Course Description: EXMS 242 (3cr) is designed to explore the psychological effects and implications of participation
in sport and exercise. Emphasis and overviews of personality and behavioral dynamics of sport, the psychological changes associated with exercise, assessment in sport psychology, performance enhancement, motivation, anxiety, group processes, and psychological factors regarding sport and exercise adoption, maintenance, and enjoyment of sport and exercise will be explored. Pre requisite: PSYC 001 Course Policies: This course is delivered online. For many students, this may be the first, or among the first experiences with an entirely online learning environment. There are several critical policies for this type of learning environment: 1) 2) 3) 4) The student must operate independently and be disciplined with regard to course progress. The student must plan to check in online at least once daily to stay up to date with announcements, updates, etc. Readings and other support activities (i.e., video clips, etc) are critical to course progress and student success. Grading includes both graded assignments, as well as participation credit (discussion boards, etc). Participation in online interactions must be conducted in a respectful, professional, and ethical manner. No disrespectful comments or interactions will be tolerated, and may result in the lowering of grades, or failure of the course. Academic integrity is paramount. In online learning, we all make sacrifices with regards to control of the learning environment. In online coursework, there is a very high level of student independence. Technology: All students are required to have regular (daily) computer access, and must have access to high speed internet connectivity throughout the course. Objectives & Outcomes : At the end of this course, the student should be able to: Explore information regarding psychological theories and application to sport and exercise. Explore psychological factors related to exercise, adoption, maintenance, and motivation in sport. Explore research and theory on goal setting, PST, and other applied topics in sport psychology. Explore current research in the field and apply it to their individual areas of the allied health arena
The final grade is determined by the total number of points accumulated on the various course assignments. Out of fairness, grades will not be rounded, though I will be fair and reasonable. The grading scale is as follows:

Discussion board: For each module, there is a discussion board worth 10 pts. For these posts, I am grading using a rubric that is looking for depth of thought, connection of your discussion to course materials, and thorough discussion of the topic/question. You should also comment meaningfully on at least two of your peers' discussion board posts in each module to get full credit for the discussion board each week. Each week, discussion board posts, and peer comments are due: by 5:00 PM on last day of Module. Case Study Responses: For modules 2-4, there is a case study due each week, worth 20 points each. For each, you are to respond to the case response and any prompts with concise, but thorough, evidence based interventions. For example, you should not simply list what you would prescribe for an exercise intervention for a client with anxiety problems. You will be graded carefully on the specificity, depth, and support you give for your recommendation(s). Back up everything you can with references that include the textbook, research articles, or other legitimate, refereed resources (i.e., NOT Wikipedia etc). If you are not sure what references are credible, please feel free to communicate with me about them and I am happy to help you decide. Due: by 5:00 PM on last day of Module. Worksheets: There are two worksheet assignments worth 10 points each. These are basic worksheets designed to convey and reinforce skills and/or concepts that you would use in applied settings. These make good items to complete after, or in some cases while doing the reading for the module. If you can complete these comfortably, then you are probably ready to tackle the more applied critical application question(s), case studies etc. Due: by 5:00 PM on last day of Module. Self Assessment & Reflection: In Module 2, you will be asked to complete a psychosocial assessment that consists of a few sport psychology assessments and a content based self reflection. Details will be included with the assignment on Blackboard, but will need to be content specific and focused. In short, you will be asked to look at your scores on the assessments, and then respond to a series of prompts that ask you to reflect back on your athletic/sport past and address how those psychosocial constructs may have interacted to affect your success/failure etc. This is worth 10 points. Due: by 5:00 PM on last day of Module. Critical Application Questions: In each module, there is a critical application worth 15 points. These are specific and content focused questions where you are asked to address a particular concept or question in light of the course content. This absolutely needs to show clear connection to course concepts, theories, etc. It also should not be opinion, but be based on evidence in readings associated with the module. Due: by 5:00 PM on last day of Module.
Course Schedule The course will be delivered online, and consist of several learning modules. Dates, deadlines, assignments, and other important information for each will be available online on the course website. Dates and times are subject to change by the instructor and will be listed on the Blackboard Course Calendar.
POLICY FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES: Religious Holidays: Students have the right to practice the religion of their choice. Each semester students should submit in writing to their instructors by the end of the second full week of classes their documented religious holiday schedule for the semester. Faculty must permit students who miss work for the purpose of religious observance to make up this work. Other absences should be brought to the attention
of the instructor PRIOR to the absence whenever possible. If I receive notification and approve the absence (i.e. athletic participation, medical needs etc) the absence will not detract from your grade.
