unnatural codes of behavi or which soften us and make us lose that initial impulse, until our spirit is ha rdly noticeable. We are born as a result of a fight. By denying our basic tenden cies, the society we live in eradicates the warring heritage that transforms us into magical beings. Don Juan was always moving, coming or going, supporting this or rejecting that, provoking tensions or discharging them in a burst, shouting his intent or remain ing silent; doing something. He was alive, and his life reflected the ebb and fl ow of the universe. Don Juan told me that, from the moment when the explosion which gave us origin o ccurred, until the moment of our death, we live within a flow. And what aligns u s with that flow? An incessant battle, which only a warrior will attempt. Becaus e of that, he lives in profound harmony with everything. For a warrior, to be harmonious is to flow, not to stop in the middle of the cur rent and try to make a space of artificial and impossible peace. He knows that h e can only give the very best of himself under conditions of maximum tension. Ask yourselves these questions: What am I doing with my life? Does it have a pur pose? Is it tight enough? A warrior accepts his destiny, whatever it may be. A warrior knows that what gives sense to his life is the challenge of death, and death is a personal matter. It is a challenge for each one of us, and one which only sincere warriors accept. We are beings who are going to die. We were programmed to live like beasts, carr ying loads of customs and other people s beliefs until the very end; but we can ch ange all that! The freedom which the warrior s way offers us is within the reach o f your hand; take advantage of it! The tragedy of today s man is not his social condition, but the lack of will to ch ange himself. Sorcerers say that true rebellion, and humanity s only way out as a species, is to stage a revolution against their own stupidity. As you can understand, this is solitary work. The goal of sorcerers is this sorcerers revolution: The unrestricted unfolding of all our perceptual possibilities. Don Juan demonstrated that it is possible! I cannot guide you, but I can put you in front of an abyss which will test all y our abilities. It depends on you, whether you hurl yourself off it to fly, or ru n to hide in the security of your routines. After experimenting for millennia with situations that alter our ways of perceiv ing the world, the sorcerers from ancient Mexico discovered a portentous fact: W e are not forced to live in a single reality, because the universe is constructe d according to very fluid principles which can accommodate almost infinite forms , producing countless ranges of perception. Don Juan claimed that what limits human perception is timidity. To be able to ma nage the world which surrounds us, we have had to give up our perceptual gift; t hat is, the possibility of witnessing everything. We sacrifice the flight of awa reness in exchange for the security of the known. We can live strong, audacious,

A rule of thumb for a warrior is that he makes his decisions so carefully that n othing that may happen as a result of them can surprise him. This energy will enable him to handle some of the energy fields which are ordinarily inaccessible to him. A warrior chooses a path with heart. Man has a dark side. what he learns a s time goes by is to save energy. In the same measure that ritual forced the average man to construct huge churches that were monuments to self-importan ce. judging him by his ac ts or by his words. He sees that nothing is more important than anything else. Be fluid. and th en he rejoices and laughs. An average man is too concerned with liking people or with being liked himself. since he is going to be here in th is world for only a short while. A warrior is tuned to survive. Most people move from act to act without any struggle or thought. A warrior seeks to act rather than talk. and the very act he is perform ing now may well be his last battle on earth. H e waits patiently. for the most trivial of his acts. . he acts. His death will tell him that he is wrong. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. that s all. he can turn to his death and ask if that is so. Anything is one of a million paths. and he sur vives in the best of all possible fashions. Death is the only wise adviser that a warrior has. It s only natural that his last act on earth should be the best of himself. A warrior-hunter gives his last battle its due respect. It s pleasurable that way. as if every act were his last b attle. assesses every act. Only a fool would fail to notice the advantage a warrior-hunter has over his fellow men. one may say w ithout being presumptuous that the experience of experiences is being alive. A warrior-hunter knows that his death is waiting. and since he has intimate knowledge of his death. He must look at every path closely and deliberately. A warrior lives by acting. self-explanatory and complete. To be a warrior one needs to be light and fluid. A warrior must learn to make every act count. a warrior must always keep in min d that a path is only a path. Do you know at this very moment you are surrounded by eternity? And do you know that you can use that eternity if you so desire? Feeling important makes one heavy. too short for witnessing all the marve ls of it. nor by thinking about w hat he will think when he has finished acting. he proceeds judiciously. A warrior is never concerned about his fear. and knowing what he is waiting fo r. A warrior takes responsibility for his acts. He lets go. His decision to keep on that path or to l eave it must be free of fear or ambition. He calls it a battle because it is a struggle. an arm s length behind u s.ions are over. Therefore. A warrior thinks of death when things become unclear. he must not stay with it under any conditions. That is the warrior s way. Therefore. The idea of death is the o nly thing that tempers our spirit. no one can make him do things against h imself or against his better judgment. There is a question that a warrior has to ask: Does this path have a heart? Death is our eternal companion. that nothing re ally matters outside its touch. I haven t touched you yet. It is always to our left. That s abandon. He likes whatever or whomever he wants. No one can push him. for the hell of it. A warrior likes. His death will tell him. Life in itself is sufficient. A warrior-hunter. It dulls the edge of his fright. if he feels that he should not follow it. clumsy and vain. on the contrary. Whenever he feels that eve rything is going wrong and he s about to be annihilated. not by thinking about acting. knowing that he is waiting. What counts for a warrior is being alive. Personal history must be constantly renewed by telling parents. while an ordinary man takes everything as a blessi ng or a curse. Only the idea of death makes a warrior sufficiently detached so that he is capab le of abandoning himself to anything. Look at every path closely and deliberately. The hardest thing in the world is to assume the mood of a warrior. he clings to anything out of desperation. And above all. And above all. or a wish. and f riends everything one does. no explanations are needed. or an object. Intent is not a thought. On the other hand. He doesn t use and squeeze people until they have shriveled to nothing. then ask ourselves this crucial que stion: Does this path have a heart? If it does. He knows his death is stalking him and won t give him time to cling to anything so he tries. especially th e people he loves. It operates in spite of the warrior s indulgence. and once he clings he is bound to get exhausted or to exhaust whomever or whatever he is clinging to. relatives. then the path is good. For a warrior. to infinity. What the old sorcere rs were after was the final dramatic end result of reaching that individual thre shold of silence. nobody is angry or disillusioned with hi s acts. Intent is what can make a man succeed when his thoughts tell him that he is defeated. The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior tak es everything as a challenge. Intent is what se nds a shaman through a wall. The desired result is what the old sorcerers called stopping the world . all of everyth ing. make it perfect because there is no other task in our entire lives which is more worthwhile To seek the p erfection of the warrior s spirit is the only task worthy of our temporariness. This is the mo ment when sorcerers return to the TRUE nature of man. ou r humanity. no one pins him down with their thoughts and their expect ations. The old sorcerers always c alled it total freedom . through space. Intent is what makes him invulnerable. Some very talented practitioners need only a few minutes of si lence to reach that coveted goal. It doesn t matter how one was brought up. need long periods of si lence. A warrior-hunter. If his spirit is distorted he should simply fix it purge it. it is of no use. he deliberately avoids exhausting himself and others.
The internal dialogue is what grounds people in the daily world. The passageway into the world of shamans opens up after the warrior has learned to shut off his internal dialogue. free from worri es or thoughts. which. nor is it ge ared to winning or losing. while the warrior is hooke d only to infinity. they always force us to feel enlightened. There s no emptiness in the life of a warrior. The world is su ch and such or so and so. functional and efficacious because he has everything to gain. in spite of being up against the light of a billion stars. but when w e turn around to face the world they always fail us and we end up facing the wor ld as we always have. or we m ake ourselves strong.is always doing something to us. It is rather an end less struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. To seek freedom is the only driving force I know. We mak e ourselves into one or the other. Nobody is doing anything to anybody. And as he wages his battle. The amount of work is the same. to be like the flame of a c andle. without enlightenment. a nd every struggle is a warrior s last battle on earth. but at the same ti me. To achieve the mood of a warrior is not a simple matter. Nobody is bo rn a warrior. much less to a warrior. The most effective way to live is as a warrior. To regard the lion and the water rats and our fellow men as equals is a magnificent act of a warrior s spirit. The average man seeks certainty in the eyes of the onlooker and calls that sel f-confidence. To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. he doesn t permit anyone to lower hi s head to him. The spirit of a warrior is geared only to struggle. The spirit of a warrior is not geared to indulging and complaining. The humbleness of a warrior is not the humbleness of the beggar. falls to his knees at the drop of a hat and scrapes the floor for anyone he deems to be higher. remains . a warrior laughs and laughs. It takes power to do that. Freedom to fly off into that i nfinity out there. Thus the outcome matters ve ry little to him. It is a revolution. knowing that his intent is impeccable. There is a flaw with words. Everything is filled to the brim. in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. he goes his way. The average man is hooked to his fellow men. The warrior seeks impeccability in his own eyes and calls that hum bleness. That s the warrior s way. but at the same time. to lift off. but once he makes it. The self-confidence of the warrior is not the self-confidence of the average man . undetainable because he has nothing to lose . only because we talk to ourselves about its being such and such and so and so. The warrior low ers his head to no one. The beggar. In his last battle on earth a warrior lets his spirit flow fre e and clear. Freedom to dissolve. The trick is in what one emphasizes. on the other hand. he demands that someone lower than him scrape the floor for him. The warrior: silent in his struggle. A warrior may worry and think be fore making any decision. We either make ourselves miserable. what changed was his idea o f himself. There are lots of things a warrior can do at a certain time which he couldn t do y ears before. there will be a million other decisions still awaiting him. Those things themselves did not change.
It s better to get something worthwhile done using deception than to fail to get s omething worthwhile done using truth. an awareness encased here. I repeat this b . they don t demolish them. because we keep on repeating the same internal talk over and over until the day we die. Everything we do. Warriors do not win victories by beating their heads against walls. we uphold it with our internal talk. Only as a warrior can one withstand the path of knowledge. the world is always as it should be. In fact we maintain our world with our internal talk. His life is an endless challenge. like a dilettante seeking fast a nd fleeting knowledge. we rekindle it with life. No matter what he does. There s no way to put a limit on what one may accomplish individually if the inten t is an impeccable intent. If we don t have enough personal power the most magnificent piece of wisdom can be revealed to us and it won t make a damn bit of difference. Not only that. Challenges are simply challenges. cannot because he knows for a fact that the t otality of himself has but a little time on this earth. he must go all the way. in th e blink of an eye. and challenges cannot possibly be good or bad. Within these premises. but by overt aking the walls. rests on our personal power. Warriors jump over walls. can anything be verified absolute ly. We are a feeling. What decides everything is a conscious impersonal energy that sorcerers call intent or the Spirit. We hardly ever realize that we can cut anything out of our lives. because it never pretended to be more than what it is: a mere candle. anytime. A warrior is aware of this and strives to s top his internal talk. one is simply a pawn on the che ssboard. And whenever we finish talking to ourselves about oursel ves and our world. he must know first why he is doing it. The things that people do cannot under any conditions be more important than the world.intact. We talk to ourselves incessantly about our world. Nor. Impeccability is nothing else but the proper use of energy. the only thing one can be is an impeccable mediator. but we also c hoose our paths as we talk to ourselves. but he must take responsibility for what he does. Whenever a warrior decides to do something. When a warrior learns to stop the internal dialogue. One is not the player in this cosmic match of chess. An immortal being has all the time in the world for doubts and bewilderment and fears. the most far-fetched schemes become attainable. A warrior cannot comp lain or regret anything. We renew it. everything becomes possible . everything we are. Don Juan s teachings are not spiritual. The only thing we can do is arrive at a state of increased awareness that al lows us to perceive the world around us in a more inclusive manner. One cannot enter don Juan s world intellectually. A warrior. in don Juan s world. It doesn t matter what one reveals or what one keeps to oneself. on the other hand.
The idea of spiritual ity doesn t fit with the iron discipline of a warrior. For me there is only the traveling on the paths that have a heart. nor by thinking about w hat he will think when he has finished acting. He accepts in humbleness what he is. A warrior acts as if he knows what he is doing. and there will be no pitiful regrets over that. in fact. one may say w ithout being presumptuous that the experience of experiences is being alive. looking. and with absolute assurance. You must understand that knowledge cannot be turned into words. when in effect he knows nothing. not as grounds for regret but as a livi ng challenge. I wanted to convince you that you must learn to make every act count. One can only make use of it. The most important thing fo r a shaman like don Juan is the idea of pragmatism. If such a man fails. When a man has fulfilled all four of these requisites to be wide awake. Going to knowledge or going to war in any other man ner is a mistake. A man goes to knowledge as he goes to war: wide-awake.ecause the question has come to the surface over and over. but not to be explaine d. Life in itself is sufficient. What counts for a warrior is being alive. Our options are the way of the warrior. he will have lost only a battle. A warrior lives by acting.
The only thing that counts is action. It may tap you any moment. when he experiences a great peace and pleasure traversing its length. The countless paths one traverses in one s life are all equal. ju st like that. is to want to become a warrior. the birds. Oppressors and oppr essed meet at the end. The frightening nature of knowledge leaves one no alternative but to become a warri or. not as grounds for regret but as a livi ng challenge. Everything is meaningful for a warrior. It is th e consistent choice of the path with heart which makes a warrior different from the average man. Think of your death now. He knows that a path has heart when he is one with it. The world is incomprehensible. We won t ever understand it. He accepts in humbleness what he is. Nothing at all if w e want to drop them. Only one thing is indispensable for anything we do. It is at arm s length. and then he must proceed with his actions without having doubts or r emorse about them. he becomes aware. whatever it may be. all of them can tell us unimaginable things if speed to grasp their message. There is a strange consuming happiness in acting with the full kno wledge that whatever one is doing may very well be one s last act on earth. The sounds have s everything around you. No matter what he does. Th e first thing he ought to do. that the means of the ordinary world are no longer a buffer for him. None of us have time for that . and thus he goes through life without protection. a sheer mystery! Only as a warrior can one survive the path of knowledge. in a gradual man ner. at that point. and the only thing that prevails is that life was altoget her too short for both. For example. any time. so real ly you have no time for crappy thoughts and moods. acting instead of talking. that ordinary life has been forever left behind. he must know first why he i s doing it. A warrior takes his lot. Ordinarily a man does not have oles. we won t ever unravel it s secrets. because the art of a wa rrior is to balance the terror of being a man with the wonder of being a man. and that he must adopt a new way of life if he is going to survive. Thus we must treat it as it is. smoking and drinking are nothing.
If one is to succeed in anything. is to be aware of everything at all times. The control of a warrior has to be impeccable. or evil is to place an unwarranted importance on the self. The most difficult part about the warrior s way is to realize that the world is a feeling. The world is a mystery. To be a nagual. What s important from this point on is the strategy of yo ur life. A warrior should not have remorse for anything he has done. because to isolate o ne s acts as being mean. on the contrary. It is meaningless to complain. The future is only a way of talking. he s jo yful because he feels humbled by his great fortune. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the ver y last moment of our lives. A warrior cannot possibl y afford to do that. one is no longer ordinary. a warrio r may be seeing the devil himself. A man of knowledge cannot possibly act towards his fellow men in injurious terms . Never dwell on past events except in reference. It is not so difficult to let the spirit of man flow and take over. Thus. One of the acts of a warrior is never to let anything affect him. For a warrior there is onl y the here and now. an d one feels the world through its lines. There s no future. Thus the mood of a w arrior who enters into the unknown is not one of sadness. This. The world is such and such or so and s o. is not all there is to it. the condition of a warrior. so much more. fully aware of his efficiency. To be a warrior is not a simple matter o f wishing to be one. A warrior s joyfulness . A nagual man or woman is someone flexible enough to be anything. We make ourselves into one or the other. There is no flaw it the warrior s way. Assemble what you learn. To emphasize them would mean to take away from the importance of what s taking place now. The instant one begins to live like a warrior. You are aware of everything only when you think you should be. what you re looking at. confident that his spirit is impeccable. only because we talk to ourselves about its being such and such or so and so. A warrior acknowledges his pain but he doesn t indulge in it. Question without fear. without suspicion an d without draining yourself. The internal dialogue is what grounds us. among other things. but he won t let anyone know that. to sustain i t. in exactly the same way th at nobody is born a reasonable being.
