TO BE LIKE THE JONES'

Lesson Text: 1 Samuel 8:4-22


I. Introduction
A. Everyone wants to be like Mike
1. Athletic, rich, famous, etc.
2. Athletes make it look easy
3. TV’s, Cars, Washer Dryers, Houses, etc.
B. We should be careful who we imitate
1. Athletes are not reliable role models
2. Men will let you down
C. Read 1 Samuel 8:4-9
II.Like Everyone Else; 1 Sam. 8:5
A. We all want to fit in
1. Name brand clothes, shoes, hairstyle, etc.
2. Many no longer think for themselves (majority rules)
B. Our standards should be higher
1. Majority not always right – if everybody jumped off a cliff
2. Small groups come from flawed logic
3. Morality is not changed because majority changes
4. Read Romans 12:2, 6-21
C. We reject God if we turn to the world; 1 Sam. 8:6-8
1. Samuel felt reject – your old
2. Wisdom in those advance in age – Samuel was displeased
3. Actually they rejected God
4. Romans 8:20 ESV For the creation was subjected to futility, not
willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope
5. John 15:18-19 ESV "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me
before it hated you. (19) If you were of the world, the world would love
you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out
of the world, therefore the world hates you.
6. James 4:4 ESV You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship
with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a
friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
III. The Traits of your King
A. Sometimes we do not know what is best for ourselves.
1. Co-workers kids with grandparents at Ryan’s ice cream machine
2. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks – as adult we deceive ourselves
3. Read Luke 13:1-5
4. Proverbs 14:12 ESV There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end
is the way to death.
5. Jeremiah 17:9 ESV The heart is deceitful above all things, and
desperately sick; who can understand it?
6. 2 Timothy 3:16 ESV All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable
for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in
righteousness,
B. God warned them; 1 Sam. 8:9
1. Read 1 Sam. 8:10-18
2. The King will take your sons; 1 Sam. 8:11
3. Take your daughters; 1 Sam. 8:13
4. Take the best of your fields; 1 Sam. 8:14
5. Take a tenth of your grain & vineyards; 1 Sam. 8:15
6. Take your servants; 1 Sam. 8:16
7. A tenth of your flocks & you will be slaves; 1 Sam. 8:17
8. And God will not answer you in that day; 1 Sam. 8:18
C. God was right
1. God warns us today
2. 2 Corinthians 6:14 ESV Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For
what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship
has light with darkness?
3. God is right today; Heb. 6:18 (Impossible for God to lie!)
IV.Ignoring the Truth
1. After all that Samuel said, they still wanted a king; Read 1 Sam. 8:19-22
2. They still wanted to be like the Jones'; 1 Sam. 8:20
3. God allows you to make your own choices; 1 Sam. 8:21,22
4. 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 ESV ThereforeGod sends them a strong
delusion, so that they may believe what is false, (12) in order that all
may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in
unrighteousness.
B. Israel suffered at the hand of a king
1. Kings would lead the Nation to apostasy
2. The Jews wanted an earthly king
C. Jesus should be our King of kings
1. Revelation 17:14 ESV They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will
conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with
him are called and chosen and faithful."
2. Suffering lies ahead to those who want other kings.
