Sanders McCown Business Essentials 3. Call me maybe…but only if the price is right baby 90 minutes 2/22/2013
The purpose of this lesson is for students in teams to learn how to research pricing by monitoring high volume items sold on eBay. Additionally students will evaluate ads and from their own experience draw conclusions on what a successful ad entails. They can then compare what they thought would happen versus the data they collected.
How does the type of sale style (auction, buy it now) and price (starting bid, or buy it now price) effect business revenue? How does the price and duration of an ad affect consumer interest?
1. Students will be able to cooperatively define team goals by identifying each team member’s role and what they will be required to contribute to the team to a 80% degree of accuracy. (BCS-BE-5f) 2. Students will be able to use online databases, Web-based sources and other information sources to retrieve information by selecting a high volume product sold on eBay and recording the date, duration of the auction, number of bids, and final sales price to a 90% degree of accuracy. (BCSBE-7d) 3. Students will be able to describe pricing strategies by reviewing the data collected from eBay and identifying patterns and successful auctions to a 90% degree of accuracy. (BCS-BE-36d)

Next, I will open the auction up to the class with a starting bid of one penny. After conclusion of the first auction, I will produce a second Gatorade bottle for auction, but this time there will be a box in the front of the classroom where students will put their highest and best offer for the Gatorade bottle. I will also give them brief amount of time to use the internet to look up information about Gatorade bottles and prices. After the auctions have concluded the students will have a brief discussion around how they decided to bid and their bidding/pricing strategy they used to try and win the Gatorade bottle. The students will be informed that they will be working in groups to look at how to price items and the strategy behind pricing in the days lesson.
