Slow Start to the Season
What a different a year can make. Seems as if everyone has been saying this the past few weeks, as winter is not giving up this spring. The course opened for a brief 5 days until this last winter storm came through and dumped a few inches of rain, sleet, ice, and snow the past 3 days. It does look like this will be the last of winter, which is always a plus, but from the models I have seen, it doesn’t look like it’s going to warm up for a while. As always keep posted to both the Facebook and Twitter accounts as to when we will open back up, hopefully for good this time. A big positive with all of this wet weather recently, is that we have finally gotten the much needed moisture we have lacked the past few years. It didn’t take long on Tuesday for our irrigation pond to fill up. We did record 1.25 inches of rain on Tuesday, before all of the hail and sleet that night along with 2-3 inches of snow Thursday. This colder weather has allowed me to accomplish a few other tasks on the golf course you have seen along with a few more to come in the near future, as I am not busy with the irrigation system and mowing quite yet. If you haven’t already, don’t’ forget to pay your membership and league dues to Russ. Men’s league starts in a few weeks on April 24, which will be a fun night, followed by the first night of league on April 30/May 2. Women’s league will start on May 13 this year. quite a bit of spring cleanup throughout the course. We did remove 4 trees throughout the course, limb up some of the evergreens on #5 & #8, along with cleaning out the leaves in each of the landscaped tee boxes. I have also been working on putting a fresh coat of paint on our tee markers and ball washers, prior to opening this past week. Finally this past Wednesday, April 3, I put the first cut on the greens, tees, and fairways; greening these areas up a bit by removing the dead tissue from the winter.

Changes in 2013
As you all have been out already or start to golf in the next few weeks, you will notice quite a few changes this year already. We have already gone to the red, white, blue system for our flags, allowing the golfer to know the pin location from a distance. There is an explanation of this on the website at www.ryanmgalles.shutterfl y.com , then click on Remsen GC. I have also installed the yardage blocks in the fairways, replacing the sticks we had previously used. The color codes will be the same other than the addition of a 250 yard marker (Gold-250, Blue200, White-150, Red-100). Another change that is near completion is cutting around all the irrigation heads. This was done for two reasons, the first is to allow those heads to work correctly and the second is that during the course of the season we will be adding yardage to the heads. With the heads being trimmed it will allow the golfer to see the heads from a distance to get the correct yardage for their upcoming shot. I have also been doing

April/May Projects
Over the next few weeks in April and the start of May, we have several projects improving the course. The first project that will begin this weekend, will be the reconstruction of both of our bunkers. Both bunkers are heavily contaminated with silt and clay, locking them up and not allowing water to penetrate through to our drainage system in both bunkers. This locking up of the sand is the main reason why the bunkers are so hard and unplayable. Over the next few weeks, we will begin the process of digging both of them out and reshaping them in necessary. Once dug out, we will check to ensure the drainage system works. Upon that, we will be edging the bunker creating a crisp and clean edge followed by filling the bunkers back in. There will be a volunteer sign-up sheet to help with filling the bunkers back in as we will need a few people packing down the sand and raking it in evenly, while we have our truckster loading/unloading sand into both bunkers. Once the prep work for the bunkers is complete we will have a date set to complete the project. If anyone is interested in helping in this process just contact me. We will also be spiking the fairways, yet in April, similar to aerification, without the mess. Spiking the fairways will allow water to penetrate to the deeper roots along with allowing oxygen to get to these roots too. This will improve both the health and vigor of the turf, promoting growth early in the season, as we have many areas throughout our fairways that have been struggling. This will be followed by a spring application of fertilizer in mid-May providing a full pound of nitrogen to the plant, also promoting growth of the turf and helping it green up. Finally the last project, of this spring, will be the startup of the irrigation system towards the end of the month. I will be adjusting the run times on each head along with adjusting some of the heads as the irrigation system was a concern at the end of last year. I did notice that the greens heads didn’t have any tail nozzles, watering areas closer to the heads. This would explain the dead spots near a lot of the irrigation heads, as the head of the sprinkler shoots further, with the tail picking up the turf closer to the head. The other concern I saw was that the irrigation system wasn’t being ran long enough to supply an adequate amount of water to the turf. I will be adjusting this so that the fairways/tees run 18 minutes per head and the greens 15 minutes per head. With this addition of time to the system, it will need to begin around dusk in order for it to be complete by starting time the next morning. If you are out golfing right before dark, just be aware of this. -----------------------------------
