It is bettering the standard. not just at the end of a job.Follow Through Follow through is the secret weapon of the highly successful businessperson. There are those who listen. thoughtful.Don’t Complicate Matters Average people often complicate business matters because within those complications. Running a business is not complicated. you are a tough. You buy six properties. You listen. you can do.

After the novelty wears off. Suddenly updating the website is no longer a priority. 12 7 . It gets easy to overlook the smudges on outgoing correspondence.Commit to Never Ending Improvement It’s fun and exciting to plan and open a business but after a few months. average people quit and settle for mediocrity. You allow discontent among staff to fester. Ownership and management responsibilities are demanding. Perhaps several vendors should not have been so highly recommended. It’s seems a small fact that the flowers in the beds outside the office are dead. If you need to find new suppliers and new employees and new ways to promote your products or services. you are responsible for the energetic or toxic atmosphere in your workplace. For the extraordinary. You can’t yawn and shrug your shoulders. You are the boss. some customer interest will wane. With the slow creep of discouragement. second rate and quitting are not options. You maintain the standards. To keep to a steady course and strive toward excellence. you do that. Through your example. you may have to make improvements again and again. You attend to the details. reality starts to kick in. You don’t turn a blind eye to anything. Maybe the work ethics of some recruited staff do not match expectations.

You can eat in the company cafeteria. You make money by generating revenue and by looking for ways to reduce the unnecessary. Get everyone involved. Give yourself a day or two to consider the purchase and if you can still justify the item. You can fly coach. Don’t be impulsive. An effective manager sets the example for employees. Everyone should be engaged in looking for ways to cut costs and rewarded for sharing their suggestions. Corporate frugality is a team effort. You don’t need a private bathroom or reserved parking space. No one likes a cheap person. 8 13 . Think before you make major corporate purchases. then buy it knowing that you will use it. Everyone will accept a leader who sacrifices along with the troops for the good of all concerned. especially frivolity and waste.

You must never allow yourself to fall into a depressing rut of sameness. Life doesn’t just happen to you. If you want to generate additional business. You embrace hard work. you follow up with your old clients and make the effort to reconnect. today you will watch your diet and take a short walk. At the end of every day. If you have been neglecting your health. just do it.Make T oday Special You list and tackle your responsibilities head on. If you have been putting off making personnel changes. You have planned to make today and every day special. bring a rose home for the wife and a movie for the kids. you sleep well with a feeling of accomplishment. If an employee has done an exceptional job. You make yourself tough by doing something that is personally difficult for you to do. Every day. make the small effort to publicly praise him or her. Circle. you are probably still thinking about business. Your mind is focused on improving your business. Take some notes. You can’t help it. highlight. Have your paper and pen and pencil and marker available. When you aren’t at your desk working. What catches your eye? Is it the layout of an ad or a retail floor plan or a combination of words or colors? Is it a new piece of equipment or a website? What do you see that is efficient or smart or high tech? Record your thoughts You aren’t just a person of action. You are a thinking person of action. It is who you are.Record Your Thoughts You will have lots of ideas. Review your notes. underline. cross out and expand your thinking. Make a habit of writing them down. You are focused on success. You are exceptional. 10 15 . You are always alert and aware and your subconscious mind is always churning out new ideas and new possibilities for increasing income or decreasing expenses.

with patience and honest hard work. there is no doubt. After six miles you are tired. you are in pain. To walk ten miles. Of this. Take a deep breath. give up. Either way. you win. Get good. 16 11 . Any particular day may be tough and demand your best effort and concentration. You will never give up. However. You face a pile of papers on your desk. Or.Persist to Win You will be successful. Winners persevere and take another step. You have twenty emails to answer. suck it up and do it. It will never be over until you say that it is over. You make the first call. but you take another step. the rewards of persistence will burst forth or slowly emerge. You pick up the first paper and deal with it. Do it knowing that what you are about to do may advance your cause only slightly or have no effect at all. you take another step. After eight miles. You pick up the next paper. It would be easy to find an excuse to stop and few average people would blame you. You respond to the first email. You want to make ten cold calls today. you take a step and then a step. Be good. Keep trying.

They spend what they make and have little if anything saved for investment. It is difficult for them to concentrate on doing their jobs.In Business. you will find that workers are divided into three categories: 10. quits or dies. Take the risk. It isn’t always easy to try new things without proven guarantees. Find another job or start your own business You are alert and aware to opportunities. You love your job. They delude themselves into believing that big companies will always be there to protect them. the average majority would do it. Make an offer to buy the company. 18 13 . Get out now. often. They will cling to the perceived safety of the status quo. Your suggestions for corrective action are ignored.Risk Failure Average people are risk averse. Take the risk. many have learned otherwise. Sadly. to face the unknown. Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone may be difficult but it can also be exhilarating and profitable. The extraordinary person accepts the fact that the real economic protection for themselves. You don’t ignore the warning signs. Your boss at the flower shop announces that she will be retiring and selling the business. You are alert and aware to problems. Research. plan and then take the risk. Sales are dropping. everybody. their families and their futures lies in their self-reliance and. If it were easy. their willingness to change. You are working for a poorly performing company.

This is the wall. The world of business is not waiting anxiously for your amazing personal contribution. Get tough. Pay the price. You will lose a big deal. The time to prove yourself is at hand. 14 19 . clients or patients will switch to your competitors. Without whining. Climb over the wall. You need to climb over it. Others have gotten over that wall and you can learn from them. yes. This is the price that you are being asked to pay. And. Partners and employees may disappoint you. second guessing or complaining. Push over because all self-made successful people have been there. suck it up and do what you know you have to do to succeed in business. there will be other walls blocking your path. get ready and get tough. you might be passed over for promotion. You have hit the wall. You may bang your knees and skin your knuckles. So.

First. but for there to be growth. but also as it could and should be. Since you seek growth. Can you change your day and spend more time with your family? Can you change your standard lunch routine and take a walk? Can you volunteer to coach and mentor those behind you who are just learning the game? What are the possible consequences of not changing? Realize that many people don’t make plans because they don’t want to risk any change. You seek the changes necessary to reach the better you so that you can play your part in being a better sportsperson and role model. you change yourself. but then you will be a small person. there must be change. Doing little with your life is much easier and safer than taking risks.Be the Valued Employee The status quo may be comforting.
