Hymn of Praise
LOVE LIFTED ME
I was sinking deep in sin, Far from The peaceful shore, Very deeply stained Within, sinking to rise no more; But the Master of the sea heard my Despairing cry, from the waters lifted me - now safe am I.

Unison Scripture
John 5:1-9 (NRSV)
After this there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes. 3 In these lay many invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed waiting for the stirring of the water; 4for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred up the water; whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made well from whatever disease that person had. 5One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk.

Verse 1

Love lifted me, love lifted me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me. Love lifted me, love lifted me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me.

Chorus

All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I’ll cling; in His blessed presence live, Ever His praises sing. Love so mighty And so true merits my soul’s best songs; Faithful, loving service too, To Him belongs.

Verse 2

Souls in danger, look above, Jesus Completely saves; He will lift you By His love out of the angry waves. He’s the Master of the sea, billows His Will obey; He your Savior wants to be – Be saved today.

Verse 3

Now that day was a sabbath.

Confession of Sins
Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You. Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You.
CONFESSION OF SINS

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives. We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed – even our own Black brothers and sisters! Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your Name the praise forevermore. ****** To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who are friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming, and may God bless you.

Stewardship Tithing Litany
Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Congregation: Minister: Together: Tithing is the biblical principle of returning 10% to God first. The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Debt is a spiritual issue. We are robbing God’s people when we live beyond our means, refuse to budget, invest, save, and tithe; we are seduced by debt. The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is Mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers. Tithing, budgeting, and stewardship are the solutions to the spiritual problem of debt. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. Debt is fed by the desire for immediate gratification, poor planning, and the need to keep up appearances. His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ Tithing, saving, budgeting, and good stewardship of resources is the calling of all Christians. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Debt slavery has been used since 1863 to prevent people of African descent from gaining power and independence. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Our ancestors were forced into slavery. Today, we volunteer to be enslaved by debt and we mortgage our children’s future.

O God, we have been called to be a debt-free congregation. We are called to teach our community, children, and grandchildren the discipline of tithing, the power of budgeting, the blessing of saving, and the benefit of investing. We desire to live debt-free because it honors God and our ancestors, who died not for debt, but that we may live free with our God. Amen.

BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Wangari Maathai (1940-2011) was the founder of the Green Belt
Movement and the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. She authored four books: The Green Belt Movement; Unbowed: A Memoir; The Challenge for Africa; and Replenishing the Earth. As well as having been featured in a number of books, she and the Green Belt Movement were the subject of a documentary film, Taking Root: the Vision of Wangari Maathai (Marlboro Productions, 2008).

Dr. Maathai was born in Nyeri, a rural area of Kenya (Africa), and obtained a degree in Biological Sciences from Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas (1964), a Master of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh (1966), and pursued doctoral studies in Germany and the University of Nairobi, before obtaining a Ph.D. (1971) from the University of Nairobi, where she also taught veterinary anatomy. Dr. Maathai was active in the National Council of Women of Kenya and served as its chair for six years. In 1976, while serving in the National Council of Women, she introduced the idea of community-based tree planting. Dr. Maathai continued to develop this idea into a broad-based grassroots organization, the Green Belt Movement (GBM), whose main focus is poverty reduction and environmental conservation through tree planting. Dr. Maathai was internationally acknowledged for her struggle for democracy, human rights, and environmental conservation, and served on the board of many organizations. She addressed the UN on a number of occasions and spoke on behalf of women at special sessions of the General Assembly during the five-year review of the Earth Summit. She served on the Commission for Global Governance and the Commission on the Future. In September of 2007, Trinity United Church of Christ welcomed Maathai and hosted a book signing of her then-released book, “Unbowed: A Memoir.” In 2000, the members of Trinity UCC joined Dr. Maathai in the Jubilee 2000 Campaign, an international coalition movement in over 40 countries, launched by Amnesty International, that called for cancellation of third world debt by the year 2000. The countries that were severely “punished” by the Cold War debt were sub-Saharan African countries. Dr. Maathai’s beloved Kenya in over 40 countries, is one of those countries.

As we journey into Week 5 of the Mission 4/1 Earth: 50 Great Days campaign, the Trinity UCC congregation has contributed 6,946 Earth Care hours, recycled 5,421 bulletins and signed more than 1,000 advocacy letters. Keep it up Trinity UCC! This week’s focus is Earth Care. Remember to record the hours YOU spend on the action items below. YOU can report your hours online at the new Mission 4/1 Earth website: http://tinyurl.com/tuccmission41earth Week 5 – Earth Care Why should YOU care? Why we can’t afford to ignore this topic: • Global warming is causing a rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere, affecting a greater occurrence of extreme-weather events, such as droughts and heavy rainfalls • Trees are vital to the health of our environment and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, providing cleaner air and cooler temperatures. Did YOU know that: • Trees reduce soil erosion and slow storm water run off • Trees produce oxygen which helps us breathe • In our native Africa, trees such as the baobab are considered sacred Action items for YOU to do to contribute to Earth Care hours: • Learn about trees native to Illinois and YOUR community • Engage in tree-planting in YOUR community • Read By Any Green Necessary about Kenyan Professor Wangari Maathai’s contributions • Donate $1.00 and plant a tree in Kaiguchu Village in Kenya* *Village tree-planting in Kenya The Green Belt Movement (GBM) was founded by Kenyan Professor Wangari Maathai in 1977 to respond to the needs of rural women. The women in the village of Kaiguchu, who depend for their living on the income from tree planting, look to tree planting as an essential means of support for children orphaned by AIDS for whom they are guardians. Guilford Community UCC (Guilford, Vermont) and the Kaiguchu GBM Youth Group have worked together since 2006 to support these women and children. All trees are planted by orphans and their guardians and go to prevent erosion and provide income, firewood and shelter. Cost per tree: $1. With the Supreme Court's current interest in the Voting Rights Act of 1965, learn of the man who played a role in its enaction.

CALLED TO THE FIRE: A WITNESS FOR GOD IN MISSISSIPPI
The Story of Dr. Charles Johnson
The last place on earth young Charles Johnson wanted to go was Mississippi during the heat of the civil rights movement. As the key African American witness to take the stand in the trial famously dubbed the "Mississippi Burning" case by the FBI, Dr. Charles Johnson, a young preacher fresh out of Bible College, became a voice for justice and equality in the segregated south. Unwittingly thrust into the heart of a national tragedy - the murder of three civil rights activists - Dr. Johnson overcame fear and adversity to become a leader in the civil rights movement. He played a vital role for the Federal Justice Department, offering clarity to the event that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

RAISING LEADERS and DEVELOPING DISCIPLES
January • Matthew 16:24 (NLT) Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me." February • Luke 4:18-19 (NIV) The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. March • Luke 10:19 (NIV) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. April • Romans 10:1-2 (NLT) Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. May • 1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV) Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. June • Romans 5:8 (NIV) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. July • Philippians 4:13 (NLT) For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. August • Jeremiah 1-7 (NLT) The Lord replied, “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you." September • Isaiah 1:3 (NLT) Even an ox knows its owner, and a donkey recognizes its master’s care—but Israel doesn’t know its master. My people don’t recognize my care for them. October • Isaiah 40:29 (KJV) He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. November • John 17:21 (KJV) That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. December • Matthew 1:23 (KJV) Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
