INTRODUCTION

A PERFECT
At the School of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE), we have big ideas. With close industrial ties, an innovative culture and a wide spectrum of research specialities, we have progressed to be one of the biggest and most comprehensive materials research institute in the world. We pride ourselves on brilliance. Join us by taking your first step.

INTRODUCTION

SPHERE
INNOVATION RESEARCH

None of the world around us would be possible without materials innovation. The structure and nature of everything are defined by their materials, and only through a thorough understanding of these materials can a person truly understand the fabric of the modern world. Innovative materials engineering is what makes the latest technology a reality, beyond the scientific theories and research laboratories. The world surges forward ever faster so there is always a crucial need for superior materials to pave the way. Materials engineers and scientists are the ones whom we turn to, to meet and exceed those needs. At Nanyang Technological University (NTU), we are offering a comprehensive programme for those whose interest lies in discovering more about the world of materials engineering.

Our institution will provide you with a wellrounded curriculum and state-of-the-art facilities to nurture that passion and interest in you. Faculty members come from across the globe, bringing with them an international viewpoint and a wide spectrum of research specialities. They are not just educators, but also researchers and scientists who can take you from the classroom and into the realities of the industry. Facilitating this, MSE maintains strong ties to many industry greats, such as 3M and Exxonmobil, as well as some of the worlds top universities, such as MIT and Cambridge University. Education at NTU may begin within the campus but it does not end there we provide our students with a wealth of opportunities to learn and work with the best beyond campus..

was started by a group of MSE undergraduates. Their concept involved developing a baby milk bottle made from special materials that changed colours according to the temperature of its content, and this won the heart of judges at a business plan competition. They won seed fund to turn their idea into reality.

NANOMATERIALS

The defense materials group in MSE focuses on the development of high value added functional materials and technologies. Their research activities include both materials innovation as well as platform integration for various advanced applications in defense.

The materials for sustainability group in MSE prioritises three areas of research, namely clean energy harvesting, solar fuels and energy storage.

CLOSE
INDUSTRIAL
The school actively collaborates with industrial partners at all levels, be it working on industrial sponsored projects and/or having jointlaboratories on campus. These collaborations give students ample opportunities to apply theories learnt in classrooms to practical practice, and allow the school to stay relevant to the industry.

SPORTS MATERIALS
In MSE, the nanomaterials and nanoelectronics group places attention on the development of potential application(s) in sensing, green energy, environmental remediation and medical diagnostics. MSEs sports materials group concentrates on developing advanced materials for application in footwear design and performance, protective equipment, apparel as well as wearable electronics in the sporting industry.

I have received quality education through NTUs holistic approach to teaching. My two months at Yonsei University in Korea and 6 months at Linkoping University in Sweden, as part of the NTU global exchange programme, have provided me with international exposure. While studying overseas, I have also had the opportunity to travel to over 30 cities within Europe and Korea within this short but amazing period of time. Furthermore, I have also represented NTU as a student delegate in the Ministry of Education Sino-Singapore exchange in China for two weeks.

I did my Industrial Attachment (IA) in ExxonMobil for 6 months, in the department of Inspection. The department is responsible for maintaining and improving the reliability of all the equipment and piping by planning and and executing a good inspection programme. The knowledge on materials failure and failure analysis, as well as the properties of some basic engineering materials are necessary for this job, and almost 80% of the engineers in this department have a Materials Engineering degree. I must say that

The various programmes organised by the school have also benefitted me tremendously.

The schools Leadership Excellence Programme was particularly helpful in my growth as a student, helping me to develop my leadership skills further and prepare myself to work better in a team. Also, being part of

the committee of the MSE Club and working under the schools Work Study Scheme has taught me better time management skills as I had to juggle CCA duties with work and academic study. Overall, the experiences I have gained in NTU MSE have been very enriching and fulfilling. Im sure that you can have an enriching journey during your undergraduate studies at NTU, too!

engineer. I have also gained more technical knowledge through encountering real life engineering problems and applications. Lastly, I have also improved my soft skills in terms of communication, time management and work planning during these 6 months.

I have had a very enriching journey during my IA, as Ive met a lot of nice seniors and colleagues who have been very willing to share their knowledge and experience with me. Something I took away from this IA was to be clearer on the overall picture of the industry and job as an inspection

An alumnus of MSE, Associate Professor Joachim Loos expertise lies in the field of biomaterials and nanomaterials. His more recent work on nanotoxicology, studying the properties of materials on the nano scale, was featured prominently in The Straits Times. In addition to being a well-regarded researcher, he is also a personable educator who is well-liked by his students. This is evident in 2011, when he won the Teaching Excellence Award and was voted as the Teacher of the Year in 2012.

Ali Miserez

Assistant Professor Ali Miserez is emphatic that engineering need not be boring and a great deal of interesting work is always being carried out in MSE. His area of expertise is biological and biomimetic materials, which looks at the way nature works, and uses them as models for engineering. His latest research found that a tiny marine animal, the mantis shrimp, has a unique woven-structure in their club-like arms which is tougher than many man-made ceramics. This gave clue to producing tougher medical implants.

Thank you MSE!

Apart from the driven but rewarding academic studies, the School of Materials Science and Engineering building has a very beautiful E-space, which allows students like myself to study, have a free cup of coffee and relax by playing board games. Such an environment allows us to not only work hard but also be well-rested.

Upon graduation, I worked as a Materials Engineer in Advanpack Solutions, where I spearheaded many cutting-edge projects, such as the electronic packaging materials development programme for Intel Corporation. It was in this role that I developed a strong interest in entrepreneurship. I decided to pursue this passion and so founded Hydroemission Corp in 2003. Within a few years, the companys technology gained relevant market appreciation and is now a global player, offering innovative products worldwide.
