First State becomes 11th to
legalize same-sex marriage

Delaware this week joined 10 other states and
Washington, D.C. in legalizing same-sex marriage,
continuing a string of victories for marriage
advocates that began in November.
The Delaware Senate on Tuesday narrowly
approved a bill that will allow same-sex marriage in
the First State. The 12-9 vote came more than three
hours after lawmakers began to hear testimony
from House Bill 75 supporters and opponents.
Sen. Karen Peterson (D-Stanton) came out as a
lesbian while speaking in support of House Bill 75.
We are not seeking to redene marriage, she
said, noting she and her partner of more than 20
years entered into a civil union once the states civil
unions law took effect in January 2012. We are
seeking to expand the denition of marriage just as
the Supreme Court did in the Loving v. Virginia case.

Lifelong D.C. residents death prompts

T.H.E. hit by IRS tax liens,
possible suspension
of city funds

Transgender Health Empowerment, a
non-prot group that has provided a wide
range of services for D.C.s transgender
community for more than a decade, is
struggling with a nancial crisis that has
prevented it from paying its employees
on time and has triggered staff layoffs
and resignations, according to multiple
sources familiar with the organization.
Public records at the D.C. Recorder of
Deeds ofce show that the IRS led at
least 10 liens against THE over the past
three-and-a-half years. Most are due to
THEs failure to pay employee payroll
taxes, the records show.
Sources familiar with the situation
say the liens prompted the D.C.
Department of Health to suspend
some or all of its funding for THE for
HIV/AIDS-related services. The funding
suspension reportedly was triggered
by a procurement rule that restricts city
funding for vendors or contractors that
are in violation of the law, including
federal tax law, the sources said.
A former THE employee and current
client said they each were told by THE
staffers that a delay in city funding forced
the group to cut back on its drop-in
services at its headquarters at 1414 North
Capitol Street, N.W., and to limit services
to clients by appointment only.
The whole month of March we
didnt get a paycheck, said the former
employee, who was laid off in April
because of THEs nancial problems,
the former employee told the Blade.
Among THE employees not getting
paid or getting paid late are THE
ofcial and longtime transgender
activist Earline Budd, THE Director
of Programs Brian Watson, and
transgender activist Jeri Hughes,
sources familiar with the group said.
Top ofcials with THE and the
Department of Health have not
responded to repeated requests by the
Blade for information about the cause
of THEs nancial problems and the
status of city funding for the group.
At this particular time, theres no
comment, Brian Devine, THEs nance
manager, told the Blade. Devine said
THE Executive Director Anthony Hall
also had no comment.
We just had a board meeting and
that was one of the issues we spoke
of, said Devine, adding that the board
decided not to issue a statement about
the situation at the present time.
DOH spokesperson Najma Roberts
said she would make inquiries about
the THE funding status when contacted
by the Blade last week. As of press time
this week she had not responded.
The Blade led a Freedom of
Information Act request with the DOH
deputy general counsel, Phillip Husband,
on April 3 seeking the information that the
department has yet to release through
Roberts, the press spokesperson.
Husband said the department usually
takes up to 15 business days to respond
to a FOIA request.
My biggest concern is THEs
clients, said transgender activist Ruby
Corado, director of Casa Ruby, an
LGBT community center in Columbia
Heights that caters to the Latino and
transgender communities.
Corado said some of THEs clients
have been coming to Casa Ruby after
being told that THEs drop in center had
curtailed its services.
Corado and other transgender activists
called THE the D.C. areas preeminent
service provider and advocate for the
transgender community.
They note that THE also operates the
citys only housing facility dedicated
to homeless LGBT youth. The facility
known as the Wanda Alston House
has been nationally recognized as an
innovative resource for LGBT youth that
offers counseling, employment and
vocational training, and other services.
Among THE programs funded by DOH
is its highly acclaimed Comprehensive
Risk Counseling Services or CRSC
program, which offers risk reduction
interventions for preventing HIV
infection among transgender people,
especially transgender women, whom
experts say are at high risk for HIV. THE
also offers HIV testing and counseling.
THE is a transgender institution for
D.C., Corado said. There are a lot of
people counting on its services, especially
those living with HIV. It is an organization
that cannot go away, she said.
So the question I have is what is
the Department of Health doing about
this, Corado said. Why arent they
talking about what happens to those
clients? Are those clients OK?

TRAVIS RICE, 27
Travis A. Rice, who worked in gay bars in both Baltimore and D.C., died May
3 in Baltimore. He was 27. The cause of death was not immediately available.
He was born Feb. 24, 1986 in Chambersburg, Pa., attended Spring Grove
High School and graduated from York County High School. He was a swimmer
since the age of 6, and swam on the varsity team in high school. A licensed
scuba diver, he dove in the Florida Keys and off the coast of Mexico. Rice
loved animals, especially his canine companion, Abby.
Rice moved to Baltimore for a period of time then to D.C. where he became
a bartender and assistant manager at Cobalt. He returned to Baltimore two
years ago where he worked as a bartender and then as assistant general
manager at Grand Central.
His Facebook page quickly turned into a memorial as hundreds of
comments expressing love and photos were posted on the day of his death
alone. Several video tributes to Rice were also posted.
I never really got a chance to know Travis for the two years that he worked
at Grand Central as my general manager assistant, said Don Davis, the
owner of the club who now lives in Ft. Lauderdale. Every time that I did get
to Baltimore, Travis was always a real gentleman. I know he will be greatly
missed by his many friends and family.
Wendy Fox, owner of S.H.E. Productions, which produces events at Grand
Central, was a close friend who worked with Rice. Travis touched lives and
hearts of so many people and will never be forgotten, she said. I am
inspired to always treat people with respect, warmth and with open arms as
he did daily. This is a tremendous loss for the Baltimore and D.C. community
and we are heartbroken.
Rice is survived by his father, Wayne B. Rice and companion Carol Myers
of McSherrystown, Pa.; his mother Rebecca E. (Wentz) Rice and companion
Allen Huff of Codorus, Pa.; his brother Matthew J. Rice of Codorus, Pa.; half
sister, Trisha Tribby; paternal grandfather Fred E. Wentz and paternal great
grandfather Russell A. Wentz; and step siblings Brian and Kelly Myers. He is
also survived by many aunts, cousins, including special cousins Annie and Levi.
A service to celebrate and remember Rices life was held Tuesday with Rev.
Bonnie Wittier ofciating. Burial was in York Road Cemetery, Hanover, Pa.

A celebration of his life was scheduled to be held at Grand Central, 1001 N.
Charles St. in Baltimore on May 9. Memorial contributions in Rices memory may

EDITORS NOTE: This is the third installment in our Back To
School series assessing the LGBT climate on university cam-
puses as told by alumni were pairing with current students to tell
their stories. This week: Fay Jacobs and American University. Visit

On May 4, 1970, when the tragedy at Kent State burst
onto the screen, Neil Young wrote the unforgettable
anti-war lyrics Tin soldiers and Nixons coming. Fay
Jacobs, a senior at American University was accustomed
to participating in anti-war rallies on campus in front of
the Mary Graydon Center. The news came only twice
daily back then broadcast on console TVs the size of
todays Mini Cooper. But the pot boiled over the next
day on Cinco de Mayo with AU students protesting
more vociferously than ever. Typically, the protests
were handled by campus police, but this time, the D.C.
police showed up with noxious tear gas.
Jacobs was in rehearsal for a French Operetta in the
campus theater. When the tear gas missed the activists
and landed on the steps of the theater, the actors,
singers, musicians and men in tights all went running
in different directions.
I hid in the bushes with my pal Rob, she recalls. It
was all very frightening. Except for the guys in tights
running amok. Come on, thats funny.
Youd expect nothing less from a renowned comedy
writer whos published two books: As I Lay Frying
and Fried and True a woman whose favorite
movie was Funny Girl and whose father taught her
that no experience should be considered bad if you
can tell a good story about it later. And so we sit to
talk about her experiences at AU back in the day and
the trek that brought her out of the closet and into the
bright light of lesbianism.
It would be decades before Melissa Etheridge would
walk across re for another woman. So, like most of
us in those days without visible gays, Jacobs focused
on textbooks and the bard, lived isolated in the closet,
conforming to hetero ideals and dated men.
Her focus was on politics and social justice. Long
before RFK was a stadium named in memoriam, she
campaigned for Robert F. Kennedy, the man. She vividly
recalls the candlelight vigil the night Martin Luther
King, Jr. was murdered. And the many war protests. She
could wage a full-throated protest against the war but
remain mute about the war within. It was just too risky.
Her own struggle for authenticity would be deferred
for a decade, until after she graduated and kicked
down the closet door.
AU senior Salina Rivera stands on the same steps of
Mary Graydon Center 43 years later and points north.
My girlfriend and I live about a ve-minute walk that
way, she says. Ironically, its not far from where Jacobs
closet was. Out since age 13, and so grateful for her
loving parents, shes only sorry that her father died
before she could tell him.
He was a corrections ofcer in that male-dominated
environment, and yet he never made me feel odd for
being the Tom Boy, Rivera said. We always played
basketball together. I know hed understand me. After
his untimely death, her mother carried the torch of
accepting parent and is, today, Riveras straight hero. I
have never met a stronger, more loving person.
With such solid loving support, the Bronx
native blossomed. She was class president in high
school and today she is proud to be one of seven
founding sisters of AUs chapter of the lesbian Gamma
Rho Lambda sorority one of ve LGBTQ organizations
on campus. Her queer peers can join other active
organizations and have access to Safe Space 2.0 and
a course named Trans 101. She and her girlfriend
attend campus events together usually rallies for
social justice. Holding hands. Ho hum. Its hard to
believe students were ever in the closet here at AU,
Rivera said. Its so progressive and inclusive today, but I
realize its a privilege not to be taken lightly.

Alumni Association, and a straight ally agreed.
As a student in the 80s, I watched in awe this
year as the campus greeted the coming out of their
immediate past president of student government as
a transgender person with a collective, supportive
shrug. I see the amazing work that the entire division
of Student Life does to support everyone from rst-
generation college attendees to students celebrating
their cultural, ethnic and sexual identities, and it makes
me incredibly proud to be a part of something so
wonderful and so important.
In hindsight, Jacobs life blossomed quickly after
she came out. Shes not at all bitter about the late
start in life and that in her 31st year, it was time to
write her own story. Today shes driving back to her
home in Rehoboth Beach from Dover, Del., where
shes celebrating the movement toward marriage
equality with her straight hero, Delaware Gov. Jack
Markell. Shes a local celebrity in Rehoboth. Her zany
wife Bonnie is the love of her life and the subject of
many of her regular columns in Letters from CAMP
Rehoboth. From their madcap adventures in the RV, to
their frequent visits to the ER, Jacobs chronicles their
hysterical antics.
It wasnt always a bed of roses for Jacobs. Shortly
after graduation she married Bob, a classmate,
who made a living playing the accordion. It wasnt
long before they both knew something was amiss. I
ask if they got together after the break up to watch
Lawrence Welk, where accordions ruled.
No, I moved on, man-free and accordion-less.
Barbara Gittings, the lesbian activist who picketed
the White House in 1967 and founded Daughters of
Bilitis, is her gay hero.
She was relentless, brave, determined and most
importantly, a heck of a lot of fun, Jacobs said. Pre-
Stonewall, Barbara was one of several brave souls
that demonstrated each year on the Fourth of July
in Philadelphia. Asked about her gay hero, Rivera
thinks for a moment and then points to the ofce
of the coordinator of the LGBTQ Center where
we are chatting: It would be Matt Bruno. Hes
unbelievable. Whether its help with a cover letter or a
ght with my girlfriend, hes always there for me.
The Center of campus has an interesting story. Mary
Graydon was a generous benefactor of AU until
her death in 1926. Shes famous for focusing on the
education of women, once saying, I prefer to put
money into brains rather than stone and mortar.
And so after many years of supporting womens
academics, the university honored her with stone and
mortar. Her famous building is considered the center
of campus and houses our LGBTQ Center.
Salina is reading Jacobs current column about how
tiring the marriage ght is when youre 60 something.
I think Fay needs to come here and put her feet up
and let us do some of the heavy lifting now, Rivera
said. She is planning to host Jacobs for a reading of her
short stories in the LGBTQ Center this fall. Time has
moved on. Jacobs graduated and came out. Nixons
long gone. Tin soldiers include LGBT citizens. Nixon
once lamented that you cant appreciate the view
from the mountaintop until youve been in the darkest
valley. For entirely different reasons, Jacobs can relate.
So, hosted by Rivera and her queer peers, Jacobs
can prop her feet up on Matts desk in a center that
didnt exist in her day. Holding her wifes hand, she
will read aloud her AU/GayU retrospective: The tear
gas was scary. I hid in the bushes for the riot and in the
closet by necessity. But there were these men in tights
running hither and yon and somehow I knew this story
would be funny one day.
Jacobs dad would be proud of her nding a good
story in this. Mary Graydons investment in the brain
trust of AUs women has paid off in both gray matter
and stone and mortar. We will tell our own stories from
an LGBTQ Center.

Patchwork of laws
detrimental to children

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) is leading
a group of lawmakers in the House and
Senate who are preparing to introduce
legislation that would prohibit bias in
adoption services against gay couples.
The legislation, known as the Every
Child Deserves a Family Act, would
restrict federal funds for public child
welfare agencies if they have laws or
practices allowing for discrimination
in adoption on the basis of marital
status, sexual orientation or gender
identity. The bill would also prohibit
discrimination against LGBT children
seeking families.
Gillibrand emphasized the importance
of the legislation on Tuesday during a news
conference on Capitol Hill as a means to
ensure LGBT families seeking to adopt can
do so without fear of discrimination.
As Gillibrand noted, no state laws
protect LGBT families seeking to adopt
in more than 30 states, although six
states California, Massachusetts, New
Jersey, Rhode Island, Wisconsin and
Oregon explicitly ban discrimination
in adoption based on sexual orientation.
This patchwork of state laws often
leave our children across the country
without the opportunity for a safe home
and loving parents, Gillibrand said.
Meanwhile, theres an untapped pool
of 2 million LGBT people, people who
are willing to become adoptive or foster
parents, according to the Williams
Institute at UCLA.
According to Gillibrands ofce, an
estimated 400,000 children in the U.S.
foster care system nationwide, and more
than 104,000 children are waiting to be
adopted, including 6,400 in New York.
In the House, the lead sponsor of the
legislation is Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.),
whos taking over the bill along with
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) now
that its former patron, former Rep. Pete
Stark, has retired from Congress.
Ive fought too long and too hard
against discrimination of every kind not
to serve as a champion for this bill,
Lewis said. Foster children are innocent
bystanders when troubled families crash
and burn. The foster care system does
its best to rescue these little babies from
the ames of abuse neglect, drug
addiction, domestic violence and some
of societys worst problems.
Among the chief LGBT organizations
behind the legislation is the Family
Equality Council. Emily Hecht-
McGowan, the Family Equality Councils
director of public policy, issued a
statement saying the bill is important to
nd loving homes for children.
Our country has an obligation to care
for its most vulnerable children, and we
can do better for the 104,000 youth in
foster care who are searching for a home,
Hecht-McGowan said. The time has
come to x the patchwork of adoption
and foster care laws across the country
and ensure that young people in care have
every opportunity to nd a forever home.
The legislation wasnt introduced on
the same day as the news conference.
Steve Majors, a spokesperson for the
Family Equality Council, said a Dear
Colleague letter went out on Tuesday
asking lawmakers to sign on in support
of the bill in anticipation of introduction
at later date.
Pa. lawmakers introduce non-discrimination bill
HARRISBURG, Pa. Pennsylvania lawmakers on Tuesday introduced a bill
that would ban anti-LGBT discrimination in employment, housing and public
accommodations in the commonwealth.
Gay state Rep. Brian Sims (D-Philadelphia) co-sponsored the Pennsylvania Non-
Discrimination Act alongside state Reps. Dan Frankel (D-Pittsburgh) and Chris
Ross (R-Kennett Square) and state Sens. Daylin Leach (D-Wayne,) Larry Farnese
(D-Philadelphia) and Pat Browne (R-Allentown) in their respective chambers.
Ive been prepping for this, like many of my colleagues, for a long time,
Sims said.
Philadelphia Weekly reported state Rep. Mike Fleck (R-Three Springs,) who
came out as gay late last year, also attended the Harrisburg press conference
at which Sims and other legislators formally introduced the bill.
Illinois GOP chair resigns
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. Illinois Republican Party Chair Pat Brady resigned this
week. He told the Associated Press he decided to step down because of
his wifes continued battle with cancer and his desire to spend more time
with her and their children. Brady said social conservatives within the party
pressured him to step down after he publicly backed same-sex marriage
earlier this year.
Members of the Illinois Republican State Central Committee had been
scheduled to discuss Bradys termination in March, but they abruptly
cancelled the meeting at the last minute because they reportedly did not
have enough votes to oust him.
Pat Brady supported all Illinois families with his endorsement of the freedom
to marry, Equality Illinois CEO Bernard Cherkasov said. Now we honor his
decision to resign to focus on his family, and we wish them all the best.
Harvey Milk airport terminal proposed
SAN FRANCISCO Bay Area Reporter on Tuesday reported city ofcials
are considering a proposal to rename a terminal at San Francisco International
Airport after the late gay rights activist Harvey Milk.
City Supervisor David Campos in January proposed that ofcials rename
the entire airport as Harvey Milk San Francisco International Airport. The
newspaper reported LGBT San Franciscans and others were divided on the
plan, while Mayor Ed Lee also publicly questioned it.
The Bay Area Reporter said Campos and Lee agreed to allow a committee
to determine which terminal should be named in honor of Milk as part of a
compromise proposal.
Everyone does agree we need to honor Harvey Milk, Campos told the
newspaper. It is an important legacy there that should be recognized.
Kluwe cut by Minnesota Vikings
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. The Minnesota Vikings on Monday ofcially cut
punter Chris Kluwe from their roster.
Kluwe, who played for the team since 2005, publicly backed same-sex marriage
last fall. Minnesota Public Radio on Tuesday reported Kluwe said he was unsure
whether his advocacy played a role in the Vikings decision to release him.
The team stressed his performance and salary and not his marriage
activism were contributing factors.
Ricky Martin writes to lawmakers
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Ricky Martin has urged Puerto Rican lawmakers
to support measures that would extend adoption and other legal protections
to the islands LGBT residents.
The same rights for all Puerto Rican citizens, this is what we are asking for,
the newspaper el Nuevo Da on Tuesday reported he wrote in a letter to Gov.
Alejandro Garca Padilla and members of the Puerto Rico Senate and House
of Representatives. We hope to achieve this goal for a country of justice and
peace that we want.

Some say announcement
helped lead to success
at the ballot

Amid cheers over recent marriage
equality victories in Rhode Island and
Delaware, supporters of same-sex
marriage are marking the one-year
anniversary of President Obama coming
out for marriage equality, calling it
a milestone that helped lead to the
successes of the past year.
It was a year ago on May 9, 2012 that
Obama declared in an interview with
ABC News Robin Roberts that he had
grown to support same-sex marriage.
At a certain point, Ive just concluded
that, for me personally, it is important for
me to go ahead and afrm that I think
same-sex couples should be able to get
married, Obama said.
The decision, Obama said, came as
the result of speaking with gay members
of the armed forces during the debate
on Dont Ask, Dont Tell and realizing
they should have equal access to the
institution of marriage.
But the president was careful to limit
the scope of his support. Obama said he
was hesitant to make an announcement
in favor of marriage equality because he
didnt want to nationalize the issue and
maintained that he believes the marriage
issue remains one best left to the states.
And the announcement wasnt
spontaneous. The president endorsed
same-sex marriage after saying for 19
months he was in a state of evolution on
the issue.
Obama nally made the announcement
just three days after Vice President Joseph
Biden said on NBCs Meet the Press
that hes absolutely comfortable with
married same-sex couples having the
same exact rights as others.
Obamas endorsement of marriage
equality was seen as a watershed
moment because no sitting U.S.
president had ever come out for
marriage equality and supporters
of marriage hoped his words would
inuence others to join the president in
completing their evolution on the issue.
Arguably, that happened. In the days
after the announcement, a Washington
Post-ABC News poll found that a
majority of black Americans, 59 percent,
had also come to support same-sex
marriage up 18 points since the
presidents announcement.
Dan Pinello, whos gay and a political
scientist at the City University of
New York, identied this growth in
support of marriage equality among
black Americans as one of the most
immediate consequences of Obamas
endorsement of marriage equality.
Polling data show a statistically
signicant increase in support for same-
sex marriage among black respondents
for the periods immediately before and
after Obamas announcement, Pinello
said. In turn, this increased support
probably was crucial in a state with a
large African-American-voter contingent
like Maryland, which narrowly approved
of gay nuptials last November.
The growth in support isnt limited
to black Americans. Another widely
noticed poll in March from Washington
Post-ABC News found that 58 percent
of the American public had come to
support same-sex marriage.
And in the wake of the presidents
announcement, substantive changes
were seen in favor of marriage
equality throughout the country. For
the rst time ever, the Democratic
Party platform in 2012 endorsed
marriage equality. In another rst,
voters legalized same-sex marriage
in Maine, Maryland and Washington
State at the ballot in November, while
voters in Minnesota rejected a state
constitutional amendment banning
same-sex marriage. In the past week,
Rhode Island and Delaware became the
latest to join other states in legalizing
marriage equality.
Moreover, a bevy of U.S. senators have
followed in his tracks by coming out
for same-sex marriage. The ones who
have come out since the beginning of
this year include Sens. Claire McCaskill
(D-Mo,), Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Kay
Hagan (D-N.C.) as well as Republicans
Rob Portman (Ohio) and Mark Kirk
(Ill.). Now all but three members of
the Democratic caucus Sens. Joe
Manchin (D-W.Va.), Mary Landrieu (D-
La.) and Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) back
marriage equality.
Pinello said Obama articulating his
views a year ago in favor of marriage
helped set the tone for the Democratic
Party that has enabled other lawmakers
to come out for same-sex marriage.
The president set a standard for the
Democratic Party, encouraging its other
ofceholders to emulate his leadership
on the issue, Pinello said. For example,
I doubt that there would be nearly
unanimous support for marriage equality
among Democrats in the U.S. Senate
today without Obamas action a year ago.
On Wednesday, White House Press
Secretary Jay Carney reected on the
presidents current views on marriage
equality when asked by Sirius XM
Radios Jared Rizzi if Obama still thinks
that state-by-state is the best way
to address the issue in the wake of
Delaware becoming the 11th state with
same-sex marriage on the books.
There has been enormous progress
made, Carney said. I think that
the facts, as you just recited them,
demonstrate the progress made. The
presidents views are known. Hes
expressed them. Our views on issues
like DOMA and Prop 8 have been
expressed in legal lings, so Ill point
you to those. For him, its a fundamental
issue of equal rights, and thats why
he has taken the position that he has
taken. But for our legal approach to
these issues, I would refer you to the
Department of Justice.
But Obama hit another milestone six
months later on Election Day by winning
re-election to the White House despite
predictions that coming out for marriage
equality would jeopardize his re-election
prospects. Although he didnt win as he
did in 2008 North Carolina, a state with a
signicant evangelical population, Obama
walloped Mitt Romney in the electoral
college by taking 332 votes in the Electoral
College compared to Romneys 206.
Fred Sainz, vice president of
communications for the Human Rights
Campaign, said Obamas victory after
coming out for marriage equality
is having a major impact as LGBT
advocates push more states to legalize
same-sex marriage.
The president proved that elected
ofcials at the highest of levels
could be for marriage, campaign on
it and be reelected, in fact, based on
their support, Sainz said. Without
that shining example, we may not have
the number of senators we do today or
have been able to recruit the legislators
we need to support marriage in Rhode
Island and Delaware and soon in
Minnesota and Illinois.
Obamas support for marriage
equality hasnt been limited to his words
in that May interview. Days before the
election, newspapers in Maryland,
Maine and Washington State published
statements from his campaign urging
voters in those states to legalize
marriage equality at the ballot. After
Obama endorsed legislation in favor of
marriage equality in Illinois, Organizing
for Action, the successor organization to
the Obama campaign, sent out action
alerts to its members in the state calling
on them to help pass the marriage
equality legislation.
Most notably, Obama raised the
bar on his position in favor of same-
sex marriage by having his Justice
Department le a friend-of-the-court
brief in the pending lawsuit before
the Supreme Court challenging
Californias Proposition 8. Even before
Obama endorsed marriage equality,
his administration had already stopped
defending the Defense of Marriage Act
in court and aided litigation by ling
briefs and arguing against the law in
oral arguments.
John Aravosis, whos gay and editor of
AMERICAblog, said Obama has done
a pretty good job in acting on his
position in favor of marriage equality, but
added he could do more particularly
in advocating for immigration reform
that would enable gay Americans to
sponsor foreign spouses for residency.
If we sort of think through the things
that we wanted him to do in the last year
on marriage, hes done a lot of them,
Aravosis said. The only one I can think of
is putting his foot down on immigration
reform and saying, This shall not pass
if you discriminate against gays. Its the
only one I can think of off the top of my
head where he needs to do a better job
in terms of putting his foot down.
Aravosis added to some degree
the onus is on the LGBT community in
terms of coming up with the list of pro-
marriage needs to do because rabble-
rousing on the legal briefs in the Prop 8
case eventually led the administration to
make the decision to le them.
It remains to be seen what impact
the presidents words will have in future
battles over marriage equality. Will
lawmakers in Minnesota and Illinois
heed Obamas words as they consider
whether to become the 12th and 13th
states to legalize same-sex marriage?

against the Defense of Marriage Act
and Proposition 8?

GOP lawmaker criticizes
Equality Forum over honor
PHILADELPHIA An advocacy group
last week honored Cuban President
Ral Castros daughter for her efforts in
support of LGBT rights in Cuba.
Im very honored that this
organization, Equality Forum, invited
me to participate in this event this year,
Mariela Castro said during a press
conference with the groups executive
director, Malcolm Lazin, at the National
Museum of American Jewish History
before she accepted her award.
She is truly an international hero for
LGBT equality, Lazin added, noting
there have been what he described as
remarkable changes for LGBT Cubans
because of Mariela Castros work as
executive director of Cubas National
Center for Sex Education (CENESEX.) We
are really very honored to have her here in
the United States in an open forum.
Mariela Castro has spearheaded a
number of campaigns over the last
decade to promote acceptance of
LGBT Cubans and to curb the spread of
HIV/AIDS on the island.
She successfully lobbied the Cuban
government to begin offering free sex-
reassignment surgery under the countrys
national health care system in 2010.
Observers have credited Cubas
condom distribution campaign and
sexual education curriculum with
producing one of the worlds lowest HIV
infection rates. Cubans with the virus also
have access to free anti-retroviral drugs
through the countrys health care system.
Mariela Castro, whose uncle is former
Cuban President Fidel Castro, in May
2012 appeared on a panel with Rea
Carey, executive director of the National
Gay and Lesbian Task Force, in New
York while she and other Cuban scholars
visited the United States. She also met
with LGBT advocates in San Francisco
during the trip.
CENESEX has also scheduled a series
of events across the country between
May 7-18 to commemorate the annual
International Day Against Homophobia.
I am very proud of how we have
advanced [LGBT rights in Cuba,] she
said during a panel at the University
of the Arts earlier on Saturday that
former GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios
moderated. We want everybody to
have the same rights, she said. I think
that same-sex couples should have the
same rights.
The State Department initially denied
Mariela Castros request to travel to
Philadelphia, but Lazin on April 29
announced she had received the visa
that allowed her to attend the event.
Mariela Castro is the standard bearer
for the oppressive Cuban dictatorship
that has been wantonly violating
peoples human rights for over 50 years,
Cuban-born Florida Congresswoman
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said in a statement.
To allow her to come to the U.S. yet
again so she can proliferate the Castro
propaganda machine is appalling.
Herb Sosa, a rst-generation Cuban
American who is president of the Miami-
based Unity Coalition, an LGBT advocacy
group, also blasted Equality Forums
decision to honor Mariela Castro.
To reward any element of the
decades-old dictatorship, especially
for positive efforts on human rights
is a sad joke, he told the Washington
Blade. The daughter and niece of
the Castro dictators have blood on
their hands. Her marches and public
spectacles are nothing more than photo
ops for a willing and enabling media
that does not seem to want to ask too
many questions.

to Uganda prepare to mark
day against bias
LGBT rights advocates in more
than 100 countries around the world
will commemorate the International
Day Against Homophobia on May 17
with a series of marches, workshops,
performances and other events.
Identoba, an LGBT advocacy group
in Georgia, is planning a ash mob in
front of the countrys old Parliament
building in the countrys capital, Tbilisi,
on May 17 during which participants
will make a rainbow ag with their
T-shirts. Botswanan playwright and
activist Kalvin K. Kol-Kes is staging his
play BUTCHered inspired by Mart
Crowleys Boys in the Band that
focuses on a group of friends who are
predominantly lesbian.
Cubas National Center for Sexual
Education (CENESEX) has scheduled
a series of events across Cuba to
commemorate IDAHO. Nicaraguan
advocacy groups will march through
the streets of Managua, the countrys
capital, on May 17 to demand respect
and what organizers describe as
dignied treatment for LGBT people.
Washington National Cathedral in
D.C. on May 17 will host a screening
of the lm God Loves Uganda and
a panel discussion on the state of
LGBT rights in the East African country.
Thousands of people are expected to
take part in a march for LGBT rights in
San Juan, Puerto Rico, on the same day.
Zaque, an LGBT youth group in the
Australian city of Ballarat in the countrys
Victoria state will hold a number of
events to commemorate IDAHO. These
include the launch of a new iPhone app.
For the young people of Zaque,
IDAHO is important because it is a day
for them to stand up and be proud
and say that homophobia is not OK,
Ballarat City Councilor Belinda Coates
told the Washington Blade. Its a
celebration of who they are and allows
them to be leaders and educators within
the community.
The Albanian LGBT advocacy group
PINK Embassy will hold its second annual
diversity festival in Tirana, the countrys
capital that will feature exhibits with
messages and posters the groups general
manager, Amarildo Fecanji, described to
the Blade as a short resume of what has
been achieved so far.
Fecanjis group will also host panels
that will examine media coverage of
LGBT-specic issues and how they
factor into Albanian politics and gay
youth. Pink Embassy and other human
rights organizations will also stage a
diversity fair in the center of Tirana.
Slowly but steadily May 17 is coming
to be recognized as the gay day,
Fecanji told the Blade when asked how
he feels IDAHO bolsters his groups
advocacy efforts in the southeastern
European country. That for people
is an opportunity for society to sort of
come together.
IDAHO rst took place on May 17,
2005, to commemorate the World
Health Organizations decision to
declassify homosexuality as a mental
disorder. Organizers have subsequently
added transphobia and biphobia to
their mission.
This years IDAHO takes place against
the backdrop of the recent extension
of marriage rights to same-sex couples
in France, New Zealand, Uruguay and
several Brazilian states that include Rio
de Janeiro. Gays and lesbians can also
now legally tie the knot in nine U.S.
states and D.C. and will soon be able to
do so in Delaware and Rhode Island.
Canadian and Dutch lawmakers earlier
this year approved a transgender rights
bills, but anti-LGBT discrimination and
violence remain pervasive throughout
the world.
Honduran advocate Jos Pepe
Palacios told the Blade in February
while he was in the United States that
at least 89 LGBT people in the Central
American country have been murdered
since the 2009 coup that ousted Jos
Manuel Zelaya.
Identoba founder Irakli Vacharadze
told the Blade violence against LGBT
Georgians remains a serious concern.

Proposes 2 measures to
protect bi-national families

The lead sponsor of the Uniting American
Families Act in the Senate has announced
that hell introduce the legislation as
one of two committee amendments for
gay couples as part of comprehensive
immigration reform legislation.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chair
Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said in a statement
on Tuesday that he led the measure
which would enable gay Americans
to sponsor their foreign partners for
residency in the United States along
with several other amendments before
the committee for the immigration bill.
For immigration reform to be
truly comprehensive, it must include
protections for all families, Leahy said.
We must end the discrimination that
gay and lesbian families face in our
immigration law.
According to the statement, Leahy
also led a separate amendment that
would provide equal protection to
lawfully married bi-national same sex
couples that other spouses receive
under existing immigration law.
Jessica Brady, a committee
spokesperson, said the UAFA-like
amendment covers permanent partners,
but the other measure is for bi-national
same-sex couples that are married.
LGBT advocates have said they
previously received assurances
that Leahy would offer UAFA as an
amendment when the committee marks
up the bill, but Leahys announcement
is the rst time that hes publicly
committed to offering the amendment.
Steve Ralls, spokesperson for the
LGBT group Immigration Equality, said
his organization fully supports both
amendments and is optimistic they will
nd majority support in committee.
We expect in the coming days that the
chairman will, as he has so far, work to get
the votes for a successful amendment in
committee, Ralls said. We have every
faith that were going to win.
All committee amendments to
comprehensive immigration reform
were due Tuesday. The committee is
scheduled to vote Friday on the rst
round of amendments. Subsequent
votes are slated for May 14, May 16,
May 20 and every day that follows until
theres a nal vote on the bill. Chances
are the amendments for gay inclusion
will come up on one of these later days.
Leahy les this second amendment
that would only apply to married same-
sex couples after Sen. Dianne Feinstein
(D-Calif.), who had previously withheld
support for UAFA, was quoted in Politico
as saying she he had concerns about
the legislation as currently written, but
would accept it with certain changes.
The California Democrat reportedly
said shed vote for the amendment if
it required gay couples to marry in the
United States within 90 days in a state
that allows same-sex unions.
But Im not for just accepting
afdavits, she reportedly added.
Plans for a vote on the amendment
come as Republican senators among the
Gang of Eight who produced the base
immigration bill have spoken out against
its inclusion in reform. A piece last week
from Politico quoted Sen. Marco Rubio
(R-Fla.) as saying it would virtually
guarantee the legislation wont pass.
This issue is a difcult enough issue
as it is, Rubio was quoted as saying.
I respect everyones views on it. But
ultimately, if that issue is injected into this
bill, the bill will fail and the coalition that
helped put it together will fall apart.

Lopez, whose district includes
Rehoboth Beach, said on the Senate oor
he and his family experienced hate
during the nal weeks of his campaign
against gay Realtor Andy Staton last
fall because of the iers the Delaware
Liberty Fund, an independent LGBT PAC,
distributed. He said they came from and
were paid for from individuals who now
support marriage equality.
The Victory Fund, which endorsed Staton,
declined to comment on Lopezs claims.
Staton described the iers to the
Washington Blade on Wednesday as
unfortunate.
Lopez did not immediately return
the Blades request for comment, but
Staton criticized his former opponent
for voting against HB 75.
He misrepresented his district,
Staton said. This is a district that
strongly favored marriage equality and
it was unfortunate that he could not side
with those people that were in favor of
equality for all of us here in Delaware.
Neighboring Maryland is among the
nine states and D.C. in which same-sex
couples can currently marry.
Gays and lesbians can legally tie the knot
in Rhode Island on Aug. 1 after the states
same-sex marriage law that Gov. Lincoln
Chafee signed last week takes effect.
Gov. Jack Markell signed HB 75 into
law shortly after the Senate approved it.
Today, we wrote a new chapter in our
history and proved, once again, justice
and equality continue to move forward
in Delaware, he said. By signing
House Bill 75 into law, we are another
step closer toward achieving that goal.
Delaware Sen. Chris Coons is among
those who also applauded HB 75s passage.

state, he said. The passage of HB 75
ushers in a new era of equality in our
state and marks an important moment in
our states history. I am incredibly proud.

our citizens, state Rep. Melanie George

equality and treating all couples in a
loving, committed relationship with

said he and his ofce worked with Coplin
in the spring and early summer of 2012
to resolve an issue that could have led
to his eviction.
We thought the matter had been
resolved, Graham told the Blade.
Budd and Collins, who were friends of
Coplins, said in an email exchange after
learning of Coplins death that they tried
their best to help him. But they said
Coplin didnt reach out to them until
after his March 28 eviction landed him
and his belongings on the street outside
the Columbia Uptown Apartments at
1375 Fairmont St., N.W.
I have tried to search my heart
and soul in trying to gure out is there
anything else that could have been
done to prevent this tragedy, Budd, an
ofcial with the local group Transgender
Health Empowerment, said in an email.
Collins stated in an email to Budd and
other activists on April 9 that she took
Coplin into her home after he called
her and asked her to pick him up on the
street following the eviction. She said
he stayed with her until April 2, when
he told her he was going to the citys
housing department to seek help in
obtaining temporary housing.
I lost contact with him after that until
the call from the detective last night
informing me of his suicide, Collins
wrote.
She was referring to a call from a
Montgomery County police detective
who informed her that Coplins body
was found in a hotel room in Rockville
and that the death was believed to be
a suicide.
A spokesperson for the Maryland
State Medical Examiner said the cause
of death was determined to be an
alcohol and drug overdose and the
manner of death was ruled a suicide.
The drug was identied as oxycodone,
the spokesperson said.
We need to do something about
how seniors are treated in the eviction
process and resources made available
at the time of eviction so that they have
a place to stay and also encompass any
medical or mental health issues they
may have, Collins wrote.
In a series of interviews in the weeks
following Coplins death, people who
knew him and those who took steps to
help him including Graham told the
Blade that numerous programs at D.C.
government agencies and from private
community organizations existed that
could have provided all of the help
Coplin needed.
The fact that he didnt call on people
he knew to set in motion the help and
resources he needed until after the
eviction raises questions about his
emotional state, friends said. They
also have asked how friends and family
members might recognize signs of
distress, even if a loved one doesnt
choose to talk about it.
We have all these questions
lingering, said Jackie Reyes, a
constituent services staffer in Grahams
D.C. Council ofce who worked with
Graham on Coplins case. Something
happened that he didnt want to talk
about this, Reyes said.
Mims said he has known Coplin since
the two went to high school in D.C. Both
became involved in D.C.s gay social
circles in the late 1960s, when there were
few bars and gay life centered on social
groups, especially in the citys black gay
community.
Mims said he only learned recently
that Coplin served in the U.S. Navy
before beginning a career as a hairstylist.
According to Mims, Coplins career was
cut short after he was diagnosed with
AIDS in the 1980s and illness prevented
him from working and resulted in his
going on disability.
Coplin continued to become involved
in gay community activities over the
years, Mims said, including participating
in LGBT Pride-related events.
For at least the past 10 years, Mims
said, Coplin received nancial assistance
for his rent through a federally funded
program that provides rent subsidies
through vouchers issued by the city.
Friends and others who knew him said
problems with his apartment appear to
have surfaced shortly after owners of the
high-rise apartment building completed
an extensive renovation project that
some viewed as a gentrication effort
to attract new tenants that could afford
far higher rents.
In early 2012 Coplin fell behind in his
rent and records from the D.C. Superior
Courts Landlord-Tenant Branch show
that eviction proceedings were led
against Coplin. Thats when Grahams
ofce stepped in and helped Coplin
navigate through the problem and catch
up on his rent through city programs
available to him, Graham said.
But just a few months later, according
to court records, the landlord led a
new eviction proceeding against him
that was unrelated to his rent payments.
Instead, the eviction ling accused
him of violating his lease by allegedly
assaulting a woman on the premises
who worked as a childcare provider for
another tenant.
Court records show that the case
went to trial in January of this year and a
judge ruled in favor of the eviction after
Coplin and witnesses for the landlord
testied under oath. The records show
that Coplin did not have a lawyer and
represented himself.
Some who knew Coplin say they are
suspicious of the motives of the landlord
since the eviction proceedings took
place at a time when Coplin was among
the few if not the only longtime tenant
remaining in the building from the days
before the renovation project.
John Raftery, one of several attorneys
representing Van Metre Columbia
Uptown Apartments, LLC, the landlord,
said Coplin admitted in court in his
testimony that he committed the assault.
Raftery told the Blade the building had
no choice but to take steps to evict a
tenant who commits an act of violence
in the building.
I think the issue in that particular
building was several people had
vouchers, said Mims. And they sort of
moved them out of the building. I dont
know if gentrication was part of it or not.
Regardless of the actual cause of the
eviction, Mims and others who knew
Coplin said the state of Coplins mental
health appeared to play a role in some of
Coplins actions near the end of his life.
My concern was that we didnt learn
about everything until later, Mims said.
Had he told us I would never have let
him sit on the streetThe thing that
bothers me is I think he felt so hopeless.
Courtney Williams, a gay ofcial with
the D.C. Ofce of Aging, said he didnt
know Coplin personally but learned
about his case from activists. He said
his ofce specializes in coordinating
services for seniors facing problems
similar to Coplin.
All people need to do is call us, he
said.
We heard nothing about it until
it actually happened, Graham said
in commenting on Coplins March 28
eviction. Thats when he contacted me.
And once an eviction happens its very
hard to respond. But we did respond,
Graham said.
Graham said his ofce arranged for
the building to put most if not all of
Coplins possessions in storage.
And then he vanished, said Graham.
We couldnt reach him anymore. And I
contacted MPD and asked them if there
had been a missing persons report.
Days later Graham learned of Coplins
suicide from Collins.

Md. to end DP benets for couples
Now that same-sex marriage is legal in Maryland, the state will no
longer offer domestic partner benets for its employees. According to the
Baltimore Sun, the OMalley administration notied employees in same-sex
relationships that they would have to get married to receive health coverage.
Fewer than 300 employees, including retirees, would be affected.
The state granted domestic partner benets in 2009 because same-sex
couples could not get married then. Same-sex marriage became legal on Jan. 1.
The news was met with some objection. Its really not the most equitable
thing to be doing right now, Carrie Evans, executive director of Equality
Maryland told the Sun.
But OMalley spokesperson Raquel Guillory noted that if two paths to
benets are offered to same-sex couples but only one to opposite-sex
couples, the state could face lawsuits. The changes would go into effect next
Jan. 1, but that is subject to change.

Scientists hopeful about new HIV treatment
LONDON A new approach to HIV treatment being researched by Danish scientists
has been successful in in vitro studies, which led to a large grant and additional studies
with humans, the Daily Telegraph, a British paper, reported last week along with other
news outlets.
The approach, which researchers said theyre almost certain will be successful,
involves reactivating the HIV virus from its hiding place within human DNA and bringing
it to the surface from where it rests in immune cells, the article said. Once it comes to the
surface, the bodys natural immune system may be able to kill it, researchers told the
Telegraph.
The challenge will be getting the patients immune system to recognize the virus
and destroy it, Dr. Ole Sogaard, a senior researcher at the Aarhus University Hospital
in Denmark, was quoted as saying. This depends on the strength and sensitivity
of individual immune systems as well as how large a proportion of the hidden HIV is
unmasked.
Fifteen patients are taking part in the trials, the Telegraph reported. The rst results
from the trial are expected later this year.
Insurance policy helps gay Mich. residents
FERNDALE, Mich. Afrmations, an LGBT community center in the Detroit metro
area, will now accept clients with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan health insurance for
counseling and mental health services, Between the Lines, a gay news outlet, reported
last week.
The change will help the center with its long-term nancial sustainability, the article
said. Afrmations provides counseling regardless of patients health care coverage or
ability to pay, the article said.
Stop-and-frisk policy sparks controversy
NEW YORK LGBT residents in the Big Apple are saying the New York Police
Departments stop-and-frisk program is unfairly targeting them, NY1, a regional news
agency, reported last week.
One trans woman, Johanna Valesquez, told NY1s Dean Meminger she was arrested
after being frisked simply for having condoms in her purse.
Several groups rallied at City Hall on May 3 and said theyre outraged especially
when the New York City Health Department gives out free condoms and clean syringes.
They say police are arresting people for prostitution or drugs simply because they have
condoms or needles in their possession, the article said.
Arrests for prostitution or promoting prostitution are based on probable cause, and
never solely on the presence of condoms, but the presence of condoms can be a relevant
piece of evidence that prosecutors use to prove the case, Deputy Police Commissioner
Paul Browne was quoted as saying by NY1.
Healthy penis campaign re-emerges
SAN FRANCISCO The San Francisco Department of Health is continuing
with a graphic-but-effective public health campaign its used in recent years
involving a giant cartoon penis character that hands out discounts to those who
undergo HIV tests, the Hufngton Post reported this week.
The Departments Healthy Penis campaign involves a trio of cartoon penises
and their enemy Phil the Syphilis Sore. The characters work with local merchants
in the citys heavily gay Castro District to offer discounts at Starbucks, Sunglass
Hut and more, to anyone willing to take an HIV test. Coupons look like dollar bills
with Byron H. Penis in the place of Washington on the note. A healthy penis
squeeze toy reminds residents to get tested every six months.
When people know their status, theyre a lot less likely to spread their infection
around, said Thomas Knoble in the Hufngton Post article. Hes one of the
efforts organizers and says it was initially created about a decade ago and seen
as a major factor in a marked decrease in syphilis cases.
He told the Post theres been surprisingly little backlash against the campaign,
even among those organizers thought might object. The campaign is not LGBT-
specic but targets the citys gay community the article said. It runs through October.

The momentum is decidedly on our side.
A gay male professional athlete has come
out. America is overwhelmingly in support
of same-sex marriage, and the march for
legislative approval of our relationships
is well underway. And yet, progress is
still lagging behind in one of the most
important areas of our lives: LGBT health.
But the tide has certainly turned, as
some notable advances have recently
been made to curb the many health
disparities our community faces,
including disproportionate rates of
certain cancers, smoking, substance
abuse, HIV/AIDS, mental health
problems and barriers to accessing care.
Marking a critical rst step in
addressing these shortfalls has been the
collection of LGBT health data, which
began in earnest on Jan. 1 through the
National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)
viewed as the principle source of
information on the health of Americans
for more than 50 years.
With the inclusion of sexual identity
questions in the NHIS, Health and Human
Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius
has nally made good on her promise
to collect data on the health of LGBT
Americans, which will continue through
Dec. 31 as part of a supplemental section,
the Adult Sexual Identity Questionnaire.
Although inclusion of sexual identity
questions in future versions of the NHIS
is still not guaranteed, the ripple effect
of this initial supplement is expected
to drive other federal agencies, state
departments of health and researchers,
all of which look to the NHIS for
guidance on structuring their public
health surveys, to follow suit.
In summer 2011, while heads of many
LGBT organizations were content that
future data collection was a done deal,
other advocates remained skeptical
when Sebelius spoke of rst needing to
market-test sexual identity questions
prior to their inclusion in the survey. Many
felt this delay was unnecessary, since
sufcient studies had already determined
appropriate ways to collect such
information. As such, they questioned
whether the marginal gain in data
accuracy from further question renement
would offset the loss of another two years
without data on LGBT peoples lives.
On Oct. 24, 1997, then-HHS Secretary,
Donna Shalala, faced an analogous
situation, when she mandated the
inclusion of information on race and
ethnicity in all HHS-sponsored data
collections systems. Within a week
the HHS-wide policy went into effect,
covering all federal public health
surveys, sans the unnecessary eld-
testing now required for sexual identity
questions. Sebelius could and some
argue should have done the same;
but other forces were at play this time.
In particular, due to concern over the
sensitive nature of the sexual identity
questions potentially causing reporting
bias when collected, many worried that
prohibitively expensive requirements,
such as the use of audio computer assisted
self-interviewing technology to administer
such questions, would ultimately prevent
their inclusion in the NHIS. Fortunately,
the market-testing phase proved
such requirements unnecessary; but this
study could have easily gone the other
way. Instead a decision was made to
use ashcards to administer the sexual
identity questions in lieu of interviewers
asking respondents directly.
The main question, posed to
respondents at least 18 years old, has
two versions depending on whether the
individual identies as male or female.

Those answering Something else
or Refused, are prompted by further
clarifying questions. In its current form,
only by answering Something else is
a question about gender identity even
offered. Unfortunately, this structure
confusingly entwines sexual orientation
and gender, two distinct dimensions of
human identity.
The data will be rst available to the
public through a quarterly release of the
raw data in September 2013, covering
January through March 2013. The
complete 2013 dataset will be released
in late June 2014. For those interested,
the survey questions and future data
can be accessed through the website:

Asking these simple sexual identity
questions signies a monumental
step forward for the health of LGBT
Americans that should be celebrated.
However, our work is not done. We
must continue to push for rened data
collection in future iterations of the
NHIS and other surveys as part of their
core datasets.

D.C. may be breast cancer
capital of the world
Washington, D.C., has the highest
rate of breast cancer deaths in the
entire United States, followed by New
Jersey and Louisiana, then Virginia and
Maryland. Between 2001 and 2005, D.C.
ranked sixth in the nation. So if you look
at the entire Washington metropolitan
area, we might be considered the breast
cancer capital of the world.
Now add the fact that, of all ethnic
groups, black women have the highest
breast cancer death rates. Theyre
almost twice as likely as white women to
die of breast cancer.
Hey, lets go even deeper. It is now
widely recognized lesbians are at
higher risk of breast cancer. Why?
Well, there are several reasons. First, it
has been shown that lesbians are less
likely to have health insurance, unless
they are married to straight men who
have employee-provided coverage.
Even if theyre out and in committed
same-sex relationships, theyre usually
excluded from coverage available to
opposite-sex couples. Its called health
discrimination. I have a more accurate
name for it: Health Hate Crime. And
it can kill, too.
Chances are if you are living in rural
Louisiana, you wont reveal to your
doctor youre a lesbian. Thus, he or
she wont be aware of your higher risk
of breast cancer. You also will not nd
support groups for lesbian breast
cancer survivors. You can count on that.
If you live in New York City? Probably.
Of course, some researches pooh-
pooh this idea, and say few lesbian
breast cancer studies have been
conducted and those that have used
small sample sizes. So, why not do more
research? It only seems logical lesbians
face a higher risk of breast cancer. Still,
additional studies need to be carried
out. Sadly, all it will take to scuttle that
suggestion are a few conservative
lawmakers raising a stink, as they did
regarding the lesbian obesity studies.
However, theres some good news.
Department of Health and Human
Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius
announced this year HHS will begin
collecting health-related data on
members of the LGBTQ community.
Health disparities have persistent and
costly effects for minority communities,
and the whole country, Sebelius
pointed out. No kidding.
One lesbian activist whod had enough
of discrimination against lesbians was
Mary-Helen Mautner. In 1989, only
weeks away from succumbing to breast
cancer herself, Mautner took the rst
step to placing lesbians front and center
in the breast cancer and LGBTQ health
arena. Her life partner Susan Hester,
joined by dedicated friends, created
the Mary-Helen Mautner Project for
Lesbians with Cancer, now known as the
Mautner Project.
Other lesbians have since stepped
forward and outed themselves as breast
cancer survivors. In 2004, lesbian music
icon Melissa Etheridge was diagnosed
with breast cancer, followed by lesbian
tennis great Martina Navratilova.
(Navratilova gave her diagnosis the
name, my own personal 9/11.)
Have you noticed all these women are
white?
Then in 2011 came shocking news from
comedienne Wanda Sikes when she
revealed publicly she had undergone
an aggressive double mastectomy in
hopes of avoiding the breast cancer that
ran in her family. Overnight, Sikes the
rst celebrity, black lesbian to announce
she had breast cancer became a
vocal advocate for lesbian breast cancer
survivors. All it takes is a brave black
woman to tell the world shes a breast
cancer survivor. M ore will follow.
A late diagnosis can lead to early
death and early diagnoses can mean
survival. Prevention is the key. But
women who go to gynecologists usually
do so to obtain birth control. Lesbians,
not concerned about birth control, are
thus less likely to be checked for breast
(and cervical and ovarian) cancer.
Dr. Susan Love, the world-renowned
lesbian surgeon and bestselling author
of Dr. Susan Loves Breast Book,
shocked the breast cancer community
when she revealed in a New York
Times article she had leukemia. The
65-year-old lesbian breast cancer
activist told the Times she would have
been less shocked if it were breast
cancer because its so common.
With leukemia, she said, she entered
a world she didnt know. Even when
youre a physician, she said, when
you get shocking news like this you sort
of forget everything you know and are
scared the same as everybody else.

wins national award for
area revitalization
A bevy of city economic develop-
ment, planning and D.C. Department
of Small and Local Business Develop-
ment (DSLBD) ofcials gathered with
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray on Monday
evening last week at the landmark At-
las Performing Arts Center on H Street,
N.E., to celebrate a special recognition
with community leaders and residents.
Earlier in April, the National Trust for
Historic Preservation had bestowed a
2013 Great American Main Street Award
to the H Street Main Street organization
for its efforts during the past 10 years to
encourage and assist in the revitaliza-
tion of the once languishing area.
The planned end-of-year launch of
the Districts rst streetcar line along H
Street, from the backside of Union Sta-
tion headed eastward, will serve as a
symbol of the resurgent development
progressively taking root. It will also
mark a milestone in the long landscape
claw-back from the devastation of the
1968 riots following the assassination of
Martin Luther King, Jr.
As a transportation novelty, the
streetcar project has sparked interest in
the near Northeast neighborhood and
spurred commercial and private sector
development.
The H Street commercial district is
undergoing an accelerating transforma-
tion. Near-daily announcements herald
new hospitality and retail or service
businesses planned or opening, along
with residential and mixed-use devel-
opment updates on hundreds of new
construction housing units added or
anticipated. A Giant Food store opened
last weekend at street level beneath 215
new apartments at 3rd St. the areas
rst new full-scale grocery to open in
more than 40 years.
The H Street Main Street group and
tireless director Anwar Saleem, honored
at the event, have spent the past de-
cade encouraging preservation of exist-
ing thoroughfare buildings to protect
its small town scale and historic struc-
tures. The organization has also aided
legacy local small businesses with techni-
cal assistance bridging the gap to chang-
ing community demand, evolving retail
needs and modern marketing opportu-
nities. Partnering with DSLBD and other
city agencies, Saleem and his community
cohorts kept the vision of a renewed fu-
ture alive when progress was plodding.
Mayor Gray touted the renaissance
and resurrection of the H Street area,
recalling the African-American, Irish,
Russian, German and Jewish residents
and shopkeepers when growing up only
a few blocks away. Gray described the
community at the time as lively and
diverse. Todays growing population
of longtime and new residents, hipsters
and homeowners, young and old por-
tends a similar eclectic mix and vibrancy.
Harriet Tregoning, D.C. Ofce of
Planning director, described the pro-
cess as a balancing act necessary to
move to the future without forgetting
the past. She highlighted the incred-
ible growth in new restaurants and
entertainment venues as key to the
areas comeback.
One whirlwind force instrumental
in that hospitality rebirth and instru-
mental in reacquainting H Street to
past skeptics has been Joe Englert,
the prolic creator of quirky nightlife
establishments in Washington for the
past 25 years.
A veteran of downtown, Dupont
Circle and U Street, N.W., bars and res-
taurants with an edgy character and sig-
nature outlandish motifs, Englert shifted
his investment focus to the Northeast
strip in 2004. He opened eight watering
holes and food-serving nightspots in
quick succession. Englerts commitment
to what was then a forlorn 13 blocks
didnt go unnoticed.
Like the Main Street organization,
Englert became a driving force in the
neighborhood, encouraging business
interest in its renewed potential and
nurturing relationships with city politi-
cians and agency ofcials. He promoted
the moniker Atlas District and it stuck.
Due to the ongoing dedication of H
Street Main Street in partnership with
city ofcials, and the unique contribu-
tion of savvy and visionary entrepre-
neurs like Joe Englert, the areas best
days are to come again.

Contract with Hogan Lovells
must include input from
teachers, parents
Its fair to ask why Council member
David Catania hired Hogan Lovells to
handle research and development of
new education legislation and why if
this is so important its being paid for
with private donations rather than pub-
lic funds. Is there public oversight that
will be avoided by paying for it this way?
The Hogan Lovells Education Prac-
tice Group has some impressive individ-
uals, including Elizabeth Meers, practice
area leader. They have a wealth of back-
ground working with schools and high-
er education. But there is little in their
online biographies to engender con-
dence in their familiarity with teach-
ing or running K-12 schools. Only one
member of the practice group claims a
background as a principal and teacher
and that is in the Montgomery County
Schools. She also has a connection to
Teach for America, which sounds like a
warning bell to some.
None of this should stop them from
doing a good job in researching D.C.
education regulations and policies;
looking at other policies around the na-
tion; or helping to draft new legislation.
But it does make you wonder why there
arent D.C. education experts, adminis-
trators, teachers and parents as part of
an initial group doing this research and
discussing and debating the relevance
of the research found.
Catania should be applauded for tak-
ing the time to learn about education,
visiting schools and meeting with par-
ents, administrators and teachers. But
that begs the question of whether the
people at Hogan Lovells will be meeting
with them directly. Will the nal product
from Hogan Lovells be a surprise to ev-
eryone except Catania?
D.C. has recent experience with some-
one making decisions about our schools
and our children without really listening
to parents, administrators and teachers.
That happened during the tenure of Mi-
chelle Rhee. What began as an exciting
idea ended in defeat for both Mayor
Fenty and his chancellor with recrimina-
tions on all sides continuing. It will be a
shame if the $300,000 spent on the team
at Hogan Lovells ends up the same way
a good idea gone awry.
School reform means different things
to different constituencies. There have
been various reform efforts going back
to the 1960s; from Ocean Hill/Browns-
ville in New York to Rhee in D.C. with
educators moving to open classrooms
and ridding schools of ability grouping
and back again. Every 10 or so years we
give an old idea a new name and call it
reform. We went from saying you cant
educate children in classrooms with
more than 20 students to again saying
good teachers can teach larger classes.
We tried all kinds of reading programs
from Hooked on Phonics to Success
for All and still have huge achievement
gaps, students who cant read and low
high school graduation rates.
I taught grade school in Harlem,
served as executive director of the Na-
tional Association for Gifted Children
for 14 years and served on the educa-
tion transition teams of Adrian Fenty and
Vincent Gray. I both fought the teachers
union and was a member of the union
and can attest that education reform
is neither easy nor simple. I agree with
Sam Chaltain who wrote, Despite pub-
lic stereotypes of the profession, K-12
education is a complex web of cognitive,
social, emotional, language, ethical and
physical challenges and opportunities.
George H.W. Bushs much-touted
1989 education summit resulted in six
national education goals. We have nev-
er successfully attained the rst All chil-
dren in America will start school ready to
learn and in many ways that is the crux
of the problem. We know the rst ve
years of a childs life are crucial to brain
function and making synapse connec-
tions. If a child isnt challenged in those
ve years because of where or how they
grow up, they spend years trying to
catch up.
With this knowledge, many in the
community will be uncomfortable turn-
ing to a bunch of lawyers, no matter
how smart, to do the research and make
recommendations on how to improve
education without having direct and on-
going input from parents, teachers and
local education experts.
Another good education idea gone awry?

Progressive doesnt
mean young and white
The time has come to have a citywide
dialogue on race. In these so-called post
racial times, it is considered taboo to men-
tion race and anyone who does is blasted
with the invective that he or she is play-
ing the race card, a term that is offensive
because it insinuates that racial disparities
dont exist and are a game played by those
whose only intention is to race-bait. As
a result, race becomes the elephant in the
room that many know is relevant, but no
one dares speak about.
The special election for D.C. At-Large
Council member is the latest example of
this. A committed, progressive activist was
maligned for daring to respond to a ques-
tion about race without being politically cor-
rect enough to carefully parse her words to
not really address the question. This activist
was educated at the University of California
at Berkeley and has a history of being com-
mitted to progressive causes, such as civil
rights, gay rights, womens rights, workers
rights and poverty issues. This committed,
progressive activist has been a member of
the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, the
Districts largest LGBT political organization,
since 1978 only two years after its found-
ing and long before it was popular to be
supportive of LGBT rights.
If you heard such a background, most
peoples rst thought would probably be,
Sounds like your typical Berkeley liberal.
However, for some reason, the candidate
that ts this prole, Anita Bonds, was not
characterized this way. Rather, despite her
long history of being liberal or progres-
sive on the issues, not only was she not
given the progressive title, but she was
painted as being anti-progressive, despite
all evidence to the contrary.
Its hard to believe that the reason isnt
because of the package that this particular
progressive comes in. In this city, progres-
sive has become code for young and most-
ly white. While most so-called progressives
are open to the idea that someone like me,
a well-educated, 30-something, African-
American lesbian, could be progressive,
most residents did not even open their
minds to the possibility that Anita Bonds,
a heterosexual, college-educated, African-
American grandmother in her late 60s,
could be. To many, Anita Bonds attributes
represent conservative, middle-class, Afri-
can-American culture, which is assumed to
not t the progressive prole, so she was au-
tomatically labeled as non-progressive, with
no true attempt to determine if the label t.
During a candidate forum on the Kojo
Nnamdi Show, Bonds was posed a ques-
tion about whether race was a factor in the
campaign and she responded in a manner
that addressed the concerns of some resi-
dents who fear that their needs may not be
adequately addressed if they dont have
somewhat proportionate representation on
the Council. That doesnt mean that those
people, or Bonds when speaking of their
fears, feel that only African Americans can
represent African Americans.
That is why it was disheartening that
when Bonds honestly mentioned this con-
cern when responding to a question ad-
dressed to her, instead of trying to under-
stand the concern and getting at the root
cause of why some people in this city feel
marginalized, she was demonized and cast
as a bigot. This rhetoric is not only false, but
its extremely harmful to the city because we
cant move forward as a united city if we are
not willing to listen to others perspective.
Many African Americans felt that several
white candidates were also playing racial
politics by using terms like progressive
or reform that appeal to white voters and
expressing concern about splitting votes in
the western part of the city among the oth-
er progressive or reform candidates.
Thus, both white and African-American can-
didates realized the sad reality that most of
their votes would come from those of the
same background.
Bonds had strong multiracial support
from people who have worked with her in
the past and the same can be said for some
of the other candidates. I truly hope that
those who did not support Bonds use the
next 20 months to learn more about her,
and reach out to her ofce so she can un-
derstand their concerns and address their
needs. In the meantime, we should all com-
mit to creating a forum to openly discuss
racial divisions, instead of pretending they
dont exist. Its the only way for us to unite as
a city and move forward.

How did you meet? I met Chyna Pendarvis (RIP)
through a friend of mine, Don Pendarvis (RIP). I was
competing for the Miss Magic Pageant 1998, which I won
singing live Whitney Houston Your Love Is My Love. The
pageant is part of the Gay Softball league here in D.C.
called Chesapeake and Potomac Softball League (CAPS). I
painted myself for it and Don came over to help me and he
said, Girl you look a hot ghetto mess. So he calls Chyna
to come and do my makeup and clothes. I was always told
the rst drag queen that paints you and put you in drag is
your drag mother. She taught me the ropes on drag life and
the drama that comes with it.
What does she mean to you? She means the world to me.
Taught me so much on life in the gay community. How to get
booked for drag shows, how to host to get patrons excited
to see drag queens perform. She was a pageant girl, so she
guided me on how to compete as well. Chyna was a diva at
her craft, also had a loving family that supported the art form.

How did you meet? I met my drag mom at a nightclub
called The Edge that used to be located in Southeast
Washington near the Navy Yard Marine Base. Shi-Queeta-Lee
wasnt born yet (I dont believe), so the rst three years of our
interaction was with Jerry. Later I ran into her again and she
introduced me as her child, which I didnt dispute. It was then
that I began to carry the last name Lee. A few years later,
the birth of Shi-Queeta-Lee arrived in D.C. and started hosting
a drag show at the famous Bachelors Mill. I was infatuated
with drag performances for many years that I began to secretly
desire to hit the stage as a male entertainer one day and Shi-
Queeta-Lee was the rst to give me my start.
What does she mean to you? Shi-Queeta-Lee is and will
always be the catalyst of our family. She is also a well-known public
gure who has endured ridicule, harsh criticism, etc. within our
gay community for believing that the drag-gay/bi/transgender
community can reach higher ground if presented in a different
framework that connects all genders, all races. She embodies
diversities, complexity, independence, boldness, unconditional

Spend any real time in the gay world
and you know there are many who
take drag very seriously, from the
elaborate routines to the familial ties.
Since this weekend is Mothers Day,
we asked a few local performers
why drag families are important. It
didnt take long to realize its about
a lot more than borrowing lipstick or
getting input on a new gown.
It truly is family, says Muffy Blake-
Stephyns. Few people know me
quite as well as my drag family. We
complete each others sentences,
we know just what to say or do to
comfort one another. We have each
others back.
Were closer than your actual blood
relatives, says Alexandra B. Childs.
We sew, rhinestone, glue, paint,
staple, smile and lip sync our hearts
our lor one anorher. ur cra lamily
hangs out together in and out of the
drag scene. Drag events are like a
weekly family reunion for us with a lot
more hairspray and sequins involved
than most others.
Drag families are just an elaborate
support system, BaNaka says. A
sisterhood that is there for you when
you need it.

How long have you been out and
who was the hardest person to tell?
I have been out for 15 years and I
really did not have to tell anyone. I
was outed to my parents, my sisters
and to my job by my ex.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Matthew and Judy Shepard. The
amount of work that Judy Shepard
has put into the LGBT community on
behalf of her son Matthew is incredible.
Whats Washingtons best
nightspot, past or present?
I may be a little partial, but Town
Danceboutique for Bear Happy Hour
is the best D.C. nightspot.

Describe your dream wedding.
We will be having our dream wedding
this year. Charger and I met because
of National Police Week. I had set an
information table up for my LGBT Police
Week events during Bear Happy Hour.
That chance meeting led to an amazing
relationship. He proposed during Bear
Happy Hour by using a fantastic video
presentation and by having a dance
troupe perform a number to our song.
I knew at that point that our wedding
had to take place at Town, which has
been such a wonderful part of our
lives and it was only tting to have our
ceremony and reception there. We will
be converting Town into our dream
reception later this year.
What non-LGBT issue are
you most passionate about?
Animal rescue. Up until the last three
weeks, Charger and I had four rescue
dogs, three Great Danes and my retired
K-9 Shepherd. Unfortunately three
weeks ago we lost our oldest Great
Dane, Angel, and just yesterday we had
to make the horrible decision to put
my German Shepherd, Misty, to sleep
because of an issue with her heart.
What historical outcome
would you change?

Whats been the most
memorable pop culture
moment of your lifetime?
Probably no pop culture moment,
but I will never forget this past
election when the voters of Maryland
passed gay marriage and Obama was
reelected. One of the most emotional
moments of my life.
On what do you insist?
Equal respect for all of our LGBT
heroes who have lost their lives
protecting others around them. So
many times the families, (partners,
signicant others, etc) are left out of
all memorial services.

What was your last
Facebook post or Tweet?
My last Facebook post was actually
a picture of Misty, my Shepherd, and
it said, Heartbroken again we had
to say goodbye to our baby girl k9
Misty was my partner for several years
and one of the best drug dogs ever
I will never forget her.

If your life were a book,
what would the title be?
Dogs on a Sofa

If science discovered a way to
change sexual orientation,
what would you do?
Nothing at all.
What do you believe in
beyond the physical world?
Not sure could just be lights out,
though part of me wants to believe
theres a reunion of some fashion.
Whats your advice for LGBT
movement leaders?
Keep moving in the right direction.
We have gained a lot in the last
couple years and we need to keep the
momentum going.

What would you walk
across hot coals for?
To get to Charger and
to save my animals.
What LGBT stereotype
annoys you most?
That gay men are pedophiles.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
Priscilla Queen of the Desert

overrated social custom?
Cell phones

What trophy or prize
do you most covet?
I have received a couple trophies
from my peers for everything that I do
for LGBT Police Week. Anytime your
peers recognize you for work you do
for them, its special.

What do you wish youd known at 18?
That I was gay actually believing
it and not just thinking that it might be
the case.
Why Washington?
A lot of what Charger and I do
revolves around the LGBT community.
From running Bear Happy Hour, running
other bear events, raising funds for D.C.
charities and hosting events for LGBT
police ofcers during National Police
Week (lgbtpoliceweek.org), Washington
is the place we need to be.

About eight years ago, Richard Scott Gunn, a detective with a local
county police department in Maryland he says hes not permitted to name,
recognized a need for an LGBT component to National Police Week, an
event President Kennedy proclaimed in 1962 in which ofcers killed in the
line of duty are memorialized.
LGBT Police Week (lgbtpoliceweek.org) has become a kind of parallel
event in the last several years with its own spate of activities from social
dinners and happy hours to a memorial service slated for Monday at noon
in Dupont Circle where ofcers will honor Master Cpl. Sandy Rogers, a 28-
year veteran police ofcer from South Carolina who was killed in the line of
duty in January 2012. Her partner, also a cop, was barred from memorial
events in their town, Gunn says, so he hopes Mondays event will help give
her partner the support she needs right now.
We kind of started this on our own, he says. Its kind of a homophobic
arena to begin with and we saw the need for LGBT ofcers to come
together with other LGBT ofcers.
Gunn, who was outed on the force by his ex-wife during a nasty breakup
about 15 years ago, guesses less than a fth of LGBT ofcers, in his
experience, are out on the job.
Its also a big week for Gunn aside from Police Week he and his partner
of two years, Nicholas Charger Stone, plan to get married on Monday,
the anniversary of the date they met.
Gunn, a 45-year-old Glen Burnie, Md., native, lives in Hyattsville, Md.,
with Stone and their dogs. He enjoys riding motorcycles and curling up
with Charger and the dogs to watch a movie in his free time.

Lesbian musician Amelia White joins nine-time Grammy winning band, Asleep
at the Wheel, in a performance at the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.) on

Born in Virginia but a Boston-based musician, Whites inuences are a combination
of country and classic rock. Her most recent album Beautiful and Wild explores the
idea of souls crossing to the next world and connections made with beings beyond
the physical. The title track was written about guitarist Duane Jarvis, whom she met
in 2001 and who died an untimely death in 2009.

Well-crafted drama explores
bubbling familial tension
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
In her 1991 tell all The Way I See It,
presidential offspring Patti Davis rather
scandalously opened up about her
famous family.
Included in a litany of unsavory
revelations was how growing up her
mother Nancy Reagan frequently struck
her. The slightest provocation, Patti wrote,
resulted in a slap across the face almost
daily and sometimes with a hairbrush. It
was her tightly wound mothers way of
maintaining control. At the time, Reagan
reps denied all assertions.
With his latest play, Other Desert
Cities (now playing at Arena Stage), gay
playwright Jon Robin Baitz takes us into
that spooky world of Californias Republican
elite where appearances and loyalty trump
all. Meet his characters Lyman and Polly
Wyeth. Part of Ronald Reagans inner
circle, they gave up show biz (he acted and
she wrote screenplays with her sister Silda)
for the political arena. Lyman was made
an ambassador. Years later, removed from
power, they live surrounded by photos
from their heady past and pass sunny days
playing tennis, sneaking cigarettes, towing
the Republican line and polishing the
legacy of their friends and mentors, Ron
and Nancy.
Baitzs play takes place at Christmas
time in 2004 at the Wyeths Palm Springs
home. Theyre joined by their two
surviving children Trip, a TV producer,
and Brook, a blocked novelist living on
the East coast who struggles with severe
depression. Pollys alcoholic sister Silda,
a little shaky and fresh out of rehab,
rounds out the party. What should be a
warm reunion devolves into an unhappy
holiday when Brooke drops a bombshell
shes written a new book. Its a memoir
dealing with her older brother Henrys
involvement with a radical anti-Vietnam
War group and subsequent suicide. It
also explores the idea that her parents
abandoned Henry when he needed
them most. Whether Brooke is interested
in presenting truths or settling scores
emerges as the hot yuletide topic.
Not surprisingly, the elderly
Republican couple despises unwashed
peaceniks, but its those smug lefties
who really get to Polly. When she learns
that prior to its fall release, Brookes
book will be excerpted in an impending
issue of The New Yorker, Polly becomes
doubly enraged. Revealing secrets to
these readers is too much. Brookes
transgression is unforgivable; and her
parents, Polly promises, will never feel
the same toward her again. Lyman
simply asks that Brooke wait until he and
Polly are dead before she publishes.
Absorbing, witty and zinger-lled
(directed at the unfashionably dressed
and neocons alike), Baitzs script is
supported by smart staging and good
design. Director Kyle Donnelly maintains
intimacy in Arenas big Fichlander theater
in-the-round space (but unfortunately
some dialogue is garbled when actors
inevitably must turn their backs to
sections of the audience); and Kate
Edmunds set the expansive living
room of a mid-century, desert showplace
complete with faux stone bar and sunken
circular replace establishes the older
Wyeths way of life at a glance.

Citys gay sports outts have
biggest meets planned for
coming months

The District of Columbia Aquatics
Club hosts the 22nd annual Maryland
Swim for Life on July 13 on the Chester
River. The event features one-, two-,
three-, four- and ve-mile races. Also
this year, the swimmers are partnering
with the D.C. Triathlon Club to offer a
2.4 mile Triathlon Challenge.
Proceeds from Swim for Life support a
number of small local organizations such
as Heart to Hand, Quality of Life Retreats,
Metro TeenAIDS and the Chester River
Association. More information on the
event along with volunteer opportunities
can be found at swimdcac.org.
The D.C. Strokes Rowing Club
hosts its 20th annual Stonewall Regatta
on June 2 on the Anacostia River. This
years event features 33 races in a variety
of disciplines for men and women. Also
on the docket are mixed races and
different levels of adaptive races. The
Strokes are online at dcstrokes.org.
The Chesapeake and Potomac
Softball League will be hosting the
NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series from
Aug. 26-31 at three separate complexes
in the area. The tournament, the largest
annual LGBT sporting event in the world,
will welcome 170 teams participating in
more than 600 softball games.
In total, they are expecting more
than 4,000 athletes and fans visiting
Washington for the weeklong
tournament. More information on

The D.C. Front Runners will host Pride
Run 2013 on June 7 at 7 p.m., an event of
friendly competition, fun for the community
and a celebration of pride. The event is the
inaugural running of a chip-timed 5K run
and walk coinciding with the festivities of
D.C.s Capital Pride week.
The race will begin at the historical
Congressional Cemetery with a
course that follows the Anacostia River
toward RFK Stadium and back. More

The D.C. Sentinels have opened
registration for the second season of
the Washington D.C. Gay Basketball
League. The summer league kicks off on
June 5 and runs for 10 weeks at Trinity
Washington University. Registration is

The inaugural Freedom Sports
Festival will kick off July 18-21 with six
sports being contested all within the
D.C. city limits. Local LGBT sports teams
will come together to host tournaments
in beach volleyball, golf, racquetball,
kickball, ballroom dancing and basketball.
The Festival will open at the Team
D.C. Champions Awards and College
Scholarship reception on July 18.
Registration for the tournaments will open
soon and will be posted at teamdc.org.
The DC Gay Flag Football League
will send teams to compete in Pride
Bowl VI in Chicago from June 27-30.
Last year, 24 teams from across the
United States contested in the event
with one of the D.C. squads just missing
a spot in the championship game. The
ag football league is dcgf.org.
The World Out Games will be
contested from July 31-Aug. 11 in
Antwerp, Belgium in 33 different
sports. A contingent from D.C. will
be attending and a uniform has been
organized for the opening ceremonies.

Collins from the Washington LGBT
sports community. Collins became the
rst American of a major professional
sports league to acknowledge being gay
while being an active player. The news
brought statements of support from the
Washington Wizards, NBA star Kobe

How did you meet? I had been doing drag for approximately two years and had
become a member of The Academy of Washington, Inc. We had become close and
when my previous mother and I had a falling out, she asked me if I would be her
daughter because she saw so much in me that wasnt being nurtured and needed to
be. And the rest, as they say is history.
What does she mean to you? Veronica means the world to me. Many times I get
so many ideas in my head that its great to have someone there to help you sort it all
out to make you the best you can be. She can be tough as leather sometimes but she
always has my best interest at heart.

How did you meet? I met Shelby at a benet drag show at Freddies Beach Bar. I
had been doing drag for a number of years, but at that particular time I was going
through some health challenges and was battling depression. She was just kind of
the perfect prescription. She was incredibly caring, uplifting and made me want to
continue performing. Over the next few weeks we talked pretty much every day. Before
long it was ofcial, I had changed families and Shelby became my mom. I think I can

How did you meet? I met Kristina Kelly at Apex when I rst moved to D.C. She was
the rst queen to give me a chance in this city. I began regularly performing with her at
various D.C. venues: Apex, Omega, Remingtons, Be-Bar. She taught me how to paint
a face and take the stage. As for Lena, she has never been my ofcial drag mother but
Ive learned more from her than any other. From her I learned how to host a show and
command an audience (hosting is 10 times harder than performing). Lena over the years
has given me some of the best advice (not that I always listen Im hard headed) that I
have ever received.

How did you meet? I met Destiny at Freddies Beach Bar in Crystal City, shortly
after I moved to D.C. and came out. Theater was always something that I enjoyed and
drag to me is an extension of that. I had toyed with the idea of trying drag and voiced
it several times to some people. The rst time I was put into drag was by Destinys drag
mother, Ophelia Bottoms. After that it was something that I knew that I loved and the
creativity is endless. Destiny took me in and gave me advice and sources for items and
ideas to advance in the craft. And here I am, Miss Capital Pride 2012 about to step
down and I owe it all to my mother and the family that we call the Childs clan!
What does she mean to you? Destiny/ Ric is more than a drag mother. We have
a friendship that is more than just lashes and lipstick. Destiny is that person who
knows my look from across the room, the one who is honest enough to say Girl, not
that hair, the one who magically has the Mary Poppins bag of stuff if we forget
something or need something. She is a person who in or out of drag consistently
gives back to the community and those around her.

DEAR MICHAEL,
Last week, at my 40th birthday party
no less, a friend told me that Ive passed
my sell by date. I think hes right. Ive
never been much of a success as a gay
man, because Ive never t the image
that seems to dene what a gay man
should be. Im not skinny, Ive been
balding since my 20s, casual sex holds
no appeal to me, I dont like alcohol or
recreational drugs and Im bad at one-
liners, catty conversation, fashion and
fabulousness in general. So Im pretty
much a wallower at bars and parties.
Now, with this aging thing, I feel more
and more excluded from the club to which
I thought I had a guaranteed membership,
but which has never really accepted me.
Id love a boyfriend, companionship and
some decent gay friends (who dont
insult me at my own birthday party). But
given that Im apparently a dull round
peg where a sleek skinny peg is required,
should I just give up?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Your experience of feeling
marginalized in the gay male world is
common, shared by many who dont
t a certain narrow age-body-beauty
demographic. If you, like most gay
men, have grown up in a gay-unfriendly
culture, your present sense of not tting
in can easily re-activate old trauma and
feelings of worthlessness. The result:
when you stand on the sidelines at a
party or get snubbed by some glamour
boy, you feel as bad as you did at 14
when you were picked last for the
baseball team. Other past experiences
of feeling less than, not directly tied
to being gay, can also get activated by
present-day feelings of rejection and
lead to your feeling as rotten about
yourself now as you did way back when.
I urge you to start challenging
your own negative view of yourself.
Remember Eleanor Roosevelts words:
No one can make you feel inferior
without your consent. You have
accepted a notion of what it means to
be an ideal gay man that is based on
appearance and behavior, but there are
countless ways to be a perfectly ne gay
man that have little to do with what is on
the surface. Every time you disparage
yourself, you are reinforcing those old
pathways in your brain that make it easy
to see yourself as a loser. Conversely, if
you would consistently make the effort
to nd (and cultivate) attributes that
you respect about yourself, then seeing
yourself in a positive light would become
easier and more habitual. Another
reason to work on your self-esteem:
when you walk around believing that
you are a failure, other people are likely
to pick up on that energy and see you in
much the same way as you see yourself.
Would you also consider reducing
the time you spend with people who
do not welcome you or who put you
down? Be aware that you may have a
hard time giving this up: Experiences
and ways of thinking that are old and
familiar, even painful ones, can feel
somewhat comfortable, so they are
difcult to abandon for something new
and unknown. But if you will widen
your lens, there are many gay men out
there who are generally friendly and
accepting of others. Challenge yourself
to nd and spend time with people who
share your values and interests. This will
be a powerful antidote to your ongoing
experiences of rejection.
Reading these words may give you
some ideas for new ways to see yourself
and your situation. But one advice column
is unlikely to deeply alter your negative
view of yourself or help you become more
hopeful in a lasting way. Such changes are
absolutely possible. But they take time
and ongoing effort. Therefore, I urge
you to nd a good therapist to help you
challenge yourself to create a life that
consistently afrms your worth as a gay
man and a human being.

If you have a passion for cooking,
you might consider creating a gourmet
kitchen with all the equipment desired
by world-class chefs. But what if youre
a car enthusiast? Then todays high-tech
and well-designed showstopper garages
might be just your speed. Here are some
great ideas our design-build remodeling
team has included in garage transforma-
tion projects for car acionados.
Whether its a makeover of existing
space for the family car or a new de-
tached showroom for a vintage car col-
lection, higher end garages have been
on the rise in recent years. More and
more, car enthusiasts are looking to cre-
ate garages that are fully conditioned
and decked out with storage systems,
entertainment areas, plumbing, ma-
chinery and high-quality nishes.
Mechanical systems: Whether
youre looking to work on your own
cars, create a private workshop or add
additional capacity, you may consider
installing a hydraulic lift. On the upper
end of options are in-ground lifts, which
are ush-mounted with the oor and
rise from underneath with the push of
a button. Also available are a range of
above-ground post lifts that allow con-
venient accessibility for car servicing or,
with enough ceiling height, can double
or even triple garage capacity. If youre
a mechanic at heart, you may add a
professional-grade air compressor for
convenient power for the tools of the
trade. Another luxury option is a garage
(or driveway) turntable that is installed
ush to the surface and helps to maneu-
ver vehicles into tricky spaces.
Flooring: If your garage serves dual
purposes showroom and workshop
you may consider mixed ooring.
For the display area, many choose to
invest in quality ceramic tile for a high-
end, nished look. However, dropped
objects can cause damage to these tiles
so they are not ideal for the work area.
For this portion, many recommend ce-
ment oors with a dark colored epoxy
treatment, for a solution that is less ex-
pensive and virtually impenetrable. An-
other all-over ooring option, which is
cost effective, durable and attractive, is
rubber tile or sheet goods specically
made for the auto industry.
Lighting and windows: As sunlight
will fade vehicle paint and fabrics, spe-
cial care should be taken when decid-
ing where or if to include windows.
Well-planned, high-quality articial
lighting is critical to both functionality
and color accuracy. Cool uorescent
lighting with high output is ideal, es-
pecially when it carries a high Color
Rendition Index (CRI), which helps to
ensure that colors appear true.
Climate Control: A complete heat-
ing, air conditioning and dehumidify-
ing system is important to create an
environment that is comfortable for
both you and your car. Another impor-
tant consideration is controlling hu-
midity, which can help to prevent rust
and mold. Garage owners can choose
either a basic standalone unit or a so-
phisticated system with digital controls
that automatically maintains the de-
sired humidity level.
Plumbing: With many garages now
featuring bathrooms, indoor car wash-
es, ice makers and utility sinks, water is
another must-have in the ultimate ga-
rage. Keep in mind that a garage drain
will likely require separators to lter out
the oil and grease.
Entertainment: As if the lure of the
cars is not enough, many are choosing
to turn their new garages into lounge-
like gathering spaces to be shared by all.
Common additions are wet bars, seating
areas, pool tables, high-end sound sys-
tems and entertainment centers.
Security: Just like with the rest of
your home, you want to make sure your
garage and vehicles are properly pro-
tected with a quality security system.
The bottom line is with professional
design expertise and execution, ga-
rages are no longer greasy spaces over-
stuffed with junk. With a bit of planning,
todays garages are high-tech, comfort-
able and more functional retreats for car
enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike.
