Climate Journal
Physical Geography
Jaclyn Kondrk
11/23/2011

Climate distribution throughout the world is significant because our lifestyles are directly
influenced by the type of climate we live in. The relatively new study of anthropogenic biomes offers an
innovative view of human activities and lifestyles in a particular area based on the type of climate in that
area. As shown on my climate station anthrome map, it is clear to see that there are many different
anthropogenic biomes spread across the world. The positions of these biomes are essentially based on
the Kppen climate classifications of the world.
In my climate journal, I have described ten climate stations and their climate characteristics, as
well as define their Kppen climate classification. In doing so, I have discovered that there can be
significant changes in climate within relatively short distances, as in Botswana and Tanzania. The climate
of a particular area is determined by that areas position on the Earth, which is why there are such
differences in climate around the world. I have found that climate distribution is based on the amount of
sunlight and intensity, as well as the amount of water in the system in the area. Based on my journal
findings, I can conclude that climate distribution seems to change with latitude, as well as altitude. This
is noticeable on my climate station anthrome map, because the representative colors for each anthrome
seems to have a lateral pattern. It can be seen that in areas around the equator, climate is hot and dry,
or hot and wet in some areas. My Orlinga, Russia climate station is located relatively close to the North
Pole, and it is evident that there are freezing temperatures and snowfall.
In conclusion, climate distribution is very important to study because it is our very way of life.
Human activity also influences climate, so it is imperative that we research our impact and create
climate change models for the future.

Climate Station Name: Cherry Point MCAS

Longitude/Latitude: (34.9, -76.8833)
Number of Years on Record: 66 yrs
Elevation: 11 meters
Climate Characteristics: Cherry Point, North Carolina seems to have seasons that are similar to our area
in New Jersey. They experience the four seasons of spring, summer, fall and winter. They also
experience higher amounts of rain during the summer months and in the spring, especially in March. In
1946, there seems to be a record high amount of rain, which I hypothesize is due to hurricane season in
this area between July and September. Low minimum temperatures at certain times may be due to a
noreaster storm. Also notice that in the maximum temperature table there are many months that lie
outside of the standard deviation. This is also evident in the maximum temperature graph, where all
years have summer months well above the long term line.
Anthrome: Densely to moderately populated area, some coastal areas, forested areas, and residential
areas.
Kppen Climate Classification: Most of the state has a humid subtropical climate, except in the higher
elevations of the Appalachians which have a subtropical highland climate. (Cfa, Cfb, Dfb)

Climate Station Name: Big Bear Lake, CA

Number of Years on Record: 49 yrs
Latitude/ longitude: (34.244, -116.9039)
Elevation: 2060.4 meters
Climate Characteristics: Big Bear Lake, California appears to have a definite spring, summer, winter, and
fall. They experience most of their precipitation during the winter months, which presumably occurs as
snowfall because of the low average temperatures during that time. 1961 was a particularly cold year,
with three months falling outside of the standard deviation range for minimum temperatures. Also, in
2010, there were two large rainfall events that fell outside of the standard deviation for precipitation.
The mountainous location of this climate station allows for a wide range of temperatures, from fairly hot
in the summer months with small amounts of rain, to very cold in the winter with more precipitation.
Anthrome: Big Bear Lake is the biggest recreation lake in Southern California. A number of people who
reside in this region rely on the tourism and ski resorts. Many tourists visit Big Bear Lake year-round
because the weather is always favorable for seasonal activities. According to my climate station
anthrome map, this area is considered a residential rainfed mosaic.
Kppen Climate Classification: This area has a Mediterranean type of climate, with four seasons and
mostly sunny days throughout the year. (Csb)

Climate Station Name: Mercedes, Uruguay

Longitude/Latitude: (-33.25, -58.067)
Number of Years on Record: 79 yrs
Elevation: 17 meters
Climate Characteristics: The Kppen climate classification states that this area receives sufficient rain in
all months, but it seems they receive the most precipitation during the summer months. Notice in the
precipitation table that there are many values that lie outside of the standard deviation. This is also
evident in the graph for precipitation, where many months are well above the long term average
precipitation. This area experiences four seasons, but snow is uncommon.
Anthrome: Mercedes is located on the banks of the Negro River, and so it is an important commercial
port. There is also a significant amount of agriculture that takes place here, as well as small industry.
According to my climate station anthrome map, this area is in between populated irrigated cropland and
residential rainfed crop land.
Kppen Climate Classification: Warm temperature climates with sufficient precipitation in all months.

Climate Station Name: Francistown, Botswana

Latitude/Longitude: (-21.217, 27.5)
Elevation: 1001 meters
Number of Years on Record: 51 yrs
Climate Characteristics: According to the precipitation table and temperature tables, this area of
Botswana appears to experience rainy season and a dry season, and the temperatures vary from cold to
fairly hot.
Anthrome: Francistown is the second largest city in Botswana, and is located between two rivers. It was
the site of the first gold rush in southern Africa, and is surrounded by old mines. Currently, the area is
mined for copper, nickel, and cobalt. Agriculture and tourism is also significantly important in this area.
According to my climate station anthrome map, this area is in between dense settlements, residential
rangeland, rainfed mosaic villages, and residential irrigated cropland.
Kppen Climate Classification: Most of Botswana is considered hot semiarid steppe (BSh). The
exception is the extreme north of the country, which is classified as a dry tropical climate (Aw).

Climate Station Name: Tabora Airport, Tanzania

Latitude/Longitude: (-5.083, 32.833)
Elevation: 1182 meters
Number of Years on Record: 58 yrs
Climate Characteristics: Tabora, Tanzania appears to have a rainy season and a dry season. According to
the tables, the area only received one millimeter of precipitation throughout June, July, and August. This
is also when the area is the coldest, as seen in the minimum and maximum tables or graphs.
Anthrome: Many people in this area depend on agriculture, mainly small tobacco farms. There is also a
ballast quarry in the area. According to my climate station anthrome map, this area is surrounded by
mostly residential rainfed mosaic, but also has dense settlements, residential irrigated cropland, and
residential rangelands.
Kppen Climate Classification: This region is considered a dry tropical climate. (Aw).

Location: Burdekin Shire Council, Australia

Latitude/longitude: (-19.578, 147.4075)
Elevation: 10.7 meters
Years on record: 123 yrs
Climate Characteristics: Burdekin Shire Council seems to have a summer, fall, winter, and spring.
However, the temperatures dont seem to get too cold in the winter. On the other hand, the summers
seem to get quite hot at times. It usually rains the most in December, January, February, and March. It
hardly rains for the rest of the year. A tourist site for the town said, Come enjoy 300 days of sunshine a
year! However, there have been a few extremes. For example, on January 7th, 1890, they received
2090mm of rain in one day. Then in July of 1891, there was not a single drop of rain.
Anthrome: The Shire of Burdekin is a community surrounded by open fields and farmland. It is the
biggest sugar cane producer in Australia. They are able to grow a number of crops because the climate is
favorable and they are also located right along the Burdekin delta, which provides fertile soils and
irrigation water. The communitys economy is steadily growing, and they have a downtown retail,
entertainment, and arts district. According to my climate station anthrome map, this area is surrounded
by residential irrigated cropland, populated irrigated cropland, residential rainfed mosaic, and
residential rangelands.
Kppen Climate Classification: This location is considered a dry tropical climate. (Aw)
