The Life of Pi I, you and Richard Parker

A man lying on the sand, half-covered by the furious waves. He looks desperately at a tiger, two steps in front of him. The animal is facing the jungle, as it toys with the thought of leaving the beach. He indeed leaves than man is heart-broken, he expected the tiger to look back. This is the kind of emotional experience The life of Pi makes you surpass. The ravashing screenplay, in fact an excellent adaptation of Yann Martels book, sinks in the depths of human dilemmas, the wandering eyes of the main character hid the curiosity of adventure and the ravashing images creates a persistent tension between our expectations and the particular evolution of the storyline. What makes this movie so special and why has it won four Oscar prizes? The question is a white elephant, as the English would say. This cinematic approach of faith and friendship is so spectacular as a whole that becomes pretty hard to describe all the constitutive elements one by one. Firstly, the visual effects are amazing. The breathtaking landscapes of India lasts in the imagination of the public, leaving a sense of enticing exotism and what is more, the dynamic image of the sea, either furios or still, makes the character appear as a mediator between God and nature. The sky is reflected in the water and through nowadays technology, you suddenly see the boat floating through the clouds, as a hidden thought, as a great hope, as a secret passion The visual impact is justified by the incredibile story the main character shares with the aspiring writer, a less important character that symbolizes each of us, an attentive listener, a conscience on which is projected the entire tale. This is the adventure of a child named after a pool that one day, finds himself alone in the middle of the sea, sharing his existence with a tiger, that wants to eat him up. The pressure to survive makes him transform his fear into power and this is the main reason Pi finds in the tiger, Richard Parker, a genuine companion. Beauty in the middle of danger is the laitmotif of the movie. What is more, the movie deals with scepticism and ignorance. After returning in the civilised society, Pi tries to shares all his adventure, but nobody believes him. It is thought to be too incredibile and people need stories that are accustomed. This truth, almost trivial, is transformed into a philosophical explanation: we can not believe in God because the sheer thought of Him inspires so much hope and happiness that we find it impossible. As impossible and unbelieving as this movie, a merry-go-round about the true nature of ourselves
