1. Explain the concept of operating capacitance.
2. Differentiate the performance characteristics of overhead transmission line and cable
Procedure:
1. Assemble the circuit as shown in Figure 1.2.
Equipment/Apparatus:
2. Using the bridging plugs, set the secondary side voltage of the three phase transformer to
UN – 10%.
3. The connection of the bridging plugs made for this experiment means that the shortest
possible transmission is 144 km, has been selected. The characteristic feature of a line in
4. Measure the voltage between the two outer conductors at the beginning and at the end of
the line, as well as the reactive power consumed by one of the phases:

5. Change the line length to 216 km by reconnecting the bridging plugs as shown in Figure
1.3 and repeat the above measurements:

Safety Measures:
6. Change the line length to 360 km by reconnecting the bridging plugs as shown in Figure
1.4 and repeat the above measurements:

Enter the measured changing reactive power QC and the calculated ratio of U2 to U1 in a diagram as a function of the corresponding line length. What relationship can you see? Result: Compare the charging reactive power measured with that which it requires for the corresponding length according to calculation: ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ Does the transmission line model also require active power in no load operation? ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ .7.

1.To demonstrate the concept of ‘operating capacitance’.4 . assemble the following circuit: Fig.

6 .Set the voltage at three phase transformer to the value UN – 10%. remove all bridging plugs connecting the capacitance to the transmission line model. as well as the reactive power consumed by a phase: Compare the result with that for the transmission line model at a length of 100%. What conclusion can u draw regarding the equivalent capacitance? ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ Fig. Measure the voltage between the two outer conductors at the beginning and end of each line. 1.

To demonstrate the concept of ‘increased operating capacitance’. assemble the following circuit: .

The voltage increase effect at the line end is thus amplified.6 . Measure the voltage between the two outer conductors at the beginning and end of each line. 1. ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ Fig.By connecting two ‘artificial’ line capacitances. the operating capacitance of the transmission line model is doubled. as well as the reactive power consumed by a phase: Compare your results with those for a length of 100% but without additional capacitances.
