~~THIS WEEKS PROGRAM~~

Our speaker today was John Walker, the first-year Principal of Campolindo HS. Before coming to Campolindo, John was the Assistant Principal of San Ramon Valley HS, and he has taught in the Boston area and at St. Marys in Berkeley. He has a BA in Urban Studies from Penn and an MA from Claremont Graduate University. He and his wife and four children live in Walnut Creek. John presented Campo by the numbers (to make it easier for newsletter editors to get it right). The current enrollment is 1265 students, which is a mid-sized high school in general but still looks pretty big to incoming freshmen. 921 was the score achieved by the school (out of 1000) on the State Academic Performance Index, which makes Campo one of the very best in the state. 75% is the number of students who have passed at least one Advanced Placement (college level) courses, which is a very high figure. The school has 65 full-time faculty members, many with Masters or Doctoral degrees, and including some who also coach the athletic teams. . . .The students are encouraged to participate in the 54 extracurricular clubs (including service club affiliates). These clubs range from the Frisbee Club to the Academic Decathlon Team; the latter competes with teams from other schools over knowledge in ten general subject and News Flash alert: not only won the State championship, but recently won the National Championship!!! Also, their choir (who helped Rotary at our Nite at the Races dinner/auction), recently received a standing ovation for their performance at Carnegie Hall in New York. Campolindo is ranked 18 best in the state, which is also the th 5 best public high school. I bet the local Realtors really love that! . . . . The school has 9 academic departments, which is tough to maintain at this level of students. Principal Walker has summarized all this into 1 mission: to assist his students to achieve . . . .success in global society.

~~THIS WEEKS MEETING~~

The meeting was opened in prayer by Herb Wehmeyer, who also led the Pledge of Allegiance. Guests this week were: Bo Morse, visiting from Concord Rotary, who brought her friend Faith Taylor, a St. Marys staff member for 19 years, as a guest of our Club; Diego Rios, a St. Marys student who has been freshman Class President this year and will do so again next year; and John Walker, the current Principal of Campolindo HS and our speaker today.

~~ANNOUNCEMENTS~~
Gary Irwin: We have a full slate of workers for the Community Faire booth this Saturday, but would be glad to work in any volunteers who show up. Well promote Rotary and give away popcorn. . . . Also, according to Chair Jody Parker, the fabled Moraga Rotary Golf Tournament for this year will be held at Moraga Country Club on Tuesday June 4 after the Rotary meeting that day. Jody has graciously volunteered to host a vast quantity of sumptuous cocktail food to be served at her house in the club. Estimated price (for non-MCC members) is $75; for dinner only, its $10. Signups will be taken next week, although you can get an advance reservation by contacting Gary.

Johns vision is summarized in the 3 Cs: collaboration among faculty members, as well as students and parents; climate on campus that is welcoming, has groups for students to fit into, and has an adult at the school from which each student can solicit advice and counsel from; and communication among all stakeholders in the school. Principal Walker later answered questions regarding grade inflation, evaluation of teachers and remedial approaches, and collaboration with service clubs and other Town organizations.

~~HAPPY BUCKS AND FUN STUFF~~

Gary & Carol Irwin returned last week from half a month in France, where they had a wonderful time in Paris, Normandy, and the Loire Valley. The Normandy WW2 invasion beaches and the nearby cemeteries remind us that Freedom isnt free. Paid $20 to avoid a spin of the wheel. . . . . .Al and Marilyn Simonsen returned from Princeville on Kauai, where Al made up at the Hanalei Rotary Club where he is an ohana [extended family] member and even got his photo in their newsletter. Spun the wheel for $8, which he rounded up to $18. . . . . David Kruegel visited Princeton to see twin grandkids, the college museum, and the British (actually, Hessians) position that Washingtons troops attacked and defeated on Christmas eve 1776, after crossing the icy Delaware river. (If not for this victory, we might be opening our meetings with God Save the Queen). . . . .Tony Schoemehl for visiting a frat brother at the Plaza in Kansas City, on the good side of Missouri. Happy Bucks: Just $1 from Al Simonsen because hes getting fitted for hearing aids. A High Five from President Frank, wearing rose-colored glasses) for surgery fixing his eye lids so they wouldnt droop and block his vision. ( Heck, we always thought he was just asleep.) Kevin Reneau had the lucky red ticket, but missed the big bucks by selecting the clear marble that was soooo close to the winning one.
