• • • •

Computer Step 1: Create a new account for your children. Open the Control Panel, and then choose User Accounts and Family Safety. Now click on User Accounts. You will then be presented with a list of the existing accounts on your computer. Step 2: Choose Create a New Account, and then enter the name of your child. Click on the Standard account option to prevent your child from installing or uninstalling important programs or changing the parental controls. Step 3: Set the password for this account. Choose the account and then click on Create a Password. Type in your desired password. After doing this, only the person who knows the password can gain access to this account.

• •

Step 4: Enable the Parental Controls. Choose the Set up Parental Controls. A warning message will then appear, prompting you to enter your administrator password for access. Step 5: Click on your child's recently established account. You will then be able to view the available Parental Control preferences for this account. By default, the Parental Control option is off. Click On to activate it, and choose the Enforce Current option.

Tips & Warnings • You can keep track of your child's computer activities through the activated Activity Reporting function. This function allows you to keep track of various details about your child's activity through their account. You are updated on what kind of games they have been playing, how long they stayed on the computer, and what programs were they using, or if they attempted to do something that you have prevented them from doing. • Microsoft Vista's Parental Control also enables you to set limits to your child's computer usage. The Time Limits option in the Vista's Parental Control enables you to choose the times your child can log in to the computer. When your child attempts to log in during a blocked time, Windows will deny them access. • Make sure that your child does not have access to your administrator password. >>> http://blogs.technet.com/seanearp/archive/2007/07/09/where-did-my-vista-parental-controls-go.aspx Parental Controls on Windows Vista are a great way to take charge of how your kiddoes use the computer. You can restrict time limitations, the ratings of games they are allowed to play, block or allow specific programs, block or allow specific websites, and get activity reports on what they have been up to. While it might be nice to watch over their shoulder at all times, it is nice to allow Vista to help enforce some of the rules you have laid out.

You may have noticed, however, that Parental Controls might be missing from the Control Panel where it lives:

Windows Vista Parental Controls are a consumer-oriented technology, so if you are running Windows Vista Enterprise or Business, this is expected behavior. If you are using Windows Vista Ultimate, however, you will also encounter this behavior if your computer is joined to a domain. Windows Vista Parental Controls is a Consumer-Only Technology Windows Vista Parental Controls are not intended to be used with domain accounts. As a consumer technology, Parental Controls is not deployed in business SKUs of Windows Vista. If a machine is joined to a domain, the Family Safety user interface links will be suppressed. A mechanism will be provided to expose the functionality for the domain-joined case, but only non-domain user accounts may be configured with Parental Controls. To enable Parental Controls on a domain-joined Windows Vista Ultimate installation: Start --> gpedit.msc Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Parental Controls “Make Parental Controls control panel visible on a Domain”
