Greek Mythology

Greek mythology is myths and teachings concerning the peoples gods, goddesses and heroes.

Demeter
Demeter was the goddess of the earth, of agriculture, and of fertility in general. The country experienced failure when her daughters were taken away to be married which lead to the reduction of crops failure in which she grieved for her daughters however the land became desolate.

Persephone
She was the daughter of Demeter and was the goddess
of springtime after she was abducted by Hades that is when she became wife and Queen of the underworld for six months of each year.

Dionysus
He was the god of fertility and wind and later considered a patron of art. He was the son of Zeus and Semele which tried to protect him before he was killed by the Titians then brought back by Rhea. Among all the gods he was the only one to have mortal parents. He

was considered a very important god for everyday life. He became associated with several key concepts. One was rebirth after death.

Eros
Eros was the god of love. He uses darts and arrows as his weapons. Eros has symbols such as hearts, wings and kisses. His roman equivalent is Cupid and he is one of the primordial gods involved in the coming into being of the cosmos. Eros was depicted as an adult male who embodies sexual power. The fourth day of every month was sacred to him.

Hebe
Hebe was the personification of youth and immortality .Her name means youth and prime of life.. One of her Weaknesses is She has less charisma than many of the Greek Goddesses, relying on her gifts to get attention. She was also said to be clumsy.

Eris
ERIS was the goddess or spirit of strife, discord, contention and rivalry. she frequently accompanies her brother Aris to battles. On these occasions she rides his chariot and brings her son Strife. Because of Eris' disagreeable nature she was the only goddess not to be invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. She is insatiable in her desire for bloodshed.

Helios
Helios (or Helius) was the Titan god of the sun. He was also the guardian of oaths and the god of gift of sight. At dawn he usually drives a chariot by four, fiery winged steeds. Once his son Phaethon attempted to drive the chariot of the sun, but losing control, set the earth on fire. Zeus then struck him down with a thunderbolt.

Thanatos
He was the god or daimon of non-violent death.. Violent death was the domain of Thanatos' blood-craving sisters.Thanatos plays a prominent role in two myths. Once when he was sent to fetch Alkestis to the underworld, he was driven off by Herakles in a fight. Another time he was captured by the criminal Sisyphos who trapped him in a sack so as to avoid death.

Pan
PAN was the god of shepherds and flocks. Pan was depicted as a man with the horns, legs and tail of a goat, and with thick beard, snub nose and pointed ears. He wandered the hills and mountains of Arkadia playing his pan-pipes and chasing Nymphs. Such as Syrinx who ran and was transformed into a clump of reeds.

Nemesis
NEMESIS was the goddess of indignation against and retribution for, evil deeds and undeserved good fortune .this god helped to avenge who were wronged .Nemesis was often sometimes depicted as a winged goddess. Her attributes were apple-branch, rein, lash. in myth Nemesis was particularly concerned with matters of love.

The Graces
Graces, were the three goddesses of grace, beauty, adornment, mirth, festivity, dance and song. The three graces were usually depicted in classical sculpture and mosaic as three naked women, holding hands and dancing in a circle

The Muses
HE MOUSAI (Muses) was the goddesses of music, song and dance, and the source of inspiration to poets. They were also goddesses of knowledge, who remembered all things that had come to pass. Later the Mousai were assigned specific artistic spheres: Kalliope, epic poetry.
