Spring is a season of rebirth for many people, who wel-
come the warm weather with open arms, especially those
who just endured a harsh winter. Spending time outdoors
whena the weather warms up is a popular pastime for many
people each spring.
Road trips taken by college kids or high schoolers hitting
the road for spring break or professionals and parents pack-
ing up the car for a weekend getaway have become synony-
mous with spring. A road trip is a great way to get outdoors
and make the most of a warm day, but there are a few tricks
of the trade drivers can employ to ensure their road trips are
as enjoyable as possible.
Give your car a good wash. Drivers who live in areas with
heavy snowfall should give their vehicles a thorough clean-
ing before hitting the road for a spring road trip. Salt and
sand can build up on a vehicle over the course of a snowy
winter, so a power washing will help remove excess salt,
sand or dirt and help the car run more smoothly.
Get the vehicle a tune-up. A tune-up, including an oil
change, should be part of your pre-trip planning. Make sure
winter hasn’t caused any damage to the vehicle’s body and
ask your mechanic to perform a thor-
ough inspection of the vehicle’s suspen-
sion and brakes. If any problems arise,
address them before embarking on your
road trip.
Subscribe to roadside assistance. Road-
side assistance programs, whether it’s
AAA or a program offered through your
insurance company, provide a measure
of security to road-trippers. Many road-
side assistance programs provide variety of emergency as-
sistance for members, including:
• towing service if your car cannot start or operate safely,
• battery service if your car’s battery needs a jump,
• fat tire service if you don’t have a spare or cannot
change the tire yourself,
• fuel delivery service if your car
runs out of gas
• lockout service if you lock your
keys in the car.
These services can act as a safety
net should an issue arise when you’re
on the road and far away from home or
far away from a service station. Keep
your membership card in your wallet
and store their customer service number
in your cellular phone should you acci-
dentally lose your membership card or
lock it inside your car.
Bring cash and credit cards. When em-
barking on a road trip, don’t assume you
will have ready access to an ATM on your trip or at your
destination. This means you may reach a point when you
have no cash on hand. While it’s a good idea to bring some
cash along on the trip, bring a credit card or cards as well
should you fnd yourself with no cash. A major credit card,
such as a Mastercard, American Express or Visa, is likely to
be accepted at most flling stations.
Invest in a road navigation system. A road navigation system
can be your best friend, helping you fnd your way in places
with which you are unfamiliar. Road navigation systems can
alert you to traffc conditions while providing directions and
alternate routes. Some systems will even alert you to nearby
flling stations, lodging or restaurants. n
A road navigation system is a good investment
for drivers about to embark on a road trip.

All prices include $99.50 processing fee, plus tax, title and licensing. Some vehicles may be sold due to advertising deadlines.
A variety of factors come into play when
a person is deciding which new or previous-
ly owned vehicle to purchase. While body
type, model year and make all are consid-
ered, shoppers should also look into what
type of fuel the vehicle needs.
Many drivers are aware of the different
grades of gasoline available at the pump.
Unleaded versions come in regular, plus
and premium varieties, which coordinates
to the octane of the gasoline. The octane rat-
ing of gasoline tells a driver how much the
fuel can be compressed before it spontane-
ously ignites, rather than igniting normally
from a spark plug in the vehicle engine.
Lower-octane gasoline can withstand less
compression than higher-octane gasoline.
Gas that ignites on its own rather than
from a spark from the spark plug causes
knocking and pinging, which can damage
the engine. Therefore it is important to use
the right octane level of gasoline for a ve-
hicle, based on the car’s compression ratio
for the engine. Car engines that are rated in
a particular way will beneft from the cor-
rect octane in gasoline. Higher-performance
engines commonly found in race cars and
sporty, luxury vehicles will generally re-
quire a premium, high-octane gasoline
to run at their optimal performance. Most
cars on the market are built to take regular
87-octane gasoline.
A visit to the gas station clearly indi-
cates that higher-octane fuel costs more per
gallon than the lowest octane. Over time,
flling up with premium gas can be a sig-
nifcant factor in how much it costs to own a
particular vehicle. If you are looking to save
money, it is important to consider just how
much of your budget will be devoted to fuel
costs. A vehicle that requires premium gas-
oline instead of regular gasoline may end up
costing a few hundred dollars more per year
based on the size of the fuel tank.
It is important to note that using a higher
octane fuel in a vehicle that is not rated for it
will not increase performance -- it only will
end up costing you more. That’s because the
octane rating refers to how much energy it
takes to ignite the gasoline and at what point
in the compression cycle, not how much
power the gasoline will put out. Premium
gas will not improve gas mileage or give the
vehicle more “oomph” if the engine is not
designed to accommodate a higher-octane
fuel. In fact, engines that are not designed
for high-octane gas may actually lose power
because it burns so much slower and the ig-
nition timing is not tuned for it.
It is always wise to consult with the
owner’s manual to determine the type of
fuel that will offer the best performance in
the car. Those shopping for a new vehicle
should pay attention to octane ratings and
not assume that every car they test drive is
best when running on regular octane. n

Many drivers feel less comfortable be-
hind the wheel at night than they do during
the day, when daylight makes it easier to
see fellow motorists as well as pedestrians.
Nighttime can compromise a driver’s vision,
and that reduced vision is a key factor in
traffc fatalities, nearly half of which occur
at night.
Though traffc accidents are a byprod-
uct of a host of factors, headlamp clouding
is one of them and a growing problem for
many motorists. Vehicles equipped with
plastic headlamp lenses can become hazed
and yellowed from the effects of sunlight,
ozone, road pollution and the chemicals
used in car washes. When driving at night,
cloudy headlamps combine with little or no
natural light to decrease visibility and pose a
signifcant safety threat to drivers, their pas-
sengers and fellow motorists. Drivers cannot
increase the amount of natural light at night,
but there are steps they can take to improve
their nighttime visibility.
Address cloudy headlamps. Plastic head-
lamp lenses, especially as they age, reduce
headlight output considerably, compromis-
ing nighttime vision and the safety of driv-
ers and their passengers. But as potentially
dangerous as cloudy headlamps can be, it’s
just as easy for drivers to address the issue
before it becomes a problem. Employing an
advanced technology that works with mini-
mal effort, the Philips Headlight Restoration
Kit is designed for do-it-yourselfers and can
help restore headlight lenses to like-new
condition in less than 30 minutes. In lieu of
a costly headlamp replacement, the Philips
Headlight Restoration Kit allows motorists
to quickly and signifcantly improve the
light output of their headlamps, taillights,
turn signals and refective lens covers.
Keep wiper blades fresh. Vision is already
compromised at night, when the lack of
natural light can make it diffcult to see pe-
destrians or animals on the road. That vis-
ibility is only further compromised by brittle
or ineffective wiper blades, which should be
changed every 90-120 days to ensure opti-

mal performance. Driv-
ers who live in areas with
heavy rain or snowfall
should inspect their wip-
er blades more frequent-
ly, especially if there is
pitting on the windshield.
Check the windshield
washer periodically.
The windshield washer is an often over-
looked aspect of vehicle maintenance.
Unfortunately, it’s typically too late by the
time many motorists notice an issue with
their windshield washer. Don’t fall victim
to a faulty windshield washer in the middle
of a rainstorm or a blizzard. Inspect the
windshield washer periodically to ensure
it’s working properly and keep the fuid lev-
el topped off so it’s there when you need it.
* Think ahead. In addition to addressing
existing issues, drivers can take steps to en-
sure their nighttime visibility is protected
over the long haul. The Philips Headlight
Restoration Kit, for example, employs a
protective UV coating that can prevent fu-
ture clouding for up to two years. In addi-
tion to addressing the headlamps, consider
how your visibility is likely to be affected
during the worst possible snowstorm or on
a night with torrential rains. Keep those
conditions in mind when deciding whether
or not to hang any fuzzy dice or other trin-
kets from your rearview mirror. While such
items can add a touch of personality to your
vehicle, the decreased visibility such items
can cause is not worth the cost over the long
haul. n

Few parents look forward to the day when
they must teach their teenager to drive a car.
Handing over the keys to a teenager and
then riding shotgun as he or she learns the
basics is hardly a recipe for a stress-free af-
ternoon, but it’s a part of life many parents
must endure sooner or later, and it’s a rite of
passage for their children.
While it’s likely your son or daughter will
not be a great driver from the get-go, there
are ways parents can make the process of
teaching their teen to drive less stressful and
more likely to be a success.
Utilize an empty parking lot as a classroom.
Empty parking lots are great places to teach
teens to drive. In an empty parking lot, teens
can practice skills like turning or braking
without the risk of running into another
driver. This gives kids the feel of a ve-
hicle and an opportunity to familiarize
themselves with the vehicle’s controls,
including those for turn signals and
headlights. Find an empty parking
lot that is large, such as one outside a
closed grocery store or a nearby school
when school is not in session.
Find a less-traveled road to practice
more subtle driving skills. Once your
teen has become familiar with the ve-
hicle, a good next step is to fnd a back
road or a road without heavy traffc
where he or she can learn more subtle
driving skills that might be diffcult to
learn in a parking lot. Coming to a stop,
maintaining a safe distance between
vehicles, accelerating and decelerating
on roadways and learning to share the
road with pedestrians and/or cyclists are all
valuable lessons that can be learned on a
back road without heavy traffc.
Some lessons are best learned on the free-
way. Some skills, including changing lanes
and merging into traffc, are best learned on
the freeway or highway. Teens will eventu-
ally take to the highway once they get their
driver’s license, so it’s best to teach them
how to handle using on and off ramps and
learning to yield when entering a highway
so they’re comfortable with such driving
and don’t have to teach themselves.
Teach kids to anticipate other drivers. An-
ticipating other drivers is a lesson even
some veteran adult drivers must learn, much
less teen drivers with little or no experi-
ence driving. When teaching teenagers to
drive, emphasize how diffcult it can be to
anticipate other drivers’ maneuvers and how
defensive driving techniques are designed
to help drivers predict what other drivers
will do in order to protect themselves from
drivers who might be unpredictable. Teach
teens to keep an eye out for drivers routinely

switching lanes without signaling and tell them to
be mindful of other drivers when they pull up to
a stop sign. Teens who will become good drivers
will eventually fnd such techniques are second
nature, but initially parents should instruct them in
the ways to anticipate the behavior of other drivers
so the teens can stay safe on the road.
Practice driving at different times of the day.
Taking teens out to drive at different times of the
day can teach them that road conditions, even
when the weather is nice, vary depending on the
amount of light. Driving at dusk and dawn, for in-
stance, can be diffcult because glare from the sun
can decrease visibility and headlights might not
provide much help. Like learning to drive on the
highway, learning to drive at various times of the
day is a valuable lesson that kids should learn with
their parents in tow and not on their own after they
have received their driver’s license. n
Parents can employ various methods to help their teen become more comfortable behind the wheel.
There are different times in a driver’s life when he or she may
have to pull over on the side of the road. Whether a fat tire has de-
railed the trip, the driver or a passenger is experiencing motion sick-
ness or you fnd the car isn’t performing correctly and it warrants a
look under the hood, pulling over on the shoulder may be necessary.
It can be diffcult to pull over smoothly and safely on a busy
highway, especially when you are in a stressful situation, such as
a mechanical emergency. But it is in your best interest to remain
calm and follow a few procedures. First, slow down and put on your
right-turn signal to indicate you will need to move into the right
lane. Some people prefer to put their four-way-fashers on after they
have successfully cleared the lanes and are ready to navigate onto
the shoulder. Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or
where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other
drivers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exit-
ing or attempting to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Drivers should
keep an emergency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing
fares, emergency triangles or cones, a fashlight, batteries, a poncho,
booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blanket, and frst aid
supplies in the car as a precaution. Each item serves its own unique
purpose.
It is recommended staying inside the vehicle, especially on a busy
road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches
of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have
a roadside assistance plan membership can use a cell phone to make
a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police
arrive. n
