There seems to be more entertainment award shows than ever. I “googled” it and here are a few: People Choice Awards, Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actor Guilds, Director Guilds, Grammy, Academy. And there are more. It is amazing the talent and creativity God has allowed people to acquire. Yet if we’re giving out awards I would have to begin right here at Eastmont. Of course this is not like Hollywood’s effort to congratulate themselves. The work we do here is to honor Christ and you are the most unselfish, dedicated, sacrificial and gifted people anywhere. At the close of each month I review all the ministries we completed. Every time! Every time, I am astonished at your faithfulness. The list is amazing. Greeters, teachers, musicians, children workers, bus drivers, yard workers, visitors, singing, praying, givers, helpers, phone calling, food service, nursery workers and a whole lot more. I have to tell you I am one of the most blessed pastors anywhere to have a congregation like you. By the way, some of these people have blessed you too. Why not award them by praying for them today. Fred Craddock was in a grocery store looking for peanut butter. Fred was 70 years old and a retired Disciples of Christ minister. He could not find the peanut butter so he decided to ask for help. Here is what happened. “Uh, Miss could you direct me to the peanut butter?” She jerked around, stared at me and said, “Are you trying to hit on me?” I said “I’m just looking for peanut butter.” So I slowly backed away and found a stock boy and asked him. “Aisle five, way down on the left.” He instructed. I went down aisle five and found the big jars of peanut butter. I took one. As I turned to leave, that woman was standing there and she said, “You really were looking for peanut butter!” I said, “I told you I was looking for peanut butter!” She paused and said “Well, nowadays you can’t be too careful.” And I said “Lady, yes you can. Yes you can.” Caution and wisdom are important. Yet we can become so cautious we never venture out of our comfort zone to reach and help others. You can’t steal second base and keep your foot on first. And you can’t reach a neighbor you never bother to meet. I want to thank you for being a church willing to try new things in order to reach the lost. A ship in the harbor is safe from a storm, but it can still rot and rust. Plus the best fishing is in the deep where the waves are bigger. Thanks for being a church that takes prayerfully, calculated risks.
