2 | MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California — May 5, 2013

As most of you know, the retrofit of the Historic Mission Church was supposed to be finished in January. Now it’s May and the Historic Church is s ll not open. All of us are NOT happy. The actual retrofit was finished on schedule in January, but then because of some cost savings, it was decided to put in new light, security and sound systems. These three addi ons have taken an enormous amount of me. You just can't go down to the local hardware store and buy ligh ng fixtures for a historic church. Then to top it off, when they took the pews out and filled the building with scaffolding, they discovered cracks in the arches suppor ng the dome. We had to call in a structural engineer and these problems were taken care of, but it delayed everything even longer. I have now been told that I can count on a definite date for reopening the Historic Church: Saturday, June 15th 2013. Now, if some other problem arises and they are s ll not finished, I am opening the doors anyway. Let us hope we are not all si ng on folding chairs in the dark when the Church reopens. Please know that I am just as frustrated as you that this project has taken so much addi onal me, but I’m a person of hope and I actually believe we will be open on June 15th. Thank you for your pa ence and understanding. The historic church is a living part of our parish and I will be very happy when we can use it for liturgies and prayer. I’d also like to publicly thank Mike Pollack for his reless efforts and leadership on the retrofit project, as well as all those who contributed their me, talent and treasure to ensuring the Historic Mission Church will con nue to serve our community for many years to come. This week, I'd also like to give you an update on our Annual Catholic Appeal. This annual appeal from the Diocese supports many ac vi es and programs in our community. Some examples are the Marriage and Family Life Ministry, Office of Cateche cal Ministry, Religious Voca on Outreach and Catholic Chari es that provide hope to those in need. Giving to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps us be in solidarity with the poor and less fortunate in our community. I am very pleased and happy to tell you that collec vely as a parish, we have reached our goal of

$64,000. This goal includes not only the payments already made, but the pledges and online payments that are ongoing. I appreciate all of those who have donated already, and those of you who made pledges and con nue to make payments on your pledges. If you have any ques ons, please contact our new bookkeeper, Elizabeth Rose at 760-547-0711. I am really proud that we have met this goal. Even while we some mes struggle financially, it's important that we con nue to par cipate in the mission and work of the greater church. During this Easter Season, may you and your family con nue to experience the joy and blessings of the Resurrected Christ.

My Soul Magnifies the Lord—By Jeanne Kun “This excellently cra ed, biblically based portrait of Mary will warm the hearts of those who have long known her and those who wonder who she is. Per nent commentary on the Marian Scripture texts and probing ques ons that explore the theme coupled with fine poetry and the wisdom of various Marian writers all contribute to a study of Mary that is ideal for personal reflec on as well as for use in RCIA and parish enrichment programs.” [Sr. M. May 5, 2013 - Sixth Sunday of Easter | 7

Nosotros no estamos contentos.
