The month of May brings us to a busy time of year. Warming temperatures and new growth may beacon us into the routines of gardening and physical exercise, but there’s more to May than our emergence from our winter cocoons. This is the month that we celebrate Mother’s Day (May 12). A less traditional, though growing recognition assigned to this date is called “The Festival of the Christian Home.” And then, of course, there’s Pentecost (May 19). This is the day we celebrate the birth of the Christian Church. Bring mom to worship. On Mother’s Day our mothers will receive a gift. Indeed, join us all month long and celebrate the love that God has for each one of us, and for all God’s children.

MAY 5, 2013
I am excited by the added potential that we have gained by subscribing to a new website provider. I don’t know all the appropriate lingo, but I do know that we have far greater potential to get our story told than we have had in recent years. The upgrade of new technology will enhance our evangelistic effort, and I am hopeful of a good result. In my address to the Leadership Team in April, I pontificated on the need we have for a twelve to eighteen month strategy for ministry. The plan in my head envisions a strong relationship with the YMCA, shared mission, flexibility and openness to new ideas, and a joyful heart. The website provides a tool for us to reach people. It is essential that we offer a message that touches upon the needs of people, and affirms them in welcoming ways. In this we will be challenged like a host or hostess preparing to receive people at a party. What happens when you invite some one for dinner? You clean house. You prepare the meal. You make sure everyone is made welcome, that there is room for all. It is no different for the church. All the little things that so often get left undone because we have grown accustomed to the way things are must be revisited. This is a form of ministry. Taking care of church appearance: dust and clutter, pews with torn padding, weeds growing in flower beds, all of this is important. It reflects our spiritual health. I have a plan for growing my spiritual health. There are times when I must do something about the dust and clutter in my own life. If you find that this is true for you, then you must also know that this is true for the church. We are God’s people. We have a message to share. We have hope to hand out. I am thankful for the role I play in the life of Union Church, and I thank God for each of you, and for the blessing that you are. —Pastor Randy Heckman

LEADERSHIP TEAM HIGHLIGHTS
APRIL 28 MEETING
A new web design & web service has been approved. Cooperation in mission with the YMCA has been approved. We are researching the need to purchase two new computers for the lab. We will ask the YMCA to identify potential computer teachers who may assist in identifying what we will need for upgrades. One possibility is to swap the computer lab and chimes room with the nursery Gifts for Mothers Day and Fathers Day are being procured. Kitchen and social hall floor needs stripping and waxing. We are researching the possibilities. Yard Sale is scheduled for August 3. Worship pews are in need of upholstery and varnish. We are researching the potential cost of this renovation against the cost of removing the pews for chairs.
CWS EMERGENCY CLEANUP BUCKETS
We are busy assembling Emergency Cleanup Buckets to assist people in the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood, hurricane, tornado, or other disaster here in the United States. Buckets will be collected at our Fall Western Association gathering for delivery in November. Items that go into each cleanup bucket include:
five scouring pads seven sponges of assorted sizes one scrub brush eighteen cleaning towels (reusable, like Easy Wipes) one 50-78 oz. box dry laundry detergent one 12 oz. bottle of liquid concentrated household cleaner (like Lysol) one package of 48-50 clothespins clothesline, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft. five dust masks two pairs work gloves 28-bag roll of heavy-duty trash bags (30-45 gallon) one 6-9 oz. bottle of insect repellent (pump, drops or lotion, not aerosol)
Any of the items listed above will be welcome. If we do not have the right ingredients for a complete bucket, we will send what we have collected.
SUMMER MEAL PROGRAM
Union Church will partner with the Two Rivers YMCA this summer in what we hope will produce a growing collaboration in ministry. In cooperation with Peace United Church of Christ, Rock Island, we will serve as a meal site for the YMCA, feeding hot meals to children from 11AM to Noon on Monday through Thursday beginning in June. Our church yard will also be used by the YMCA for soccer practice on Wednesday afternoons. These programs will replace the Friday meal program that we attempted last summer. We are at the planning stage. The YMCA will provide clean-up, and perhaps partial yard service and other service projects that summer campers may perform. This shared mission will benefit our community and help us to fulfill Christ’s command to love. To Christ be the glory!
