s shoulder and gives her the bag. Cora takes the bag and takes the bear out of it, Amelia takes the empty bag, pats on Cora shoulder, and walks away to give Cora space. Cora bents and places the bear on Nicks’s grave. CORA Here I brought you your bear...I never had the chance to apologize for what I did. Tears start to come out of Cora’s eyes. CORA(CONT´D) I hope that from now on it’d be with you wherever you are. Cora looks at her Mom and Dad’s graves still in tears. CORA (CONT´D) Dad, Mom... I’m so sorry for being so unkind and spoiled. Cora gets up, dries her tears, tries to smile while she looks at the sky. Cora runs toward Amelia, they hug and walk away. A small hand grabs the BEAR, the boy hugs the bear and looks up to his parents, they smile and see how Cora leaves. FADE OUT
