THE BOLAND BLUEPRINT

1. Foster School Spirit and Community Engagement

Welcome students back in January with a real Frost Week which would include Winterlympics (snow-shoeing, skating, snow dodgeball), concerts, movie screenings, and a Clubs Fair; Advocate for the creation of a Residence liaison position on the O-Week Student Steering Committee; Immediately start collaborating with Residence and the Student Life office to ensure that O-Week programming extends to residence during move-in weekend; Build on the success of “Got Talent?!”; Heavily promote one one unified campus calendar (SA, Campus Alliance, Student Life, Residence) and ensure that it is incredibly visible and easily accessible; Collaborate with the City of Oshawa to connect students with local volunteer-based organizations, community events, and local small businesses; Investigate the potential of establishing a Farmer’s Market on campus to promote local agriculture and to offer students quality produce;

2. Promote Sustainable Practices

Establish an environment-focused commission that advises the SA on environmental issues and seeks to collaborate with the institution and external organizations; Work with the commission to create a practical green events policy and procedure to ensure that SA operations and events are run in a sustainable manner; Celebrate Earth Day and World Water Day on campus; Set up a “Green Grants” program for campus clubs - grants will be issued to reward clubs for running events in an exceptionally sustainable manner; Encourage the institution to invest and reinvest in its public water supply infrastructure so that students have viable alternatives to bottled water products; Lobby for the implementation of a green big composting program in all campus cafeterias and the student centre; Have UOIT President Ron Bordessa and Durham College President Don Lovisa sign the University Presidents Climate Commitment;

3. Lobby for Improved Campus Services

Continue the ongoing talks with campus food services particularly focusing on inclusivity with cultural clubs; Propose that the SA seek opportunities to run a coexisting food service alternative like other university student unions, thereby giving our SA revenue; Work with Pride, the Women’s Centre, and the Diversity Office to see that a GLBTQ-focused service of the SA is established - the service would oversee the ongoing implementation of the Positive Space campaign; Lobby on behalf of students on issues pertaining to the student housing crisis in North Oshawa; Ensure that the safety of all students is a top priority (e.g. assert that all emergency poles on campus work, improve the visibility of Campus SafeWalk, etc).
