LATERAL

The 2009 NEESWood Capstone test was the largest full-scale earthquake test in history. It featured a six-storey, 40' x 60' condominium tower of wood-frame construction that was outfitted with SimpsonStrongTie lateral systems products and subjected to ground motions equivalent to a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. Capstone validated previous tests supporting the British Columbia building code revision that increased the maximum height of mid-rise, wooden residential construction from four to six storeys. British Columbia supplied the more than 100 tons of lumber used to construct the building.

Anchor Tiedown System

Optimal ATS for Canada

Introducing the Optimal Anchor Tiedown System For British Columbia*
On April 6, 2009, the British Columbia Building Code was revised to permit the construction of six-storey residential buildings from wood. This code change, and the subsequent construction of every six storey residential structure built with wood in Canada, is in part a result of the full scale NEESWood Capstone tests performed on the worlds largest shake table in Miki, Japan. The NEESWood Capstone testing subjected a full scale, six storey, wood framed residential building to ground motions roughly equivalent to a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The structure was built using SimpsonStrongTie Anchor Tiedown System (ATS) as the primary overturning restraint. It withstood the simulation and was structurally intact after the test. The NEESWood Capstone test program was led by Colorado State University in cooperation with Simpson Strong-Tie. Major funding was provided by the National Science Foundation (U.S.), the government of British Columbia, the government of Japan, the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory and FP Innovations. This testing program validated the belief that six-storey wood buildings can, indeed, be built economically to withstand large seismic events. As the recognized leader in holdown technology and cutting-edge engineering concepts, SimpsonStrongTie introduces the Optimal ATS, a combination of ATS components selected to most economically satisfy the demand loads and performance requirements of the structure designed under the more stringent design requirements, including seismic and shrinkage criteria, of the revised building code. Similar to the system used in the Capstone test, Optimal ATS is designed to meet the performance needs of mid-rise structures. Moreover, our unparalleled engineering and field support from design through product installation continues to foster the peace of mind Designers have come to expect from SimpsonStrongTie.
*Five- and six-storey systems are applicable only to jurisdictions with a building code allowance for mid-rise, wood-frame construction. Currently, other provinces are reviewing the British Columbia Building Code change and the NEESWood Capstone testing results with an eye toward modifying their own codes. One- to four-storey systems comply with the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC).

Anchor Tiedown System

Skipped floors
Do all floors need to be tied off?
There are several continuous tiedown systems available that offer solutions to resist the high overturning forces inherent in multi-storey, light-frame structures. Typically these systems fall into one of two categories: those that call for every floor to be tied off and those where floors are skipped. A skipped-floor system restrains two or more floors with a single restraint point to provide overturning resistance. An all-floors-tied-off system differs in that it establishes overturning restraint at every floor. Although a skipped-floor system and an all-floors-tied-off system initially appear to be similar, there are some significant differences in load path and performance that could potentially compromise the integrity of a structure. Skipping floors is not recommended, and familiarization with potential issues is strongly encouraged when choosing a tiedown system. DRIFT A skipped-floors system that is properly designed to resist demand loads may not be sufficient to satisfy drift requirements. Test results indicate that skipping floors has the potential to substantially increase interstorey drift. Even if drift analysis is not required in you area, it is a critical element to multi-storey design. REDUNDANCY Even when appropriately designed, structural elements can perform unexpectedly during major seismic and high wind events. In a skipped-floor system, multiple floors rely on a single component for their performance. If that element fails, the entire uplift resistance for all nonrestrained floors below may be compromised. However, with an all-floors-tied-off system, the lower floors do not rely on the stability of the upper floors for their performance. SHRINKAGE In tiedown systems, wood shrinkage creates gaps at the restraint points. When a floor does not have a restraint, this gap will transfer up to the next restraint point, resulting in a larger space between the nut and bearing plate. This additional space will result in increased horizontal drift. In addition, it is recommended that shrinkage is compensated for at every level. CONSTRUCTION STABILITY A functioning shearwall needs to have holdowns installed to properly perform. A system where all floors are tied off requires no additional shoring or bracing during construction because the structure is restrained at each level once the system is installed. In a skipped-floor system, the designer or builder may want to consider requiring a temporary bracing method during construction until the skipped-floor system is completely installed. This temporary bracing can help prevent collapse or any damage that might occur during a seismic or wind event. In a tied-off system, all holdowns are installed as the structure is built, ensuring that the shearwalls will perform as designed if an event occurs during construction.
C-ATSCAN11 2011 simpson strong-tie COMPANY INC.

Issues to consider with skipped floor systems:

INCREASE IN COMPONENT SIZES In a skipped-floor system, the overturning forces transfer up the building until a restraint is reached. As a result, all elements at the restrained point have to resist uplift forces for any non-restrained stories below. This results in increased lumber, threaded rod, and bearing plate sizes. In a tied-off system, the incremental uplift at each level is transferred directly into the tiedown system at that level.

Sources of Deflection in continuous tiedown systems at rod termination

1. Rod elongation occurs between floor restraints. 2. Wood crushing occurs at the points where the bearing plate bears onto the wood plates, and where the wood plates bear onto the compression members. 3. Wood bending occurs between the compression members. The deflection increases as the distance between the supports is increased. 4. Bending of the steel plate. 5. Movement can occur when the nuts are not correctly tightened. 6. Wood shrinkage can occur, creating a space between the steel plate and the nut. Shrinkage may be significantly increased when the system terminates at a bridge block rather than double top plates. 7. Rod elongation, wood crushing, wood bending, steel-plate bending, nut movement, and wood shrinkage will occur at floor levels also, and should be considered. Top Plate

Ctud Coupling Take-Up Device

The CTUD is a combination coupler nut and take-up device. It compensates for the slack that develops in the system due to the shrinkage of wood members. It will accommodate up to 1" of movement and is available in standard and reducing sizes for 58", 34", 78", 1" and 118" diameter Strong-Rod threaded rod or other threaded rod. IMPORTANT: Do not remove the activation pin until the isolator nut is installed at the level above. Design of the CTUD eliminates parts and simplifies installation. Easy installation saves time, resulting in a lower installed cost. Witness Holes allow for easy inspection to verify proper thread engagement. The positive stop at each end ensures that the rod is threaded to the proper depth. Installation: Remove shrink wrap from CTUD Thread the specified CTUD (wider end up) onto the embedded anchor (in first-floor applications) or the Strong-Rod threaded rod from the level below. Position so that the activation pin faces out for easy access. Thread the Strong-Rod threaded rod from the level above into the CTUD. The CTUD is correctly installed when the anchor or threaded rod is visible through both witness holes. Secure Strong-Rod threaded rod at the level above with specified bearing plate and Isolator Nut. Attach Isolator Nut to sill plate above with #8 x 3" screw (included). Continue system installation at each level until the run is complete. Remove activation pin after level above is secured with Isolator Nut and prior to covering. Naming Scheme:

Isolator Nut
Isolator nuts isolate the wood shrinkage to each level within the ATS system. This segmenting of the movement ensures consistent performance. The isolator nut consists of a heavy hex nut connected to a slotted washer, and is fastened with one screw driven through the slotted washer and bearing plate into the bottom plate. Isolator nuts are required on the bottom plate of the floor(s) above a level where a CTUD is used. Finish: Nut none; Washer Zinc plated Installation: Thread the isolator nut onto the Strong-Rod threaded rod from the level below until it is snug with the bearing plate, and tighten an additional turn. Align one of the slots in the washer with the smaller hole in the bearing plate so that a screw can pass through both. Drive #8 x 3" screw (provided) through the washer and bearing plate into the bottom plate. A minimum 1 of 1 8" of penetration into the bottom plate is required.

Design Example
DESIGN NOTES
The following is an example of how ATS is selected and designed. The Designer shall determine the cumulative overturning tension and compression forces at each floor. The ATS components (Strong-Rod threaded rod and bearing plates) are selected on the basis of the factored tension forces. The Designer should then select the lumber at the ends of the shearwall on the basis of the factored forces. Note that the compression forces are typically greater than the tension forces due to combinations of additional forces such as dead and live load. SimpsonStrongTie Anchor Tiedown System component capacities are selected to meet or exceed the design forces provided and determined by the Designer. SimpsonStrongTie has not confirmed and is not responsible for any of the design, engineering, calculations or derivation of the structural forces related to the building. The Designer is responsible for evaluating the effects of lumber shrinkage and ATS elongation on shearwall drift. SimpsonStrongTie has not confirmed and is not responsible for verifying the shearwall systems adherence to building code drift requirements or its performance in consideration of structural deformation compatibility. For simplicity of the design and installation, it is recommended that the Designer group similar runs together. Given: NBCC 2010 Wall geometry and shear forces are shown in Figure 1 below Douglas Fir-Larch wall plates 4" Nominal wall thickness 12" Floor thickness

STEP 1: Determine the cumulative overturning and incremental forces based on the applied storey shear:
The moment arm is the distance between the centerline of compression members and centerline of tension members. This is typically the distance between tension rods on each end of the shearwall. For tension loads, gravity loads have not been included. T1 = Cumulative OT Tension L1 = [15(9) + 12.5(6) + 3(10)] 3.66 = 65.57kN T2 = Cumulative OT Tension L2 = [15(6) + 12.5(3)] 3.66 = 34.84kN T3 = Cumulative OT Tension L3 = [15(3)] 3.66 = 12.30kN

STEP 4: The Solution Use CTDS3-7/8 with the compression members listed in STEP 3. Take-Up Devices
Two types of take-up devices are offered for the Simpson Strong-Tie Anchor Tiedown System: the TUD (or ATUD) take-up device, and the CTUD coupling take-up device. The TUD is the more economical solution and should be used when possible. The TUD and CTUD work differently. The TUD sits on top of a bearing plate and expands to compensate for the level below. Because the rod passes through the device and cannot shrink with the structure, any shrinkage that occurs at that level accumulates to the level above. See Figure 3. The CTUD is a coupling device which connects the two rods together and compensates for shrinkage at the level above it. Because the CTUD contracts as the level above shrinks, it allows the rod to move down with the floor. Therefore, any shrinkage that occurs at that level does not accumulate to the next level. See Figure 4. This catalogue uses the optimal Anchor Tiedown System where a combination of TUD and CTUD take-up devices are used. Selection of take-up devices is not required if the Designer uses one of the standard systems listed on pages 19 through 37.

Compression Members: General Notes

1. Studs, posts and blocking details are specified by the Designer and are not shipped with the Anchor Tiedown System. 2. With the Anchor Tiedown System, it is not necessary to design the lumber in tension. See the Compression Member Selection Tables on page 40 for compression member factored resistances and additional design assumptions. 3. The compression capacity of the lumber listed in the tables is based on CSA O86-09 for the plate heights, wall plate and compression member species specified. 4. Wall plates and stud species are assumed to be the same as specified in the Compression Member Selection Tables (unless noted otherwise). The Designer must review the compression members for variation of species, or unsupported heights other than those listed in the tables. 5. Factored perpendicular to grain resistances assume fcp = 812 psi for D.Fir-L and 615 psi for S-P-F. Values shown in the tables have been multiplied by KD, KB and KZCP where applicable 6. Effective length of lumber (le) equal to plate height, 1 less (3) 2x wall plates (i.e. 4 2"). 7. Capacities shown, assume Ke = 1.0.
