On 16 April, Al-Masry Media Corporation, the publisher of Egypt Independent and Arabic newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm, informed the EI editorial team the publication was being shut down. The team worked on a final edition to inform its readers about the closure decision and the political and economic challenges of the media in a country that has a track record of state and self-censorship. However, the management stopped the edition from printing. We offer the issue here as an explanation of the circumstances of our closure.
