Project Title: Construction of passage ferry pier at new reclamation (contributing 65% of total coursework)

Background:

As part of the long-term transportation strategy for a new reclamation in Hong Kong, it is proposed to construct a ferry pier in Central to serve the passenger ferries linking to a new town in the New Territories. The pier is a three level reinforced concrete structure

which provides two levels of loading and unloading platforms to accommodate all types of vessels including the triple-deckers.

The pier structure occupies an area approximately 28m x 80m in plan. The southern end of the pier is located right next to the existing seawall along the north shore of the new reclamation. The proposed pier is situated between two existing ferry piers which

are required to maintain in operation at all time. After commissioning, the completed pier will be handed over back to the Government for maintenance. The general arrangements and cross sections of the pier structures together with geological section including the seawall are shown on the attached figures (Figures 1 to 8).

You are required:

(i)

To provide two alternative methods of construction (supplemented by drawings) for the foundations structures. Identify the merits and demerits for each of the option and state your preferred option giving reasons for your choice. It should be noted that piers along Grids M and N will penetrated through the rubble mound of the existing seawall. Special treatments and a monitoring system should be addressed on these foundations to ensure the stability of the seawall will not be affected by the foundation installation. (ii)

To provide two alternative methods of construction (supplemented by drawings) for the deck/floor structures. Identify the merits and demerits for each of the option and state your preferred option giving reasons for your choice. (20% of total coursework)

(iii)

To suggest two methods of corrosion protection measures to the substructure of the pier. (10% of total coursework)

(iv)

What would be the difference in estimating the construction cost for a maritime structure as compared with a conventional land structure of similar scale? How would the structural form and construction cost be affected if the

pier is located at, say 100m away from the shore line? (15% of total coursework)
