Fumbling Toward Ecstasy

Couple-Sonny & Alexis

Prologue:

He stayed away so long because she asked him to. She said she need time to think. To sort out her feelings, and that he should do the same. Especially in light of
their present situation. But, as he watched her sitting on the park bench, alone, trying to hide her sadness, he knew he couldn’t stay away. Besides, he knew she
needed him, even if she wouldn’t admit it. Though she might deny it, part of her belonged to him, and him to her. The woman he loved.

He walked slowly toward the bench she occupied, and as he approached her, he could see her rubbing her swollen stomach and mumbling softly. She was talking to
her unborn baby. His unborn baby. The unborn baby she, at first, wasn’t sure she wanted to keep. He felt the dagger in his heart twist a little more, but
swallowed the pain.

He felt a small tug on his hand and looked down at his adopted son, Michael. The spitting image of his grandmother; he had a huge smile on his face, that melted
his heart. “Daddy, there’s Miss Davis.” He said cheerily. He nodded his agreement, while trying to hide the sentiment that began to cloud his eyes. “Can we go say
hi? Last time, she let me feel the baby kick.” Sonny smiled at his son. The light in his eyes was a far cry from the darkness in his own. He felt content that his
world was not affecting his son. He could only hope it would stay that way. And for the baby Alexis was about to have.

“Yeah, we can go say hi, buddy, if that’s what you want.” replied Sonny.

As soon as he did, he let go of Michael’s hand and watched him race to Alexis’ side. She was startled at first, not sure where the little boy had come from. His
heart melted as he watched them hug a little. Michael always admired Alexis. Sonny suspected it was because of the candy she would sneak him while he wasn’t
looking. She would bring him toys, candy, his favorite books. Sonny knew, without a doubt, that she would be an excellent mother to their child.

As Sonny sat down on the bench next to her, he tried hard to keep his gaze placid. He didn’t want the emotions he knew she could easily read, to frighten her.
She said she needed time and that was what he was determined to give her. He smiled at Michael, who had his ear pressed to Alexis’ swollen stomach. The light
that danced in Alexis’ eyes expressed the joy she felt inside. Pregnancy agreed with her. She had a light that he had never seen before.

“Daddy, I felt the baby!” chattered Michael, happily.

Sonny smiled brightly. “That’s great, buddy. Soon, you’ll have a little brother or sister to play with.” That made Michael smile. Sonny glanced over to Alexis and
found her eyeing him with peculiarity. “Hey, um, buddy, why don’t you go over on the play set and give me and Alexis a chance to talk?” Michael got up and headed
for the play set. “Stay where I can see you, Michael.” Sonny called to him.

He leaned back against the bench, as Alexis did the same. Both their heads and eyes were facing front. Sonny, slyly, let his hand fall to the space on the bench
between them, finding hers. He grabbed her hand, and to his surprise, she didn’t pull away.

“So, how are you?” he asked, softly.

“Your daughter and I are fine.”

Pride soared through him. “We’re having a little girl?”

“Doctor Meadows confirmed it today. I have a sonogram picture for you.” She pulled it out of her pocket with her free hand and handed it to him. She looked over
at him as he stared at the picture. The tears the spilled down his cheeks broke her heart. She loved this man, with all of her heart. But things between them
have been rocky. “I was thinking of names for her. I was thinking of naming her Adella after your mother.”

“Or Kristin after yours.”

“Yeah. Kristina’s bought every baby book known to man. I think she’s more excited about this baby than we are.” She gave a small laugh that died softly on the air.
She removed her hand from his to wipe the tears that started to fall from her eyes. “How’s Carly?”

Sonny sighed pensively. “No change. The doctors. . .say she may never regain her memory. So. . .”

“So she still thinks you’re happily married.” responded Alexis. She felt like the wind had been knocked out of her. When Sonny went to grab her hand again, she
moved her hand quickly. “It’s okay, Sonny. We. . .never made promises to each other. We. . .”

“Don’t do that.” He told her. “Don’t shut me out again, Alexis. I. . .”

“I’m not trying to shut you out.” She assured him. “We’re having a baby and we’ll. . .be connected forever. But. . .I’m just trying to protect us from. . .”

“You don’t have to worry about Carly.”

“Sonny, she purposely drove her car over a bluff into freezing cold water. She is unstable, even the doctor’s agree. She could. . .”

“She would never. . .never. . .hurt you, me, or our baby.” He looked at her with such reverence, that if they were talking about anyone but Carly, she might actually
believe him. But even Sonny choked on those words.

“There is no guarantee. You don’t know what she’d do. And as much as I care for you, and want you to be in my life, I will not feel safe exploring whatever is
between us, until Carly is no longer a factor.”

“She isn’t one now.”

“Yes, Sonny, she is. She’s the biggest priority you have right now. She’s your wife, she’s incapacitated, and she needs you. That is what you have to deal with right
now. The baby and I will be fine.” Alexis stood to leave and Sonny quickly grabbed her hand, holding her in place. “Let go.”

“I can’t.” He couldn’t bring himself to look her in the eyes. “I’m afraid that if I go and help her, that once she does regain her memory, she’ll prolong the divorce.
And that once I’m finally free, you’ll be gone. I can’t. . .I can’t lose you. . .Alexis. You, the baby and Michael mean everythin’ to me. You’re. . .you’re my world.”

Despite herself, Alexis turned to face him. She placed his hands on her swollen stomach, while placing on of her hands on his face. “I’m not going anywhere.” She
bent down to kiss his cheek before leaving him.

As Sonny watched her leave, he felt his heart being torn in half. They loved each other, wanted to be together, but fate always stepped in. This time it was Carly.
Only time would tell who would step in next. But, as he watched her frame fade into the distance, he vowed that no matter what, he wouldn’t give up.

Chapter One - Dark Side of the Moon:

By the time she reached her penthouse, the tears were flowing more steadily. She had been crying since she left Sonny in the park. She knew her walking away
would hurt him, but it hurt her just as much. But she had to keep her distance. They were caught in the middle of a storm that could change its course at any
given moment. Stepping off the elevator, her mind conjured up her greatest fear. That even if Carly didn’t regain her memory, that her constant need for Sonny
would pull him back in. That they would somehow rekindle whatever connection brought them together in the first place. . .and she would be left in the cold.

She tried to stop the flow of tears before going inside, just in case her sister was there. She wasn’t entirely sure Kristina would believe that it was the hormones
that made her cry like this. She fumbled around inside her purse for her door key and dropped it, spilling all its contents. Cursing to herself, she bent down to
pick them up as best she could.

“Let me help, Miss Davis.” Johnny O’Brien, Sonny’s loyal bodyguard, and head of security, said coming from the crevice between Sonny’s door and the elevator.
Alexis grabbed his hand to pull herself up and gave him a gratifying smile. “Thank you, Johnny. If I had gotten any lower, I might not have been able to get up.”

Her smile grew as she rubbed her stomach. “The little one tends to get in the way.”

Johnny smiled as he handed her the purse. “Is everything okay?”

“Yes, we’re fine, thank you.” Johnny nodded and headed to open the door for her. “Um, I know she’s not on your detail, but is my sister in?”

“No, she went to L&B. Frank’s with her.”

“Okay, thanks.” She walked past him through the door he held open for her.

“Anything else you need?”

“No,” She shook her head. “No, I’m fine. Just going to catch up on some work.”

“Have a good night.” With a smile, he handed her the key and closed her door softly.

Alexis dropped her keys and purse on the desk, draped her jacket over the chair, and made a beeline for the couch. She immediately felt some of the tension
leave her body. But she couldn’t get the image of Sonny out of her mind. He cried when she handed him the first real picture of their baby. She can recollect
earlier how she wanted him in the room with her. She wanted him there to share the experience, to hold her hand, to listen to their baby’s heartbeat. She wanted
all the things for her daughter, that she and her sister never had. Two loving parents who would be a part of their life. Her mother died when she was so young,
and her father never thought of her as anything but indiscretion. Alexis wanted better for her child.

Just as the tears began to flow, her front door opened and her younger sister, Kristina walked in. She tried to quickly mask the foul mood that had fallen. “Hi.”
greeted Alexis. “I thought you were at L&B?”

“We wrapped early.” answered Kristina, who had been smiling when she noticed Alexis was home, but discovering the mood her sister was in, was now worried. “Are
you okay?”

“Yeah,” Alexis flashed her a fake smile. “I’m fine.”

“How’d it go at the doctor?” Asked Kristina as she walked toward Alexis and sat on the coffee table in front of her.

“Everything’s fine.” She flashed the fake smile again and rubbed her abdomen. “You’re going to have a niece in about four months. Dr. Meadows said that
everything is progressing normally. She would like me to rest more, though.”

Kristina nodded, obviously not buying the fake smiles her sister was throwing her way. She smiled softly. “A girl?” She reached for Alexis’ hands. “That’s so
great. I know Sonny must be stoked.”

Alexis smiled again, only this time the smile was sad. The tears began to cloud her eyes and the pain returned to her heart. “Yeah,” She fought back the tears.
“He is. He’s very excited.”
Kristina cocked her head to the side to stare at Alexis properly. “Is Sonny the reason for this mood?”

“What mood?”

“The incredibly woeful one you’re in.” Kristina pointed out. “The smiles didn’t fool me, and don’t say it’s the hormones. I know you. You look like you’re suffering.”
She squeezed Alexis’ hands. “What’s going on?”
“I just. . .never. . .saw this coming. I never thought I’d be a mother. And if I did, I never thought I’d be pregnant by a married man. Whose wife is. . .” She closed
her eyes and bit back the seething anger she felt towards Carly. “I just wanted better for my child.” She let out a pensive sigh, that only Kristina and Sonny would
notice. “I just didn’t want my child to grow up the way you and I did.”

“She won’t.” assured Kristina. “Sonny is going to be a part of her life. He loves her, he loves you.”

“He’s married.” replied Alexis. “Sure he was in the process of a divorce, but that is all blown to hell now that Carly is an amnesiac. She’s incapacitated; the doctors
can’t say that she’ll ever regain her memory or that the physical therapy will get her to walk again. She’s this huge priority in Sonny’s life right now and. . .” She
rubbed her abdomen again.

“And that doesn’t mean that this won’t work out for you. Sonny loves you and wants nothing more than to be a family with you and the baby. Carly's condition
doesn’t change that. So, what’s going on?”

“I’m afraid, Kristina.” admitted Alexis. A tear spilled from its stronghold and streaked down her flushed cheeks. “They fell in love the first time because Carly
needed him. They were dealing with the loss of their unborn baby. . .and that was a connection that created what they shared. I’m afraid that it will happen again.”

“Alexis,” Kristina sighed and moved closer. “I don’t know anything about Sonny’s relationship with Carly, and I really don’t care. What I do know, is that he loves
you. And the love he feels for you didn’t come from loss or hatred. It came from mutual friendship, caring and understanding. I can’t even begin to understand
the relationship you and Sonny have. I can’t even comprehend the profound connection that the two of you share. You two know what the other feels or is thinking
without a word spoken. I’ve seen one look from you bring the light back into his eyes. I’ve seen the tension lift from your face the moment he enters the room.
That. . .cannot be broken. Or replaced. So, whatever broken path you two are on right now, I’m not worried about and you shouldn’t be either.”

“Why not?”

“Because you two always find your way back to each other.” Kristina breathed a sigh of relief as Alexis smiled. She was happy to see the foul mood was leaving.
“Feel better?”

“Yeah.” answered Alexis as she moved to hug her sister. “Thank you. I feel much better.”

And for the moment, she really did.

Chapter Two - Eremitic:

Sonny sat silently in the back of his limousine staring out the window. Michael was on the other side of the backseat staring out the window as well. He glanced
over and looked at his son and smiled. It never ceased to amaze him how quickly he had fallen in love with the little boy. The little boy who should have never been
his. Melancholy had befallen him from his conversation with Alexis earlier. In fact, her pregnancy has caused him to think strange thoughts. Thoughts of what he
did to A.J. to acquire Michael as his own. Things he was not proud of doing. Things he would have to tell Michael one day. He would have to tell his beloved son one
day . . . that he stole him from his true family.

Sonny also couldn’t help but think how he would feel if someone had done that to him? What if someone convinced Alexis - though she didn’t need much help - that
his life was too dangerous for their child? What if they convinced Alexis to cut him out of their daughter’s life before she even got a chance to know him? Would
he feel the way A.J. felt? Would he feel worse?

When he heard Michael calling his name, he pushed the thoughts aside. “Daddy, does Mom remember me?”

“Of course.”

“But you and Uncle Jason said that she has a problem that makes her forget things.”

“She does. It’s called Amnesia. Part of her mind is blocked and she can’t remember anything. But the part that isn’t, she remembers you.” With a smile, he
reached over and rubbed a hand through his son’s red hair. “You excited to see her?”

“Yeah, I have to tell her about school and all the cool things I learned.”

Sonny smiled. “She’d like that.”

“I also have to tell her about the telescope Miss Davis got me.” A curious thought then struck Michael. “I could tell her that I felt the baby kick.”

“Buddy, I don’t think now would be the time to tell your Mom that. It might upset her.”

“Why?”

Sonny smiled and exhaled sharply. “Because she doesn’t remember everything that happened and she might think it’s a bad thing. It could really upset her, okay?
And we don’t want that.”

“No, I don’t want to make her sad.” replied Michael as she shook his head. “I won’t say anything.”

“Thanks, Buddy.”

Sonny returned to staring out the window. He dodged a bullet there. Telling Carly about Alexis’ pregnancy right now might set her off, and he wasn’t sure what
that would mean for her recovery. And the sooner she recovered, the sooner he and Alexis could be together. His hand instinctively went over his right chest
pocket, where he held the sonogram picture. He closed his eyes and remembered Alexis sitting in the park alone. It hurt him deep inside to watch her walk away
from him. But he was sure it hurt her more. She didn’t want this. Not for her child. She wanted better, so as much as it killed him, he let her go.

He pushed the image of her out of his mind as the limousine pulled into the underground parking lot of General Hospital. He has been there every week on the
same day for the past month to see his estranged wife. To bring Michael to see his mom, whom he surely missed. Sonny’s mind instantly took him back five months
as he stepped out of the car and headed for the elevator with Michael. It was two nights after his first time with Alexis. They were sitting in his living room,
talking, when the news report about Carly’s car going over the bluff into freezing cold waters came on. A two-week search of the lake ensued, no body was found.
No one knew what happened, but everyone assumed she had died. Though it was hard at first, the initial adjustments were being made. Sonny made sure Michael
was taken care of. He did what he could for Bobbie. And around this time, Alexis discovered her pregnancy. It wasn’t until three months later that it was
revealed Carly was indeed alive. She had been rescued from the water by a fishing boat and taken to a small town for medical treatment. Crashing the car against
the frozen waters caused damage internally as well as placed her in a coma. Months of lying still and the internal damage brought on paralysis in her lower limbs.
And when she came to, all she remembered was that she was Mrs. Sonny Corinthos.

The rest is history. Jason went to confirm that it was her and brought her home. She’s undergone intense physical therapy to regain the strength in her legs. Due
to the trauma of the situation she’s received psychiatric help. And according to the doctors, her memory would have to come back on its own . . . if it came back at
all. Needless to say, this entire situation has put a strain on his relationship with Alexis. And part of that is his fault. He’s never properly reassured Alexis of her
place in his life, but at this point, he felt he shouldn’t have to. She should know by now she means everything to him.

They stepped off the elevator on Carly’s floor and Michael raced down the corridor when he noticed Jason. He stopped in front of the man and hugged him around
the waist. Sonny walked up behind and nodded when Michael asked could he go in. He needed to talk to Jason.

“How is she?” asked Sonny, as he looked through the glass and saw Michael hug his mother.

“Wondering when she’ll get to go home.”

“The renovation of the cottage is almost complete.”

“She’s going to wonder why she’s not going to the Penthouse with you.” Sonny nodded, his mind wrapping around the thought of how Alexis would take that. “Sonny,
you just need to tell her the truth. Prolonging it will just make it worse in the end.”

“She’s not stable enough, Jason. She might . . . ”

“She can’t hurt Alexis.”

“I’m worried about her hurtin’ herself.”

“What do you mean?”

“She drove her car over the bluff because she saw me and Alexis in bed together. She did that purposely. What would she do now . . . in an already vulnerable
state . . . if she found out that Alexis and I are havin’ a baby?”

“She’s going to find out sooner or later.”

“I know . . . but not now. Not until she’s strong enough to handle it. If something . . . happened to her again . . . it would crush Michael and Bobbie.”

Jason nodded. “How’s Alexis?”

“Fine. Everythin’ is fine. She’s havin’ a girl.” Sonny smiled softly. “I better get in there. Drop by the penthouse tonight . . . there’s somethin’ we need to talk
about.”

“Okay.” Jason nodded and walked inside with Sonny.

“Daddy, Mom said she can wiggle her toes now.” Michael exclaimed to his father.

Sonny smiled and noticed how Carly watched him. It took him a moment to realize that this was the woman he hurt his best friend for. This was the woman he
convinced himself he loved. But as he stared at her, he thought he saw something different in her eyes. Something about her has changed.

“Say, Buddy, why don’t you come with me to the cafeteria and we’ll get some ice cream?” asked Jason. Michael hopped down from the bed, told his mother he’d be
right back, and left with Jason. Leaving Sonny and Carly alone in silence.

“How are you?” He asked.

“Better. You?”

“I’m okay.” This felt weird to him. It always did when he came to visit. He didn’t know what to say to her. He didn’t touch her, kiss her, or anything a husband
would do, and he knew she wondered why. “So the renovations are almost done, you can go home soon. That’s got to feel good.”

“Yeah, to be able to sleep in my own bed. Be in my own home with you and Michael, that’s what keeps me driving.” She smiled to Sonny with tears in her eyes. “You
have no idea what it means to me to have you and Michael and Jason in my corner. To be able to come home to you guys . . . its what I wake up in the morning for.”
She laughed softly. “I’d have no reason to live anymore if I didn’t have you.”

Though he hid it well, Sonny felt a sharp pain course through him. In his mind he heard the sounds of steel bars being slammed. He was in prison right now. And
he had no way of breaking free.
Chapter Three - Together As One in Stolen Moments

Their eyes met and both instantly felt a small amount of relief. Sonny gave Alexis a pleased smile when he walked into his penthouse and found her there. He
watched her rise gracefully from the couch and turn to face him. She looked better than the last time he saw her. The color had returned to her cheeks and the
light to her eyes. And seeing her, immediately made his world better.
“Hi.” He greeted her. “What are you doin’ here?”

“I was waiting for you.”

He moved closer to her, not able to gauge her tone of voice. “Is everythin’ all right? Is the baby okay?”

“The baby’s fine. We’re - we’re fine.” She held up her hands to get him to calm down. She saw his jaw muscles relax and went on to explain why she was there so
late. “I came by to apologize for walking away from you earlier.”

“You hurt.” He shrugged it off. He tossed his keys on the desk next to the door, took off his jacket and draped it across the chair. “You needed time . . . so I let
you go.”

Alexis nodded and smiled softly. “I was hurt. I . . . am hurting. But . . . so are you. And I know my walking away from you didn’t help matters.”

“It hurt you, too.” He stepped closer to her. Time to play their game. Whenever in the past five months if they fought, or didn’t see eye to eye, they would stand
a few feet apart, both say what they needed to say, while taking a step closer to the other; until they met in the middle. It was their way of finding common
ground. “I’m not gonna ask you to give me more than you’re willin’, Alexis. You know that.”

“I do know that and I appreciate it.” She stepped closer. “But the past month has been very hard and I should have been there for you because if nothing else, we
are friends.”

“Best friends.” He corrected and stepped closer. Very little space was between them now. Her last step would close the gap. “But you have a baby to think of now.
You have to do what’s right for you and the baby.”

“Being there for you is what’s right for me and the baby.” She stepped closer and cradled his face in her hands. Sonny instinctively placed one hand on her waist
and the other on her swollen abdomen. “You mean a great deal to me and are a permanent fixture in my life. This is the relationship I wanted and when things got
a little tough, I chickened out. But I’m over that now. I’m with you . . . ”

Sonny leaned forward and kissed her lips softly, feeling her body react to the kiss. He moved forward slightly and wrapped her in an embrace. “Why the change
of heart?”

“Because someone pointed out that we’ve been on a broken road before and things looked bleak . . . but we always found our way back to each other. I forgot that
and needed to be reminded.”

Sonny kissed her again, deeper this time. Brushing a strand of hair out of her face, he smiled. “Remind me to thank Kristina. And she’s right. We’ll get through
this somehow.”

Alexis nodded as they parted. “Right, but tonight, I don’t want to think about Carly, business or anything.”

Sonny smiled, obviously pleased with that. “What do you want to do then?”

“I want to sit on this couch, eat whatever healthy food you push on me, watch old movies, and fall asleep in your arms listening to your heartbeat.”

Sonny smiled brightly. “That can be arranged.”

---

Twenty minutes and a gourmet dinner later, Sonny and Alexis lay on his couch watching Casablanca. Sonny lay on his side, his back against the cushions, while
Alexis lay on her side in front of him with his hand draped over her waist. They were both covered with a small blanket and wondering how they were fitting
comfortably on that sofa, considering Alexis’ condition. Though, truthfully, it didn’t matter to either of them. They enjoyed the closeness.

Alexis, who was deeply into the movie, shook her head as best she could when Sonny offered her an apple slice. He had been trying to get her to eat healthier
since she became pregnant and was ecstatic when she agreed to eat whatever healthy food he prepared. But, it seems that moment has passed.

He took the opportunity to fiddle with her hair and placed a soft kiss on her neck. He lived for moments like these. Just the two of them, no one to bother them,
no huge ordeal to deal with, just them enjoying being together.

“That’s love.” Alexis said in a low whisper, partly because she was crying from the movie and partly because of Sonny continuing to kiss her.

“What is?”

“The way he just helped her and then let her go.” answered Alexis, bringing her hand to run through his tousled hair. “He wanted her and he let her go.”

“Yeah.” said Sonny absentmindedly as he maneuvered her body closer to his.

“Reminds me of you.”

He chuckled softly, not sure if it were a compliment. “How so?” Alexis moved silently with him as he positioned his body over hers. She was looking up into his
dark, smoldering gaze and nearly lost her thought. He lowered his lips to hers briefly. Smiled again when her eyes grew hazy and lingered on his lips. “How so?”
“Oh,” she shook her head to clear it. “Because you cared for me enough to let me walk away from you.”

“Yeah, but I knew you weren’t goin’ to leave me the way she left him. There’s no other man in your life.” When she smiled, “Unless there’s somethin’ you’re
neglectin’ to tell me?”
She laughed when he tickled her on her side. “No, there’s no other man. Except for Michael, Jason, and the bodyguard of the day.”

“Good answer.” he complimented her.

“I am a lawyer.”

“You’re also very beautiful.” He leaned down and seized her mouth with his own. “You’re the most amazin’ woman I have ever met.”

“According to you, a revelation once I got out of those ‘lawyer clothes’.” She laughed.

“And you didn’t disappoint.”

“I’m sorry for earlier. I never meant to hurt you.” She ran her hands through his hair again.

“I know. Part of that was my fault. I never reassured you of your place in my life after Carly came back. I thought you knew, but I should have still told you.”

“My place in your life?” She hitched an eyebrow. “What place is that?”

“The love of my life. The woman in my life. The mother of my daughter. My best friend. The list goes on and on.”

“Wow, I have a lot of places.” She leaned up and kissed him. “Thank you.”

Sonny winked at her and maneuvered their bodies back to their previous positions. He was content to stay this way with her all night. Because, for the moment,
they were happy. They were together. And nothing could touch them.
