REFLO A
Breakthrough Ammonia Refrigeration Compressor Fluid Performance

2008 Petro-Canada

18

Traditional Ammonia Refrigeration Compressor Oils Naphthenic p Oils

Advantages:
long track record of performance good low temperature properties virtually wax-free performance ( WF suffix in many product names) widely available reasonably priced

Disadvantages:
higher oil carryover results in higher oil consumption higher solvency in ammonia refrigerant can decrease system efficiency and performance lower oil viscosity protection against wear at high temperatures prices are increasing and availability is decreasing since several naphthenic oil producers exited the market

Although Naphthenic oils have been used effectively for decades, newer fluid technologies offer superior performance benefits.

2008 Petro-Canada

19

Traditional Ammonia Refrigeration Compressor Oils Synthetic y Polyalphaolefins y p ( (PAOs) )

Advantages:
lower oil consumption lower solvency in ammonia refrigerant good low temperature performance good high g g temperature p p protection

Disadvantages:
much higher price shrinkage of seals may occur in some refrigeration compressor systems

And while synthetic oils offer significant performance benefits, their high cost can be prohibitive.

2008 Petro-Canada

20

Petro-Canada uses an unmatched 3-step approach to create a superior refrigeration compressor fluid.

The p purer the base oil, , the better the final lubricant
performance.

Base oils optimized for ammonia refrigeration systems

perform better. Especially since more than 90% of a refrigeration fi i compressor fl fluid id i is b base oil. il

2008 Petro-Canada

21

Step 1: We select the best feedstock to ensure the p y maximum level of purity

We differentiate ourselves by choosing the highest quality feedstock that maximizes lubricant base oil production

2008 Petro-Canada

22

Step 2: We apply the patented HT purity process

As pioneers of Grp II and Grp III Base Oils, Oils Petro-Canada has taken a leading approach to the manufacturing of our PURITY* base oils While others may use similar base oil refinery processes, we operate our units to the highest degree of severity and choose the right catalyst th b ensuring thereby i th the maximum i l level l of f purity it The patented HT purity process eliminates the impurities present in the oil by blowing them apart. The best molecules are further purified or re-combined through the use of hydrotreating Net Result: A Base Oil that is 99.9% 99 9% pure the worlds highest purity level
2008 Petro-Canada 23

Step 3: We select the right additives to further enhance our base oils long life performance

Our leading edge R&D team have over 25 years formulation experience with PURITY* base oils. They select the right additives to create innovative and advanced products - many of which represent breakthrough technologies in their field. Products that go: BEYOND TODAYS STANDARDS
2008 Petro-Canada 24

The result is REFLO A A market leader that provides reliable, long-term performance with significant operational cost savings. Lower oil volatility can reduce fluid consumption by up to 80% or more more. Lower solubility in ammonia can improve refrigeration system efficiency and performance. performance Superior thermal and oxidation stability can extend fluid life, reducing maintenance i t costs t and d downtime. d ti High viscosity index (VI) ensures strong protection from wear over a wider range of operating temperatures.
2008 Petro-Canada 25

REFLO A Application
Reflo A is specifically formulated for Ammonia refrigeration sump type systems used in commercial operations;

however can be used in R-12 system not operating below -20C but not recommended for R-22 (HCFC) systems

Reflo A is ideal lubricants for both screw and reciprocating g

compressors Compatible with mineral oils i.e. Naphthenic oils Available in ISO VG 46 and 68 NSF H2 and CFIA approval

Beyond Todays Standards

REFLO As lower oil volatility can significantly reduce fluid consumption and maintenance costs.
REFLO is less volatile than naphthenic and solvent refined paraffinic fluids at high temperatures. This results in less oil carryover to the refrigeration systems low temperature side, reducing fluid consumption p by y up p to 80% or more. Lower oil carryover also reduces sludging and deposit formation in evaporators, which lowers compressor maintenance costs costs.

REFLO 68A reduced fluid consumption by 95 per cent, saving us thousands th d of fd dollars ll per year. Our O oil il consumption ti has h never been lower. Gabriel Conligliaro - Maintenance Manager
Cerveceria Quilmes Brewery - Buenos Aires, Argentina
2008 Petro-Canada 27

Beyond Todays Standards

REFLO As lower solubility in ammonia can improve refrigeration system efficiency and performance.
Less ammonia is absorbed into the fluid:
- can reduce foaming in separator tanks and increase system efficiency. - REFLO maintains its viscosity, so it lubricates better, reducing wear.

Less fluid is absorbed into the ammonia:

- reduces the potential for fluid to block piping valves and filters piping, filters. - helps maintain refrigeration purity, improving system efficiency and performance.

REFLO 68A separates from the ammonia gas and does not
circulate through the system. With other fluids, I had to change filters every 3 to 6 months. Im not even going to replace the filters on my equipment now. Its saving my company a lot of money. Johan Muller Technical Manager
Hexkoel Beperk Hex River Valley, South Africa
2008 Petro-Canada 28

Beyond Todays Standards

REFLO As superior thermal and oxidation stability extends fluid life, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
REFLO As A s resistance to oxidative and thermal breakdown guards against oil thickening, deposit and sludge formation. Helps to keep the compressor, compressor heat exchanger and expansion values operating at their design efficiency and performance standards. Can C extend t d fl fluid id lif life, even i in th the presence of impurities in the ammonia refrigerant, saving downtime and change-out costs.

When it comes to oil, cleanliness is next to godliness. You

need a clean oil because the tolerances are so fine, and if you have a dirty oil, you are going to wear your machinery out. For the integrity, safety and long life of my machines I chose REFLO A and it has not let me down. Fred Leonenko Chief Operating Engineer
Confederation Freezers - Brampton, Canada
2008 Petro-Canada 29

Beyond Todays Standards

REFLO As high viscosity index (VI) ensures strong protection from wear over a wide temperature p p range. g

REFLO A has a significantly higher viscosity index than naphthenic compressor fluids. As a result, REFLO A maintains its viscosity and does not thin out as much at high temperature. A higher viscosity at high temperature provides better protection against wear.
