ECKS Dear M
Megan
Dear MECKS,
So many people tell me that I look like my dad. I don’t want to look like him! Why do I not look like my mom? Dear Megan, This is because of heredity. You look like your dad because his genes comes from your dad as well as your mom. We bet not everything about you looks like your dad. Maybe your height? Your strength? -MECKS

as anyone told you before that you look like your mother or father? This is because of heredity. Heredity is the passing of traits from the parents to their children. The genes for certain traits are passed down in families from parents to children. This has been known for thousands of years

What is heredity? Most cells in human body have 23 pairs of chromosomes thus making a total of 46. But, individual sperm and egg cells have 23 unpaired chromosomes. A child receives half of chromosomes from mother’s egg and the other half from the father’s sperm.

Dear MECKS,
My parents are very short but I am already the tallest of the class. Why am I so tall? Please answer MECKS. Dear Judy, These happen all the time. Maybe it is just because you are growing right now or maybe your grandparents are tall. Sometimes traits skip one generation or more. This has been proved by experiments with beans. - MECKS

Eye and Hair Colors
Brown is a dominant color in genes. This means that brown is usually stronger than the other colors. This means that it is a strong color in eyes as well. Brown beats all the other eye colors making it the most common eye color in the world. The next strongest is green, which means that it beats blue. This is the reason why your dad has green eyes; green eye color beats blue colors. But the reason why you got brown eyes is because your mom’s eye color was brown, which beat green.

The chart to show heredity is this:

S MECK Dear
Justin
Dear MECKS,
My little sister and me have very weird hair colors. Our parent’s hair colors are different. My mother’s hair color is blonde but my father’s is brown. Me and my sister both have brown hair but a little lighter than my dad’s. Why?

Dear Justin,

This means that there are 4 possibilities for the child to get. The capital T stands for a tall person and the lower-case t stands for a short person. This means taht the child could be TT, Tt, or tt.

Brown is a dominant color in genes. This means that brown is usually stronger than the other colors. We think this fact is the reason you and you sister have both brown hair. Just maybe the fact that your mother has blonde hair made your brown lighter, or that maybe your father used to have brown hair but it got darker as he grew. Have fun finding out! -MECKS

Samantha (Sam)
Dear MECKS,
My mom and I have the same eye color but my dad doesn’t. He has green eyes. I also found out that my grandpa has green eyes and my grandma has blue eyes but my dad got my grandpa’s green eyes. Why didn’t I get green eyes?

Thank you for reading our health newsletter! We hope you learned more about heredity! Please enjoy our next health newsletter!

Dear Sam,
If you have read the past column, you could tell that brown is a dominant color in genes. It might sound confusing but you’ll soon get it! -MECKS
