Objectives: This course aims to introduce to you how to identify, analyze and report cost information to managers who can use it for strategy formulation, decision making and management control. It is user oriented because you need to understand the user’s needs if you are to serve the users effectively. Managers use cost information for planning and decision making, for economic evaluation of business activities, for product costing and for performance evaluation and control of subordinates. Besides “how to”, this course will often go beyond the textbook to ask the question why we adopt a certain technique and its usefulness. A major goal, therefore, is to develop knowledge of both relevance and limitations of accounting data to internal management and how to combine non-financial data with costs and other accounting information for decision making and control. Specifically, you will develop skills to prepare and interpret cost reports under different cost systems, understand how to evaluate information for their relevance for decision making, evaluate performance of a production system’s consumption of resources, use cost allocation methods for product costing and incentives reasons, and develop a rudimentary knowledge of management control systems. II. Structure of the Course and Pedagogy: This course builds significantly on the knowledge you acquired in the Introductory Managerial Accounting Course, B BUS 221. Therefore, you will do well to refresh your memory of the concepts and techniques you learned in that class. We will offer a brief review of those concepts and build upon those concepts and further develop our analysis based on those

Typically a good executive summary is written last. you should spend some time to identify the main issues and clearly outline the logic of your analysis by referring to the supporting tables and numbers that you would generate. a cogent recommendation of action is worth one point. the readability. You should review the questions and come prepared to discuss the questions presented in the syllabus. Finally. No submissions are needed for the video case. You may have the correct numbers. You should carefully prepare an executive summary (within 99 words) to summarize your analysis and recommendation. Analysis presented in the supplemental tables is worth one point. Each case analysis is worth 5 points. how much do you contribute to understanding. No matter what. correct numbers do not mean anything. The executive summary is not an introduction. You must present an analysis of the problem and explanation of the numbers and presentation of the inherent logic that is worth one point. Do not summarize the case facts. Are the points made relevant to the discussion and are they linked to the comments of 3 . but when you participate. Oftentimes you learn more from your peers than from any other source. VII. Not to summarize the case facts. Only one case write-up needs to be prepared per group. What is important is not how long or how frequent you participate. There are questions in the syllabus that should guide you towards your analysis although you are free to identify more pressing issues for the case. You are required to submit a written summary of the class discussion and your group’s critique on the proceedings on the next class meeting. On this count. You should come prepared to discuss the cases and keep a copy with you to facilitate discussions. Grading Rubrics for Case Analysis: A short and concise executive summary (99 words) is worth one point. It is the summary of your analysis. IX. Please keep a copy of the case write up with you so that you may participate in the class discussions. meaningful participation requires adequate preparations for the class. These recommendations should follow from your analysis and should clearly indicate why you are making the recommendation.
