The Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID) views art as integral to our community’s fabric. Access to public art improves the quality of life, enhances our neighborhoods identity, strengthens economic development and tourism, and enriches the spirit and pride of our citizens. The Downtown Albany BID is pleased to invite upstate New York artists to apply for the 2013 Sculpture in the Streets program. This year’s exhibit titled: All Signs Point to Downtown will restore old retail signs, also referred to as ghost signs, on the sides of our historic buildings retelling the story of downtown Albany as the commercial hub for the Capital Region prior to the creation of suburban malls. Now through April 12, 2013, the BID is accepting submissions from artists interested in participating. Painting will take place between mid-April to mid-June and an honorarium will be paid based on the size and complication of the retail sign. Eligibility  Sculpture in the Streets is open to artists primarily residing within 150 miles of Albany, NY.  Artists in all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply, but must be able to free hand letters, pay close attention to detail and line work. Previous work would include murals, signs and stencil work. This project has a lot of focus on lettering and layout on a large scale.  Artists must be comfortable painting 20 feet or more above ground. Artists must be able to re create from an image they are provided.  No application fee is required. Guidelines for Exhibit  The BID will match artists with a specific sign and building location.  The BID will provide photos of the original artwork for the signs. Some locations will be straight restoration, while others will be a recreation of a historic sign.  The BID will provide scaffolding or lifts to access the building. Artists must attend and adhere to OSHA training rules for the length of the project.  Painting must be completed within a two-six week window depending on the size and complication of the sign.  Paint will be provided by the BID.
