SNHU TEFL PROGRAM EXPERIENCE I think I am very lucky to join Cohort II _ SNHUVNU.

I joined in this course in September, 2008. The first period, I have learned eleven VNU’s subjects. Then I was confirmed the second period with SNHU program. Up till now, I have studied three subjects and a library training lesson. 1. EFL523 with Prof. Rose Mary. After this course, I think I am more active and confident in studying and working. I got used to the way of studying and working professionally. I am more positive than I was. As usual, I depended on the teaching models but now I have to study and work myself. I have received a lot of precious experience in teaching English, especially in teaching speaking and listening. After taking part in the sample lessons, there are many ways to teach speaking and listening, but I have to find the ways to teach them more effectively. We can change the lesson plan in a specific ways suitably. I think the final aim of the lesson is what learners achieve after each lesson. This could not happen in the past because it is a tradition in Vietnam. Concerning the problems in teaching English lessons, we have had useful discussions. I think these discussions are of very useful and interesting. After exchanging the experience, each of us will have private ways to deal with it and this gives us precious moments. All the lessons we studied are very useful. They help me very much in my teaching. I have gained a lot of experience in teaching English, especially in teaching speaking and listening. I think that if we had more time, we would have had more experience and of course we will have more discussions about the problems in English class in order to exchange and study more. Thanks, my teacher Rose Mary! 2. EFL531 with Prof. Gary Pronunciation is a very difficult skill with Vietnamese learners. Almost learners do not pronounce exactly. They often make mistakes with the last consonants of words, word stress, intonation or wrong sounds. They do not pay attention to the consonants, word stress or intonation. They do not know how to pronounce these sounds as well as know where these sounds are pronounced or the positions of tongue to pronounce the sounds. I think all exercises that my teacher gave out are very useful for us. They help us to improve our pronunciation. We know well about different positions of sounds. We practised them in monosyllable, words and sentences correctly. We can realize and distinguish some vowels and consonants, for example, /J /, /dZ /,/Z /,/z /, /w /,.... We paid attention to the last consonants of words and pronounce correctly step by step.

Besides, my teacher instructs us the way to breathe in order to pronounce effectively. After practicing, we can see a lot of progress in our pronunciation process. We can pronounce long sentences with correct intonation and word stress. In fact, my pronunciation skill has improved much after the classes and I can apply much useful knowledge in my lectures in the future. I can help my students with correct and accurate pronunciation by showing them where the sounds are, how to put their tongue in order to pronounce the sounds correctly. With a good pronunciation, my students will find it confident and active in their daily conversation not only with their classmates and teachers but also with the foreigners. I would like to say thank you to your help in this course. I hope you will share more your teaching experiences with us. Thanks, my teacher Gary! 3. EFL537 with Prof. Jeff. Up till now, I feel very lucky when I join this Cohort-SNHUVNU, especially EFL537 course. After studying this course, I really feel that my computer knowledge improve considerably. I can use soft-wares and programs usefully in learning and teaching English in general and learning and teaching English in particular. In this course, we studied IrfanView, Bookmarking and, Audacity, Hot Potatoes, Video,,, They are useful tools to help teachers in teaching English. You can apply all the softwares and programs to design your lessons. I think the lessons are very interesting and effective. Besides, you can design online lessons. You can teach from your office or your home but they are still interesting and effective. I love this subject. I want to do all the tasks or more in order to have the skills which are useful for my teaching in the future. I would like to say that modern technology is essential and useful for us to learn and teach English. Thanks, my teacher Jeff. He is whole-hearted to teach, explain and help us in this course. 4. Library with Prof. Daniel. I think reading is very important and useful for both teachers and learners. Reading makes you open your mind and knowledge. Prof. Daniel provide us the codes to access to SNHU’s library and other. We can read many documents, for example, articles, journals, books, subjects,…. In order to improve our knowledge. Thanks, Prof. Daniel! Posted by Ta Duc - VNU14, EFL537 – Spring 2009.
