Post-Game Quotes
ATHLETICS MANAGER BOB MELVIN: On what it was like to end the losing streak in that fashion: “It was an exciting game, at times well-played. Jarrod, other than a little bit of a bout with some walks there, only gave up three hits. He gave us what we needed. We got a lead. We held it, so a lot of good things that we do when we win came to fruition today.” On how encouraging it was to see Jarrod pitch well: “Yeah, we want to get him on a roll. One good start is one thing. We’d like to see him get on a roll and certainly with losing a few games in a row, it was a performance we needed out of him today.” On what he saw from Jarrod tonight that he might have been missing in his other starts: “Better rhythm. His timing seemed to be a lot better, not as rushed at times. Good command of his fastball early on, wasn’t afraid to throw it and throw it for strikes, had a good change-up and threw some sliders, even to the left-handers too.” On the catch that Cespedes made: “Unbelievable. And [he] really took a blow. I think he hit his face on the fence too. When you’re not swinging the bat well, you have to find a way to do it, either defensively or whatever. He hustled all night. He ran every ball out. And when you’re struggling, that can be tough to do. He’s keeping his wits about him and certainly contributed with a great play.”
