TRAFFIC SUMMARY

During the month of January 2013, all operational airports (taken together) handled 124.22 thousand aircraft movements (excluding General Aviation Movements), 14.25 million passengers and 169.23 thousand tonnes of freight. The above table reveals that the aircraft movements, passenger and freight traffic have decreased by 7.1 per cent, 0.7 per cent and 3.9 per cent respectively during January 2013 over traffic handled during January 2012.

AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:
TRAFFIC TREND: JANUARY 2013 VIS-A-VIS JANUARY 2012 TOTAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

2.1.1

The total aircraft movements (International and Domestic) handled in January 2013 has shown a decline of 7.1 per cent as compared to the aircraft movement handled in January 2012 (refer to Annexure-I). Growth rates of traffic handled by different categories of airports are given in Annexure I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure IIC.

2.1.2 INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The international aircraft movements have increased by 5.2 per cent during the period under review. Growth rates of traffic handled by different categories of airports are given in Annexure I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure-IIA. Commencement of international operation by Air India from March 2012 is contributed to the highest growth at Visakhapatnam airport. The higher growth in traffic at other airports is contributed to increase in frequency by existing airlines / start of operation by new airlines. 2.1.3 DOMESTIC AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

The domestic aircraft movements have decreased by 10.1 per cent during January 2013 compared to aircraft movements handled in January 2012. Growth rates of traffic handled by different categories of airports are given in AnnexureI and airport-wise details are given in Annexure IIB. TRAFFIC TREND: APRJAN 2012-13 VIS-A-VIS APR JAN 2011-12 TOTAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: -

2.2.1

The total aircraft movements have witnessed a decline of 4.5 per cent i.e. from 1292.38 thousand movements to 1234.39 thousand movements during the period April-January 2012-13 as compared to the aircraft movements handled during the period April-January 2011-12. Growth rates of traffic handled by different categories of airports are given in Annexure-I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure-IIC. 2.2.2. INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

The international aircraft movements have shown a marginal increase of 0.4 per cent during AprilJanuary 2012-13. Growth rates of traffic handled by different categories of airports are given in Annexure I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure IIA. The higher growth in traffic at above airports is due to increase in frequency by existing airlines / start of operation by new airlines. The higher growth in traffic at Tirupati Airport is attributed to commencement of operation by SpiceJet from January 2012. Commencement of operation by SpiceJet from April 2012 is contributed to significant growth at Calicut Airport.

TOTAL PASSENGER TRAFFIC:

The total passenger traffic handled during AprilJanuary 2012-13 have decreased to 131.66 million from 135.61 million registering a decrease of 2.9 per cent as compared to the passenger handled during April January 201112. The international passenger traffic has registered an increase of 4.6 per cent at all airports taken together during the period under review. The share of domestic passenger traffic is shown graphically in chart 5.1. The overall share of passengers in Low Cost Airlines is increased to 54.6% in January 2013 as against 46.3% in January 2012. The detailed airport-wise share of Air India Limited and Private Airlines in domestic traffic is given in the table 5.1

The dispersion of air traffic in terms of percentage handled at different categories of airports in the country is shown in the Table - 6.1. The dispersion of traffic is also depicted in the Chart 6.1 for the month of January 2013. The Table 6.1 shows that seventeen international airports have major share in the countrys air traffic i.e.79.5 per cent, 84.6 per cent and 96.6 per cent in aircraft movements, passenger and freight traffic respectively.

7.0 REGIONWISE TREND AND SHARE IN TOTAL TRAFFIC:


7.1 REGION WISE TREND: All the Regions have registered negative growth of 7.1% in total Aircraft Movement during January 2013 compared to January 2012. All the regions except Western Region have registered marginal negative growth of 0.7 % in total passenger traffic during January 2013 compared to January 2012. All the regions have registered negative growth of 3.9 % in total Freight traffic during January 2013 compared to January 2012. Category wise & Region wise trends in traffic during January 2013 and for the period April-January 2012-13 vis--vis April-January 2011-12 may be visualized in the Annexure V. 7.2 REGION WISE SHARE: Southern Region has witnessed the highest percentage share of 31.7 % in total Aircraft Movements followed by Western Region with 29.4% and Northern Region with 25.1 % during January 2013. Western Region has witnessed the highest percentage share of 30.7 % in total passenger traffic closely followed by Southern Region with 30.5% and Northern Region with 27.1 % during January 2013. Western Region has witnessed the highest percentage share of 33.6% in total freight traffic followed by Southern Region with 32.7% and Northern Region with 27.2% during January 2013. Category-wise and Region-wise share in traffic during January 2013 and for the period April-January 2012-13 vis--vis April-January 2011-12 may be visualized in the annexureV.

8.0 WORLD TRAFFIC SCENARIO DURING JANUARY 2013:


The passenger and freight traffic flash reported by ACI for January 2013, which reveal World Passenger Traffic posted positive growth. Middle East Region has witnessed the highest growth rate of 11.9 per cent followed by Africa Region with 2.4 per cent in total passenger traffic. Freight growth figures are less impressive as compared to Passenger growth. Asia Pacific Region has witnessed the highest growth rate of 11.3 per cent followed by Middle East Region with 10.7 per cent in the total freight traffic. 8.1 PASSENGER TRAFFIC: In January 2013, total passenger traffic demand rose by 1.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2012. International passenger traffic was increased by 3.1 per cent and domestic passenger traffic was slightly up by 0.3 per cent during January 2013. Middle East Region has registered the highest passenger traffic growth rate of 12.6 per cent in international category whereas Latin America and Caribbean Region has registered the highest passenger traffic growth rate of 2.8 per cent in domestic category during January 2013 compared to January 2012. Global passenger traffic increased by 3.5 per cent during the year ending January 2013 compared to the year ending January 2012 with international passenger traffic grew by 5.1 per cent and domestic passenger traffic increased by 2.3 per cent.

8.2 FREIGHT TRAFFIC: Total freight handled worldwide in January 2013 was increased by 7.4 percent compared to January 2012. International freight increased by 5.2 per cent and Domestic freight was increased by 12.5 per cent. Middle East Region has witnessed the highest growth rate of 10.7 per cent in international whereas Asia Pacific Region has registered the significant growth rate of 22.5 per cent in domestic category during January 2013 compared to January 2012. Total freight handled worldwide during the year ending January 2013 has witnessed a marginal increase of 0.8 percent compared to the year ending January 2012. International freight traffic was marginally increased by 0.1 per cent whereas Domestic freight traffic increased by 1.7 per cent for the same period.
