Blore Urban dist all set for polls
BANGALORE, DHNS: Banga-

lore Urban Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj on Monday said they had completed 80 per cent of election preparations for seven constituencies in Bangalore Urban district. Ponnuraj said as many as 2,011 polling stations had been set up for the Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Yeshwantpur, Dasarahalli, Mahadevapura and Bangalore South constituencies in the district. There will be an additional 308 polling stations in areas where the population is more, he said. He said 852 polling stations had been segregated as normal, 725 as sensitive, 556 as hyper-sensitive, 167 as vulnerable and 96 as critical stations. More number of video surveillance teams and paramilitary forces will be deployed at these stations, he said.

Reinstate Malini at FSL: HC to govt

BANGALORE, DHNS: The High Court of Karnataka on Monday directed the State government to reinstate Dr Malini as Deputy Director of Forensic Science Laboratory. Dr Malini was removed from service following an order passed by the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal in 2009. She had approached the High Court challenging the governments decision to terminate her employment on the ground that she had produced a false certificate to secure the post. Dr Malini had contended that her services were terminated on account of pressure from the Opposition party on the floor of the House. The Bench said the government neither conducted any investigation into the allegation against Dr Malini nor issued her a notice of termination. It directed the government to reinstate her with all facilities and benefits.

In a letter to Rajneesh Goel, Principal Secretary, Higher Education department, the Association secretary MK Panduranga Shetty said on Monday that the uncertainity had created undue pressure on engineering colleges. Nearly 75 to 80 per cent of the total expenditure incurred by engineering colleges took the form of salaries paid to lecturers in accordance with the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. The only source of revenue for the private professional educational institutions to meet their financial commitments is the fee collected from students, the letter said. Speaking to Deccan Herald,

Shetty said costs incurred by colleges have gone up by 110 per cent in many cases. We cannot sustain colleges this way. We do not get subsidy from the government, he added.

The state government was supposed to take a decision on the fee structure and the seat matrix by April 10. In March, Minister for Higher Education CT Ravi had announced that they would announce fresh fee structure for this year, based on a report submitted by the Principal Secretary, Higher Education department. The report was supposed to assess the costs incurred by colleges for professional courses and accordingly recommend fees. However, no such decision has been announced by the government till date. The exercise on fixing new fee structure began after the government received complaints last year that certain professional colleges were charging exorbitant fee for added infrastructure on campus, apart from the government prescribed fee.

Transfers stayed The High Court has stayed the transfer of eight IAS officers till Tuesday. The officers, who were transferred on the direction of the Election Commission, had approached the Central Administrative Tribunal. The Tribunal stayed the transfers and the Election Commission, in turn, has approached the High Court in appeal. The officers have contended that they were transferred before completing their tenure as deputy commissioners. The Division Bench posted the matter for Tuesday.
