Inrecentyears,investmentsinICThaveskyrocketed.InCanadaalone, ICTinvestmentperworkerhasrisenfrom$385in1980to$2,338in 2008,forgrowthofmorethan507%(source:CSLS).Informationand communicationstechnologiesaremuchmorethaninvestmentin physicalhardware,however. ICTinfrastructureisasetoftoolsusedtosupportinternalandexternal communications,shareinformationandcarryoutplanninginan organization. Inconcretetermsitconsistsoftwoelements:thefirstcombines technicalinfrastructure,i.e.software,hardware,networksandallother tangibleICTresources.Thiselementisdeterminedbytheextensibility, connectivityandcompatibilityofICTinfrastructure. Thesecondelementcomprisesthebusinessinfrastructure:the organizationsknowledgeandskillswhenitcomestomanagingitsICT. ThissecondcomponentofICTinfrastructurereferstothemanagement ofdataandinformation,theorganizationalarchitectureandskillsofits ICTstaff. ThefigureshowsthepositioningofdifferentcompaniesintermsofICT infrastructure,accordingtotheirbusinessstrategy.Itclearlyshowsthat Reactorsarethosewiththeweakestinfrastructure.Attheotherendof thescale,ProspectorsandDefendershavethestrongestpositioning.
